OS/2 Starter Kit needs help! (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
The OS/2 Starter Kit is supposed to be a CD for an ONE-STEP installation of Drivers, Fixpacks, Java, Main-Apps, usefull Tools ... But it will also include a Disk1 creator for a proper Installation, How-To"s, OS/2-Tricks, OS/2-Link-Collection ... The finished CD is supposed to be hole and partly (e.g. want a Trick-Collection for you Homepage?) free I think this is a big goal, so I could need some help.

Here are the ways how everybody can help:
- send me your favorite Tricks, Progs (Links is enough(should be free software)), OS/2-Links - or come and join, there is a lot to do: creating installers (REXX), testing apps and helping to setup the directory-tree, Bookmarks and Trick-collection.

Aurora Client & Server infos (from Buntspecht.de)
  • Aurora-shipping date 4/28/99 is definite
  • there will be theoretically a new OS/2-Client, but won"t be delivered on a seperate CD or box (unequivocal statement of IBM). It will be possible to get this client with fix-updates and Software-Choice, that will give the WARP-Client all (!) new functions (incl. JFS. NFS, SMP,...).
The second possibility is to install a "new OS/2-Client" via CID (there will be a whitepaper and aRebook from IBM about that) from the Aurora-CD!

some more informations to the e-business Server:
  • bootable installation-CD
  • NFS is included
  • Lotus Domino Go Webserver 4.6.2.7 is included (Apache will be available in August via SW-Choice)
  • server can handle two netbios names
  • VINCA CO-Standby Server (activ/activ-version) will be available in autumn

RealAudio player source code available (from Fernando Cassia)
Almost every user out there has tried or read about the docs to make RealAudio player v3.0 work in a winos2 session (and lately also RealPlayer 5.0).
However the overhead of loading a winos2 session JUST for playing audio could be avoided if we had a native player for .ra files...
Well this dream of a native os/2 player is nearer now... since a group of Amiga programmers released a native player of RealAudio files for their platform.
I hope some OS/2 audio gurus out there can take a look at the source and come up with an OS/2 player (or Netscape helper application).

Team Trier Collection Vol.4 OS/2 CDROM now availab (from Thorsten Thielen)
Finally: The Team Trier Collection Vol.4 CDROM for OS/2 is now available!
For only DM 10 it includes (among lots of other share- & freeware, demos, etc.):
  • Fixpak 10 for Warp 4 in English & German
  • Fixpak 38 for Warp 3 in German
  • Fixpak 40 for Warp 3 in English
  • Xfree86 3.3.3.1, the most recent release of the free X-Window server with all fixes
  • Netscape Communicator 4.04 (February"99 refresh)
  • Java 1.1.7a (with the most recent fixes)
  • Ghostscript 5.50
  • EMX 0.9d, the new release of the well-known C( ) compiler for OS/2
  • OS2TeX (the current release from December/January 98/99)
  • PMBackup for free!
  • Exclusive Early Preview of MusicBase/2!
  • OptimizeOCR for only DM 15,-! (instead of DM 25,-)

Two comfortable menu-systems, a HTML interface that can be used with any web browser and a PM program, developed specially for the TTC, support you at selecting and installing the programs.
The Fixpaks and (new!) XFree86/OS2 may be most easily installed directly from the CD!
(Note: This CDROM may be of interest only to German-speaking or at least European customers: The documentation and the installation-programs on the CD are in German and shipping charges may get really steep outside of Europe ...)

Seems to be a very good week regarding streaming technologies on OS/2 :-)
Apple today released the Quicktime Streaming Server, they call the OpenSource version "Darwin Streaming Server".
The sourcecode is available at http://www.publicsource.apple.com/. You have to register (for free), that"s all.
If you are working on a port, please let me know. I can offer http, ftp and *finally* also CVS access at OS/2 Netlabs.

OS/2 Warp 3 in a real "misssion critical" (from Frank Helk)
Ever needed the proof that OS/2 is suitable for "mission critical" systems ?

The company I work for (NIS Ingenieurgesellschaft, Hanau, Germany) has supplied a computer system that drives the control rods of the german Gundremmingen nuclear power plant. The system has been inspected by experts and authorities and was proven to be suitable for such critical tasks, it is now running for about one year without any flaw.

Guess the used operating system ... it"s OS/2 Warp 3.

Netlabs.org and OS2.org (from Andreas Linde)
The creators of Netlabs and OS2.org decided to cooperate much closer.
Netlabs will concentrate to present everything for the OS/2 developers, so that the projects get the best support they can think of. There will be things like bug-tracking systen, CSV, documentations and much more.
OS2.org will try to establish itself as an OS/2 support page for endusers.
If you have ideas, suggestions or wishes please take part at the online discussion or send Netlabs or OS2.org an email.
The first step is the presentation of the enduser pages for the Win32-OS2 and EverBlue projects. There you also find the links to the developer pages on Netlabs.

SecureDesktop Beta-Test (from Regards J. Dankoweit)
This came in today:
A week ago I made an announcement for a beta test of
SecureDesktop. Only 3 (in words three) people showed interest. That"s not enough for me. I will wait now another week before I send out the beta version. If there are no more interests then the project will die - Sorry.
SecureDesktop is a security system for system-logon, multiple user dependend and individual desktops (like UNIX).This is part of four modules, which are currently under development.
For more information look at my homepage or email me.

The Warp X page has had an update; it seems there are rumors of an OS/2 client code-named "Titan."
There is also a contradictory rumor that says there are currently no plans for a client.

OS/2 gets passing boost in GNOME review (from Andreas Linde)
From an article:
"It doesn"t look like GNOME exploits much of the potential of CORBA just yet, but I personally consider this to be the most exciting promise of GNOME. It means GNOME may one day become as usable and flexible as the OS/2 Workplace Shell. The OS/2 Workplace Shell is CORBA-based and is probably the most powerful GUI desktop available."

It goes on to talk about other OS/2 technology like OpenDoc further into the article.

Atlanta Targeted for Third Annual OS/2 Conference and Exhibition

The Board of Directors of Warpstock, Inc. (http://www.warpstock.org) has set the date for its third annual OS/2TM conference and exhibition, Warpstock "99. The event is set for October 16 and 17, 1999, and will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center (http://www.gicc.com), located one mile south of Atlanta"s Hartsfield Airport. The event was officially announced on an Internet Relay Chat channel hosted by OS/2 Voice (http://www.os2voice.org) and attended by OS/2TM users from around the globe.

With the recent release Work Space on DemandTM 2.0 and anticipated release of an entirely new version of OS/2 Server, Warp Server for e-BusinessTM there is renewed interest in this powerful operating system. Recent cross-platform application upgrades available for OS/2 include StarOfficeTM 5.0; Netscape CommunicatorTM 4.04; and Symantec AntiVirusTM 5.0. According to event organizers paid attendance was greater last year than the previous year, and is expected to nearly double this year.

The previous two events presented workshops and presentations designed to provide the kind of community support that is usually associated with the Linux phenomenon. Warpstock has also provided independent OS/2 software developers a forum to exhibit and sell directly to users. Social events are slated to be held at the Atlanta Sheraton Gateway, which adjoins the convention center. Registration costs and early registration discount information will be released in early April.
