Panorama preview release (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Roderick wanted me to release a new Panorama driver sooner rather than later. However, there are still numerous administrative issues that need to be resolved before I can release an official version. Therefore I have made available a "preview" version which you can download and try out.

Since a Panorama section of the BetaZone does not exist yet, I have temporarily uploaded the preview Panorama driver to the ACPI section since that is the only place where I have write permission. This is not the correct place for the Panorama driver and it will be moved when a Panorama section is created.

You can download this preview version from your Software Subscription Services at the Mensys website. Log in to Mensys with your Mensys login id and click the Downloads link. Click the "Software Subscription Services for eComStation" Download link and find the ACPI section. The Panorama driver should be listed there until it is moved to its correct location.

You cannot report problems with this preview version. This is a preview version. Also, the ticketing system for Panorama is not setup yet and it will take me some time to do so. You must wait for a new announcement regarding a new Panorama version and/or an announcement regarding the ability to report problems. I will not respond to problem reports via e-mail.

New Uniaud release (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

I have just placed a new version of Uniaud on

http://class='extlink'http://svn.netlabs.org/uniaud

Uniaud32 is version 2.02.01 and is updated to ALSA version 1.0.24.

The port of ALSA 1.0.24 was done by Paul Smedley so he gets all the credit. I just cleaned up some build issues, built it and released it.

This version of Uniaud32 has only had very minimal testing so use with caution and backup first.

Uniaud16 is version 1.09.06 and is updated to include support for ACPI style suspend/resume.

Warpstock Europe 2013 - Haarlem Train Station (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Information about WSE2013: http://class='extlink'http://ecomstation.ru/wse
Official site: http://class='extlink'http://warpstock.eu

The conferences play important role in the life and functioning of the community. The developers and managers are working for the conference during 6 months, they are using the energy received at the conference during the next 6 months.
Full list of previous eComStation / OS/2 conferences: http://class='extlink'http://ecomstation.ru/conferences.php

Imagine that eComStation captured new markets and is growing.
Why this happened? Because New solutions were developed, new libraries.
Some interesting user interface features were introduced.
New applications based on universal templates were created.

So, you know what we should make to achieve the success.
What topic are you going to research in the next 6 monthes?
What presentation are you going prepare?
(If you know a specialist which can work on this, send him information about the conference)
* What changes make to User interface * What templates of applications should be developed?
* How to join different applications to pipelines to solve more complex tasks?
* How to give the 2-nd life to REXX
* Usage of eComStation in school/university
* (your topic)

===== Haarlem (tourist) =====

Some words about Haarlem (the city which you can visit during/after the conference):

The original train station in Haarlem Holland was called Haarlem Station. Originally constructed in 1839 to carry passengers between Haarlem and Amsterdam, the station was rebuilt in 1905-1908. Today, 6 trains per hour run from Haarlem to Amsterdam. Travel time is approximately 20 minutes.

===== Reforms =====

(suggestions how to improve the conference; collected from visitors)

* WSE-REFORM-201211-05: It’s always difficult make good photos of the speakers.
Let’s give 30 seconds for photographers to make some photos (after/before) with selected slides in the backround.
[this is important for good reports]

* WSE-REFORM-201211-06: Social event (restaurant or tourist walk) should be available for all guests of the conference by default.
People can’t imagine what do they miss, it’s necessary invite more people, so they get more impressions from the conference.
Of course, the visitor can decline the invitation.
[this is important for communication among people]

Why OS/2 failed... (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Published at "The Register", posted by Dominic Connor.

Part one:

"The unholy alliance of IBM and Microsoft unleashed OS/2 25 years ago with a mission to replace Windows, Unix and DOS. Back then, I was a foot-soldier in that war: a contract bug hunter at Big Blue. Here’s how I remember it."

http://class='extlink'http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/23/why_os2_failed_part_one/

Part two:

"My last piece on OS/2 was in part a mea culpa, a history of my part in its downfall. However, I can’t claim all the credit. In fact, if I’m honest, there were hundreds of reasons why OS/2 failed, and most of them had nothing to do with me. So, here are some of the real corkers."

Are you going upgrade to new version of eCS? (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Main question: how do you collect data from old system?

If you are going replace old eCS with new one then share your experience

with other users:

* which directories may contain apps?

c:\programs, c:\tools, c:\util

* (for developers) What cfg files of your application are important

for migration? (should be copied to new system)

* What system settings to save? (local network params, ..)

* What settings of User Interface to save?

=== Suggestion for developers: ===

Create script migrate.cmd in the directory of your application, parameter: target_dir -

target directory to save user data and cfg

Example: e:\migrate-20120725\688 - we are collecting all data to migrate-20120725,

to the sub-directory N 688 (ID of your application)

Create cfg\ for settings, userdata\ for user data.

The user installs new system, extracts the contents of e:\migrate,

All applications during installation can check if

this directory exists and contains user data and settings.

P.S. eComStation offers migration mechanism but

major part of users prefer install to new hard drive and re-install

applications.

Some speakers prepare own presentation in 30 minutes, other need 3-5 monthes. Are you ready make a presentation?

Do you want to share some knowledge with other users? (Speakers page)

What presentation to make?

* You can demonstrate 7 useful applications.

* Connectivity with communicators and tablets

* Usage of WPS and REXX (not theory)

* Databases for eComStation, how to create personal DB

* Or ..

Warpstock Europe 2013 -- exhibitors (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

A) In the past, many famous companies were participating in Warpstock Europe
(Epson, Norman, Sun, IBM, Lexmark, ..)

What companies to invite this time? * Software developer: ..
* Peripherals: ..
* Laptops: ..
* Books: ..

Share your minds, what company to contact? What are the arguments to join the event?

Does your (small/medium, not international corporation) company want participate? What the participation means? Show large banner with company logo + guard? no..
Stand + table + 10 chairs + mini presentation (10 minutes) x repeat 5 times per day.

B) Good video (slow, with notes) about Haarlem in may:
Amsterdam and Haarlem: Two Great Dutch Cities
http://class='extlink'http://www.youtube.com/watch />(Haarlem at minute 9:00)

PHOTO: http://class='extlink'http://ecomstation.ru/pic/news/201211/Haarlem_063_600x392.jpg

/>C) Reforms: * WSE-REFORM-201211-03: How to hold the visitors? Many visitors go away after the launch in the second part of day (because are tired, because don’t know about coming presentations).
Large, most popular, official presentation should start at ~ 16:00, not in the morning.

* WSE-REFORM-201211-04: 1) There should be a room where the users can talk with
the developers of software. The list of developers should be published in advance.
There should be 3-5 chairs around every table.

Warpstock Europe 2013 - new people (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

How to invite new people? Look at your contacts list,
are you familiar with IT journalists? OS/2 fans and businessmen which
may be interested in the conference?

Notify this people about the conference (May, 2013, Netherlands).
Recommend Haarlem city as good place for recreation:
* Old Haarlem (video) -- http://class='extlink'http://www.youtube.com/watch />* Haarlem - Zandvoort, Netherlands [HD720p] (via Haarlem to the beach) -- http://class='extlink'http://www.youtube.com/watch

Advice: />* it’s not effective to rotate slideshows on the screen of notebook in the hall. people ignore standard promo clips (related to applications)
* No reason to distribute flyers - major part of people don’t read flyers
* During presentation make questions to the audience so people wake up, stay cheerful and listen to you. It’s so difficult listen the presentations in the second part of day.

p.s. it’s unofficial message. Search for official messages at http://class='extlink'warpstock.eu>
