AOL 4.0 für OS/2 auf Hobbes (von: Helmut Bongartz, 13:14:35) ^
Hallo,

. . (19:59:24)
. . . so eine Art XmasFred.EXE für OS/2ler :((

Was meinst'n damit?

AOL 4.0 was sagt der Autor dazu ?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No, It is not a joke. It will dial, but, I did not include the dial DLL. I
wanted to do it first TCPIP and contacted AOL about it.

I told them what I was doing because I saw a need for an OS/2 version and
sent them what I had. The same thing that is on Hobbes. A week or so later I
got a letter in the mail from AOL lawyers saying that I will stop using any
and all graphics and any development, and will not do anything to connect to
AOL.

It pissed me off. So I posted what I had to Hobbes to see if anyone would get
behind me to develop an OS/2 version. I still use OS/2 at home more than I
use Windoze 98. I use AOL for Win3.1 under OS/2 and would really like to use
a native version.

I feared that if I included the dial DLL that AOL might legally have a case
against me. So, No dial DLL.

I am working on using parts of Moziilla as the Internet browser, even though
AOL uses Internet explorer. I feel that since it really doesn't do anything
at this point that AOL really can't do anything other than say stop. The
program does not defame AOL in anyway. I think that is what they are afraid
of also.

I haven't figured out the TCP/IP connection yet. It would help if I had a
sniffer that I could put on my network to see what goes out and comes back
in. But, I don't have a spare 10 grand for the sniffer. I do connect but I
get a reject immediately. I am also fearful that AOL will end up tracing me.
The dial portion dials and will connect to AOL modems But I don't send any
packets so the AOL modem will drop in about 5 minutes or less.

I am hoping that enough people will download it and say that they would like
me to continue. I don't ask for any money from AOL nor anyone. Maybe I should
talk to IBM and see I could get some backing support from them.

So, that is my story.

How bad would you like to see a version for OS/2. As for the 64 bit, AOL told
me that they didn't want another 16 bit program to keep up with. They didn't
understand that OS/2 was the first 32 bit operating system. So, I said it was
64 bit instead of 32 bit. They didn't know. But, I do hear that the next
version of OS/2 is going to be 64 bit. I am using VisualAge C++ to compile
which is only 32 bit, So, it is in fact only 32 bit until there is a 64 bit
compiler.

I will keep you posted if you would like me too.
