Bridge and Router Software

IBM offers five Token-Ring bridge software options. Remote Token-Ring Bridge/DOS is a version of the former Token-Ring Network Bridge Program
Version 2.2, which it replaced in 1993.

The local-only version of the software--Local Token-Ring Bridge/DOS--offers no new functionality over Token-Ring Bridge Program Version 2.2, but LANStreamer Token-Ring Bridge/DOS adds significant performance enhancement using the LANStreamer
MC32 Token-Ring adapter cards.

The LANStreamer Token-Ring Bridge/DOS program allows bridged packets to travel over a greater number of bridged network segments--"hops," in bridging parlance. Previously, seven hops were the limit--with the LANStreamer adapter installed, the hop count goes up to 13. Frame-relay Token-Ring Bridge/DOS links multiple Token-Ring LANs via frame-relay bridges over a single physical frame-relay connection.

LAN Bridge Manager/2 allows management of LAN bridges from a central location.

RouteXpander/2 is a software-based, entry-level router that runs on an OS/2 server or workstation and can act as a feeder node to a 6611 Network
Processor or other popular router hardware.

Point-to-point links between two systems running RouteXpander/2 are also supported. Announced at the same time as RouteXpander/2, the IBM Wide Area Connector (WAC) adapter provides high-speed, wide area network connectivity at speeds up to 2.048M bps and is available in four different two-port models featuring different connector types--RS-232-D, V.35, X.21, or RS-422/-449.

The WAC adapter now runs with NetWare for SAA to provide remote host connectivity for LAN clients. The Wide Area Connector is used in the OS/2 server or workstation running RouteXpander/2.

Among the RouteXpander/2's pluses are its capability to run as an economical frame-relay attachment device on a PC-based platform and
its support for Data Link Switching, IBM's scheme for delivering SNA traffic over multiprotocol router networks.
