JdeBP's 32-bit Command Interpreter |
A Pure 32-bit command interpreter that is a replacement for the 16-bit CMD that is supplied with IBM OS/2, allowing
one to finally replace one of the 16-bit vestiges that remains in OS/2 Warp; along with a suite of ancillary utilities
(ANSI, ATDOWN, BEEP, BRIGHTBG, CLS, CMDLOAD, COLOUR, COPY, COPYPLUS, COPYSTD, DATE, DEL,
DELAY, DESCRIBE, DETACH, DIR, ECHODOT, ECHOS, FREE, HELPMSG, KEYLOCKS, LABEL, LINES, MKDIR,
MORE, MORESTD, MOVE, PAUSE, PRINTENV, REM, RENAME, RMDIR, START, TIME, TRUENAME, TYPE, VOL,
WPSARC, and ZDIR). The command interpreter comes with a choice of three front ends (TTY, TUI, and GUI), and
supports various enhancements not in IBM's 16-bit CMD, such as implicit environment variables, easily nested
command scripts, subroutines (GOSUB/RETURN), and directory stacks. The command interpreter and utilities
support long filenames, deep directory trees, ISO/IEC 9445-1:1990 (POSIX 1003.1) timezones, operation until the year
2106, and automatic unattended changes to and from daylight savings time in multiple different timezones
simultaneously. They take advantage of the architecture of 32-bit OS/2 for things like efficient directory searches and
the ability to deal with more than 64KiB of data. Installation instructions are in README.TXT. Requires the runtime
libraries of JdeBP's 32-bit Unicode Console API. |

JFCL |
To cancel or annul something. "Why don't you jfcl that out?" The fastest do-nothing instruction on older models of
the PDP-10 happened to be JFCL, which stands for "Jump if Flag set and then CLear the flag"; this does something useful,
but is a very fast no-operation if no flag is specified. Geoff Goodfellow, one of the Steele-1983 co-authors, had JFCL on the
license plate of his -->BMW for years. |

JFS(lazywrite parameters) |
On the IFS= line in CONFIG.SYS:
---- IFS=jfs.ifs /L:OFF ---- or
---- IFS=jfs.ifs --- with /L:synctime,maxage,bufferidle
(JFS ignores any characters between the L (or l) and the colon, so valid
flags are /L: /LAZY: /LW: /lazywrite: etc.)
OFF forces asynchonous writes to be immediately initiated.
synctime is the interval at which the sync thread runs. Default = 64
maxage is the longest time that a frequently modified file is kept in
cache
default = synctime*4
bufferidle is the time indicating a "recent" change. Changes newer than
this value are not written unless the last write was older than
maxage. default = MIN(1,synctime/8)

jiffy |
(1.)The duration of one tick of the system clock on your computer . Often one AC cycle time (1/60 second in the U.S. and
Canada, 1/50 most other places), but more recently 1/100 sec has become common. "The swapper runs every 6 jiffies" means that
the virtual memory management routine is executed once for every 6 ticks of the clock, or about ten times a second.(2.)Confusingly,
the term is sometimes also used for a 1-millisecond wall time interval. Even more confusingly, physicists semi-jokingly use `jiffy' to
mean the time required for light to travel one foot in a vacuum, which turns out to be close to one nanosecond. 3. Indeterminate time
from a few seconds to forever. "I'll do it in a jiffy" means certainly not now and possibly never. This is a bit contrary to the more
widespread use of the word. |

Journaling(JFS) |
The Jounaling File System(JFS) provides improved structural consistency and recoverability and much faster restart times than
non-journaled file systems such as HPFS, ext2, and traditional UNIX file systems. These other file
systems are subject to corruption in the event of system failure since a logical write file operation often
takes multiple media I/Os to accomplish and may not be totally reflected on the media at any given
time. These file systems rely on restart-time utilities (that is, fsck), which examine all of the file
system's meta-data (such as directories and disk addressing structures) to detect and repair structural
integrity problems. This is a time-consuming and error-prone process, which, in the worst case, can lose
or misplace data.
In contrast, JFS uses techniques originally developed for databases to log information about operations
performed on the file system meta-data as atomic transactions. In the event of a system failure, a file
system is restored to a consistent state by replaying the log and applying log records for the appropriate
transactions. The recovery time associated with this log-based approach is much faster since the replay
utility need only examine the log records produced by recent file system activity rather than examine all
file system meta-data.
Several other aspects of log-based recovery are of interest. First, JFS only logs operations on meta-data,
so replaying the log only restores the consistency of structural relationships and resource allocation
states within the file system. It does not log file data or recover this data to consistent state.
Consequently, some file data may be lost or stale after recovery, and customers with a critical need for
data consistency should use synchronous I/O.
Logging is not particularly effective in the face of media errors. Specifically, an I/O error during the
write to disk of the log or meta-data means that a time-consuming and potentially intrusive full integrity
check is required after a system crash to restore the file system to a consistent state. This implies that
bad block relocation is a key feature of any storage manager or device residing below JFS.
JFS logging semantics are such that, when a file system operation involving meta-data changes -- that is,
unlink() -- returns a successful return code, the effects of the operation have been committed to the file
system and will be seen even if the system crashes. For example, once a file has been successfully
removed, it remains removed and will not reappear if the system crashes and is restarted.
The logging style introduces a synchronous write to the log disk into each inode or vfs operation that
modifies meta-data. (For the database mavens, this is a redo-only, physical after-image, write-ahead
logging protocol using a no-steal buffer policy.) In terms of performance, this compares well with many
non-journaling file systems that reply upon (multiple) careful synchronous meta-data writes for
consistency. However, it is a performance disadvantage when compared to other journaling file systems,
such as Veritas VxFS and Transarc Episode, which use different logging styles and lazily write log data
to disk. In the server environment, where multiple concurrent operations are performed, this
performance cost is reduced by group commit, which combines multiple synchronous write operations
into a single write operation. JFS logging style has been improved over time and now provides
asynchronous logging, which increases performance of the file system. |

JSP |
Jackson Structured Programming: A method for program development, which starts from the data streams to create a
program.
As a help to describe the data structures and the program you create diagrams A diagram consists of a number of nodes, which are
connected to form a tree. There are three basic types of nodes: Sequence, Iteration and Selection.
With these three one can describe all sequential flows (under the assumption that there is one starting point and one ending point).
Apart from these three basic types there is also operations, which represents an "atomic" instruction, i.e. it can't have children.
The JSP-methodology prescribes a strict schema that should be followed in the program creation. |

Jungius, Joachim |
Jungius, Joachim
geb. 22 Oct 1587 in Lübeck, gest. 23 Sept 1657 in Hamburg,
