I am working on a project to get some smaller ISV's and shareware author's applications demonstrated in Atlanta. This project is for for ISVs and authors who will not be able to attend the show in person.

I need more people who are willing to donate a few hours of their time to demonstrate the applications during the show. I am aiming for 4 or 5 people per booth so no one has to miss the presentations they want to see. Up to 4 ISVs will be represented at each booth.

The demonstrators will each receive a fully licensed copy of the applications they demonstrate.

So, if you are going to Atlanta (if not, why not?), and want to trade a few hours of time for some very nifty applications, please contact me.

For me, personally, this is a sad day. Our company tried to hang in as long as possible with OS/2. OS/2 is still my favorite platform and OS/2 customers are the best customers our company ever had. I have made many good friends through my associations with all of you. You\'ll still see me popping in at OS/2 users group meetings throughout the country when my travels coincide with a meeting.

Our company continues to do very well. The consulting side of the business has always been strong. The most exciting area of business, however, is Iceptur. Iceptur is our new Internet filtering software for the Windows 95/98/NT platform. Despite the fact that there are over two hundred competitors in this market niche, we are experiencing phenomenal success. This is partly because of the unique technology we developed and partly because there is a strong demand for high quality Internet filtering solutions (release 2.0 will hit the streets by September 5th). We have entered into a number of strategic alliances with several companies to market Iceptur and license the underlying technology for use in other products.

I need, now, to focus all of InnoVal\'s resources on Iceptur and our consulting business. I tried, during the past year, to juggle resources but in doing so was not doing the right kind of job for our customers, the OS/2 community at-large, InnoVal\'s employees, or InnoVal\'s owners. You made the Post Road Mailer into the number one email client for OS/2. You worked with us on J Street Mailer as we tried to negotiate a platform independent course with Java. You have my thanks and the thanks of everyone at InnoVal.

We are moving on to bigger things, but not better. OS/2 was better and (oh, how I wish) it could have been big.

XML is the new, future language of the web, and Warp Expo West presents you with two XML lectures to put you ahead of the competition and save you hours of study time.

Bill Schindler is a renowned computer language and
compiler code optimization expert. In these two lectures he will show you what XML can do, discuss the web applications that XML will allow you to create, and demonstrate how you can write XML quickly to make your web pages come alive in ways that HTML simply is not capable.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) is dynamic. It allows you to create your own "tags" so you aren't restricted to the ones defined in some specification. These new tags are included in your web documents, and the new browsers (he'll present the OS/2 XML browsers and tools in the lectures) use these tags to put your web pages on the screen. Sets of predefined XML tags called DTDs are already being created for your use, including SVG (vector graphics), business-oriented data exchange, new word processor formats, XSLT (data transformations), RDF (web-based metadata), even technical arenas such as mathematics and molecule descriptions.

Schindler is well-versed in language development and optimization, and in these two XML lectures will show and teach you exactly what you need to start writing XML. "And I'll show real examples," he says, "such as how XML can give OS/2's drag-and-drop a major increase in intelligence."

In session one, "Why XML Is Important", you'll be given the new goals that your web pages can now attain by using XML. You'll see how XML can give you better web pages faster, you'll be given ways to organize your information for better displays, and you'll get ideas to convince management that you and XML can deliver a web presence that beats the competition.

In session two, "An Introduction To XML", you'll learn the technical aspects of coding web pages using XML, what decisions you'll have to make for fast XML designs, the tricks you'll need for organizing the pages, and how to parse and validate your XML documents so there won't be surprises later.

Bill Schindler is a well-recognized OS/2 contributor. He's the Editor In Chief of _Extended Attributes_ (the award-winning OS/2 magazine from POSSI, the Phoenix OS/2 Society), author of Teach Yourself REXX In 21 Days, programmer of the Smack! OS/2 labeling program, and has a wide background in compilers and code optimization. Bill is currently incorporating XML into Smack! as its standard file format.

"Pre Execution Services", "Remote Client Connection" Now On Lecture Schedule
IBM is sending Rapid Deployment Team presence to Warp Expo West.

Dennis Sposato of IBM's Network Computing Software Division will speak on Pre Execution Services. Sposato is on that division's Rapid Deployment Team, developer of these new services.

Pre Execution Services allow for Dynamic MAC Addressing (which bypasses the hardware MAC address), Remotely Controlled Boot Manager, Pre-Execution Logon, Remote Client Connection (boot from LAN without a NIC BOOT-ROM chip) for WorkSpace On-Demand, and Personalized Local Data Drive.

This new IBM seminar is in addition to IBM's previously announced lectures by Steven King, Senior Manager for IBM's Network Computing Software Division. King will present Services Offerings For The OS/2 Platforms in one session and Warp Server For e-Business And WorkSpace On-Demand in the other.

The fact that I even have to write to you disturbs me, since I take it for granted that the overwhelming majority of IBM's customers are honest, making every effort to purchase software legally.

That said, some of IBM's commercial software is being distributed illegally on the Internet. Recent examples include HPFS386 (which can be legally used only if you have a license for LAN Server Advanced, Warp Server Advanced or SMP Version 4, or the Warp Server for e-business HPFS386 Option Pak), OS/2 Warp Version 4, Stardock's Object Desktop for OS/2 Warp, and other software titles.

This illegal distribution MUST BE STOPPED, and you can help.

Please report any instances of software piracy by visiting the Internet web site. Your report will be treated confidentially. You can report cases of Internet-based piracy ("online") or other forms of piracy ("offline").

Piracy hurts both consumers and software developers. IBM and other software publishers depend on regular revenues to fund exciting new technologies, including new Java(TM) software. Denied revenues, software publishers cannot fund these needed innovations, nor can they provide adequate support to law-abiding customers. In short, software piracy is theft, plain and simple.

First, we've been blocking out the presentations and seminars, and they fall into the following categories.

IBM: Steven King, IBM's Development Manager for Network Computing, will fly here from Austin, Texas to speak. He'll show IBM's new Warp Server for e-Business, TCP/IP enhancements, Domino and Java server improvements, WorkSpace On-Demand server-managed clients plus the Windows32 feature for WorkSpace On-Demand, and Warp Server features like the Journaling File System, the Logical Volume Manager, WebSphere, NT Server management, and more. And in a separate session Steven will show products from IBM's Network Computing Software Division covering XML, Java, SecureWay, Year2000 and a wide variety of other important subjects.

PROGRAMMING: A number of programming topics will be presented at Warp Expo West, including international consultant Steven Levine's "How To Write a Workplace Shell Class". Steven will show you how to subclass existing desktop objects and leverage the Workplace Shell's functionality into your own programs. Then he'll show the details of building your own Workplace Shell objects and conclude with the appropriate development and debugging techniques.

NETWORKING: The Networking SIG leader for SCOUG, Steve Schiffman, will present one of several networking lectures. His "Designing Your Home Network" will show you how to connect your machines together, how to install the drivers, what software you can take advantage of, what your home network can do that stand-alone machines can't, and how to get all of the networked machines onto the internet through just one internet connection.

MULTIMEDIA AND GRAPHICS: Jerry Rash will have his entire home entertainment center on stage -- video capture and playback, audio, editing, CD audio transfers to hard drive and back again, format conversions -- and it all runs on an OS/2 computer. Jerry will show you what utilities to use (including the free ones), what drivers to use, and he'll show you how to set up the OS/2-based multimedia system you've been dreaming about! And Don Baker, the expert on inkjet printing, will show you how to get images that look like photographs (we've seen him do it!) from your inkjet printer.

WEB SITES: Netscape Composer is full of tricks to make your web pages look great, and there are a handful of other web tools that will test and check your web site and catch the dozens of little "gotchas" that take weeks to track down manually. Virginia Hetrick returns again this year with two more presentations to keep your web site at the A+ level.

ADVOCACY: We'll have plenty for the OS/2 users who want a vision of the future. Lynn Maxson will speak again on his Warpicity project for creating software with his specialized Developer's Assistant programming tools, and he'll include more details on his methods and the project's current status.

MATHEMATICS AND ENGINEERING: Ben Archer and Michael "Rocky" Rakijas use OS/2 while they do their research, and they've selected Octave as the OS/2 program they want to talk about and show you how to use. Signal analysis, curve fitting and homework assignments are just the start of what can be done with Octave, and Ben and Rocky will show you how they've solved many, many problems with this tool.

AND MORE: We've got many, many other presentations planned for Warp Expo West. In fact, there are about two dozen lecture periods, so you'll have *plenty* to keep you busy.
