netlabs.org has a new web server! (from http://www.os2news.com)
Dear community,

Today we physically replaced the old netlabs.org web server by the new, much more powerful one! While there was much work done already, not everything is finished yet. Please give me some time now to finish the migration, I will try my very best to make sure all the information are back online as soon as possible and hopefully even more soon.

Again, I would like to say a big 'thank you!' to everyone that contributed to the new server!

Changes:

- new site layout! You just get an impression right now, much more to come :-) I *know* it is broken for now so don't report that ;) It is just *very* basic right now.
- most links have a different structure now. While the sub domains like warpin.netlabs.org still work I have to add some redirects for links & downloads etc.
- new XML/XSLT based CMS (thanks a lot to Arne Blankerts for his fCMS!, see www.fcms.de for more information, it rocks!). It's blazing fast :)
- the FTP server is case sensitive now
- all FTP users are gone, I will migrate them as soon as possible. Anonymous user works for sure
- Subversion & TRAC is running on the new server now, it is much faster :-)
- CVS moved away already some days ago, now at cvs.netlabs.org. Snapshots of the old projects are available at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/snapshots
- IRC points to irc.aroa.ch for now, will change (see below)

To be moved within the next few days:
- wiki.netlabs.org
- www.edm2.com

You will notice when this is done because the pages will react much faster ;)

Server:

After years of running the web server on OS/2 I decided to move to FreeBSD as a server OS for various reasons which I would like to explain because some people do not seem to understand that:

- My daytime job is administrating servers, most servers I run are FreeBSD so I know this OS pretty well
- netlabs.org provides mainly software for the desktop. I prefer to invest time in organizing netlabs.org itself than debugging issues on the server just because most of the software I run on the server are made for Unix (TRAC, Subversion, Apache...) and might not work on OS/2 that easy
- I do much more on this server than just providing basic services like a little bit of PHP & MySQL. We use quite a bunch of software on this server, see http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/R2-d2 if you are interested in the details
- FreeBSD works just fine on this dualcore AMD CPU and because the server is in Hamburg (Germany) and I live in Biel (Switzerland) I didn't feel like experimenting on new hardware
- we simply have much more important things to discuss than the OS of netlabs.org. Talk about Voyager for example! :-)

Unfortunately the admin of the eCS Network refuses to accept any servers in the IRC network which are not running OS/2 so I am not allowed to connect to that network anymore. While I find that very narrow-minded I have to accept that and move the IRC network. In the next days I will most probably join another existing network and #netlabs will move to that network as well. I will announce that for sure. For now irc.netlabs.org points to irc.aroa.ch. I would have preferred to stay on eCS Network because that's where we belong...

So far, I'm sure I forgot some things but I will inform again in a few days or so.

Thanks again to Arne for his friendly support with fCMS, the new hardware (thanks for the reinstall ;) and finally changing the server itself :-) I will also bug him the next weeks till the web pages look the way I want it. Also thanks to n@work which still provides a very fast Internet connection!
With the new server you should be able to notice it :-)

cu

Adrian

GBM 1.51, GBM plugin 1.24 for Lucide RC1 (from Heiko Nitzsche)
GBM plugin 1.24 for Lucide RC1 or higher
----------------------------------------
(freely usable, see license included)

This is a plugin for the Lucide document viewer available for eComStation
that extends Lucide for the support of reading all bitmap formats
supported by GBM.DLL. It requires GBM.DLL 1.35 or higher. GBM 1.51 is
recommended. Do not use GBM 1.41 any longer.

Supported features:
* document info
* loading all formats supported by GBM
* save loaded bitmap if it has only one page
* multipage bitmap viewing support
* load bitmap page on demand
* scaling and rotation

Get package gbmos2plugins_lu124_moz130_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

The above plugin does not work anymore with Lucide Beta 4 because
the plugin API has changed. If you just upgrade your Lucide installation
to RC1, please delete the old lugbm.dll or/and lugbm_b4.dll and install
the new plugin. Users who want to stick with Lucide Beta 4 for the moment
can download a compatible plugin version from http://heikon.home.tlink.de
for a limited time.

For more details please have a look at the change log in the included
documentation or at my GBM homepage (see below).

GBM.DLL 1.51 and GBM command line tools
---------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

The Generalised Bitmap Module (GBM) is a library capable of loading and
saving bitmap files in a variety of popular and less popular bitmap file
formats. Programs may be written to use this code, and thus be able to
access a variety of file formats without actually knowing what format
the pictures are in, or any details about file format itself.

In this version, extended BMP, JPG, PNG, TIF, PBM, PGM, PPM, PNM and XPM
support is additionally included. PNG and TIF support also 16, 32, 48, 64 bpp
colour depths with/without alpha channel. PPM supports also 48 bpp
colour depth. BMP supports also OS/2 RLE24 and Windows 16/32 bpp RGB
and BITFIELDS formats.

It comes with a useful set of command line bitmap manipulation tools.

Get package gbmos2_151_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

Notes for eComStation 1.2/1.2R users:
-------------------------------------
Please read the installation instructions. eCS 1.2/1.2R ships
with an old GBM.DLL (1.12) which prevents loading of the new
GBM.DLL (1.51). Please follow the instructions to use the new
GBM.DLL for all programs as well as for eCS WPS features like
bitmap previews.
If you cannot replace the eCS shipped GBM.DLL, please execute
unlock x:\\os2\\dll\\gbm.dll from a command line. Then override
the old GBM.DLL with the new one. Don\'t forget to reboot afterwards.

The homepage of GBM for OS/2 and eComStation
--------------------------------------------
http://heikon.home.tlink.de

It provides:
- comprehensive documentation (also included in the download archives)
- developer tutorials on how to use GBM libs in your own programs
- download of all sources and binaries

Download from Hobbes
--------------------
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gbmos2plugins_lu124_moz130_bin
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gbmos2_151_bin

WarpIN installation package
(GBM.DLL, GBM command line tools, GBMV2, GBMRX, GBMDLGRX, GBM plugins, Doc):
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gbmos2pm131_gbm151_lu124_moz130_bin_wpi

Full source code:
http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?key=gbmos2pm131_gbm151_lu124_moz130_src

If the links don\'t show anything, the packages might not yet have reached
its final location in the Hobbes archive. In this case please lookup
the incoming folder.

All downloads are also available on the GBM homepage (see above).

Have fun,
Heiko Nitzsche
