Larsen Commander 1.5.1 (from Leif-Erik Larsen)
Today (May 30 2001) Leif-Erik Larsen has released version 1.5.1 of his popular GUI file manager and command processor, Larsen Commander.
Larsen Commander has a look and feel like the classic Norton Commander, but in a GUI environment. It combines the best of two very different worlds; - the command line and the file management panels. Both are available at the same time, and even in parallel while one or more commands are running in the background!
Larsen Commander is extremely useful espessially for advanced users such as programmers and system administrators that knows the power and the value of having the command line possibilities and the file operation panels available at the same time and in the same shell window. In fact, you can use Larsen Commander almost exactly the same way as you are using the standard system shell, but with a large number of additional and powerful features, such as the console monitor being scrollable and not limited to those "stupid" 25 lines or so of the default OS/2 shell.
But Larsen Commander is not only for the advanced users. Even the novice will find this piece of software very nice at hand. It makes the standard file operations a play, such as copying, moving and renaming files and directories. And of course the command line can be 100% disabled and hidden, for those who never uses it anyway.
Larsen Commander is available at http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/index.html
For a screenshot of a typical Larsen Commander in action, take a look at http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/lcmd_screen.html
Please also be aware of the open Larsen Commander discussion forum at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lcmd
This new release has a lot of fixes and improvements. For a complete list, take a look at http://home.online.no/~leifel/lcmd/history.html

InetPowerServer v0.9.3 (from Terje Flaar°nning)
On May 26th 2001, The author Terje Flaar°nning released v0.9.3 (Beta) of his full featured Inet server package InetPowerServer (IPS). This new version of IPS has a number of great performance enhancement over the previous versions and will deliver e-mails, web pages or file transfer to your clients even faster than before. The web server component now has a plug-in interface for writing CGI style applications for those very busy sites where normal CGI is just not fast enough. For a full list of changes, check Appendix A in the IPS documentation available from the IPS site.
InetPowerServer will help you provide efficient and stable Inet services for e-mail, file transfers and web. IPS provides a common security setup for multiple services, an advanced virtual file system and flexible multi hosting or even multiple site personalities. Many of the recent extensions to the supported protocols (FTP, HTTP, POP3 and SMTP) are also implemented in IPS making it one of the most feature complete Inet serving packages around for any platform.
The IPS Beta Team has been opened for anyone to join as long as they have a Yahoo ID! (for access to additional features) and have time to test and report back on most closed releases done within the IPS Beta Team. Join the IPS Beta Team from the http://groups.yahoo.com/group/IPS-beta page.
Work has begun developing an IMAP component for inclusion into the IPS product to further enhance the e-mail features available to your clients. There is no fixed date for completion of this new component yet, but it will first reach the users of the IPS Beta Team before a public version with IMAP support will be made available.
The official IPS site can be found at http://www.InetPowerServer.com/ from where you can download the latest available version at any time. IPS is high quality software offered to you for free!

Best regards,
Terje Flaar°nning û author of InetPowerServer

Magnum 1.2 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Magnum is a freeware numerology calculator which can be used to derive Chaldean, Hebraic, Pythagorean and Common numbers from alphanumerical text. Magnum is currently only available for the OS/2 operating system.
New:
  • Input history. ESC inserts, Up/Down keys traverse.
  • Improvement: All leading and trailing characters that are not alphanumeric (carrying numerological value) are ignored by the algorithm. Previously leading and trailing spaces could affect compound number calculation.Fix/Change: The tarot section does not use alternative compound numbers (as used in Chaldean numerology). This means that in some cases lower cards will be picked than in the original version.
  • Change: Break values (e.g., 23 for the Tarot section) are now only applied to the last step of calculation.

Astrolog 0.99 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Magnus Olsson known for WarpCalc, has released Astrolog 0.99
Astrolog is a classic when it comes to astrology software, not only is it 100 percent open source software, but it is also the most complete, and most flexible astrology calculation program ever made freely available.
New:
  1. Dynamic scrolling (tracking slider) in both graphics and text displays.
  2. MLE control replaced by custom solution with keyboard scrolling. This solution may be somewhat faster and will also make it possible to display text in different colors. Please let me know if you are interested, since that will provide the motivation I need.
  3. Changes allowing for planetary orbs (used in classical astrology). Defaults are changed for planets and aspect settings, but unless you delete your .INI file, you will keep your present settings.
  4. DrawWheel: Fixed alignment of lines and arcs. XChartWheel and XChartWheelRelation: Aspect lines are dotted according to dynamic orb (instead of fixed aspect orbs).
  5. ChartAspectRelation: Upgraded 16-bit legacy limit to INT_MAX, so that also the most important inter aspects are included...

Datashield / Enhanced E updates (from Pillarsoft)
Data Shield and the Enhanced E Editor have been updated to v1.4 and v2.4 respectively.
Data Shield is a secure deletion program that removes sensitive information from a hard drive. Normally, deleting a file only marks the file as deleted on your drive but the data remains and may still be recovered. Data Shield will obliterate it so that data may not be recovered by overwriting it x number of times or according to Department of Defense specification.
It has options to do a standard or secure delete on:
  • Individual files
  • File listings
  • Contents of a directory
  • A directory tree
  • Complete drives
  • Freespace on a given drive
  • TMP, TEMP or DELETE directories
  • Netscape browser cache
  • Netscape history and drop down history list
Data Shield will automatically find standard installations of Netscape 2.02, 4.04, 4.61 or 6.0 and offer to clean any part of it according to the versions need.
In this version we have included the routines to securely overwrite and clean entries for the new IBM Browser as well as a few changes in file deletion routines to increase effectiveness.
If you have sensitive data on a drive (financial records or client lists for example) never give away or sell the drive without cleaning it thoroughly.
The Enhanced E has a few new features and fixes also. New items in v2.4:
  • Added ascii character viewer and insert tool.
  • Strip trailing spaces also when "Strip # chars"
  • Fixed "Strip # chars" when "Left" is greater than LineLength
  • Changed hot-keys for ClipText.
Data Shield is not for sale separately but is available as part of the PillarSoft Suite. The Enhanced E is $25 and is available through BMT Micro, Mensys and others. Take a peek at our website for more information on the Enhanced E and Data Shield. The PillarSoft Suite has been updated to contain both of these programs plus 11 more OS/2 and eCS specific programs for only $129.
Note: The $99 PillarSoft Suite special remains in effect for a few more days. You can take advantage of this great price on a full suite of OS/2 and eCS software until June 4th.

  • improved to support the 'RootlessWM' mode.
    • The close button on the title bar will work correctly.
    • The name of window will be displayed on the title bar.
    • The tile bar will not be attached to pop-up menu and pop-up window.
    • The input focus will be handled.
  • modified the root window to be invisible in the 'Rootless' and 'RootlessWM' mode.

Mozilla for OS/2 'Nightly builds' resumed (from Mike Kaply)
OK, I am going to start uploading nightlies since things seem to have stabilized a little bit. These builds will basically have little or no testing, so they are TOTALLY at your own risk. They might not even run, so you should NEVER delete your old build until you have made sure the new one works.
This build will always reflect the "latest" build. I won't be archiving old builds publicly right now, but in exchange for that I will be uploading more builds. You can check the date of that build to determine how recent it is.

PMStripper 1.24 (from Don Hawkinson)
This PM utility strips HTML codes from Web pages, leaving only the text and optionally the URLs. While the layout of tables and lists is lost during stripping, data is sorted to separate lines for legibility. It now translates iso8859-1 character codes (windows codepage) to codepage 437 or codepage 850 character codes. Shareware: $9.95 (US) Registered users of PMStripper will have access to two additional executable files that were compiled with the 486 and 586 compiler options. These versions will offer some performance improvement for users with 468, Pentium, or equivalent CPUs. Registration covers all 1.xx releases of PMStripper. If you have registered PMStripper and have not received an email notice of this update, I need to update your email address in my mailing list. Send me a message with the email address used with your original registration and your new email address and I will update my mailing list.
If you operate an internet accessable archive of OS/2 software and would like me to upload the shareware version of PMStripper to your site, please email me at dwhawk@southwind.net and include OS/2 in the subject line.
New in PMStripper 1.24
  • Added 'Translate iso8859-1 character codes' option under 'Strip Options'. Fixed bug in how html comments are stripped.

RexxMail updated (from Marcus de Geus)
Build 20010512.142241 of RexxMail is now available. The updated RexxMail information files are available from: http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rxmlinfo.zip
For information on RexxMail, including on-line browsing of the information and readme.txt files, see: http://www.degeus.com/rexx/rexxmail_english.html
RexxMail is an e-mail client program that uses the facilities offered by the OS/2 Workplace Shell (WPS) to the full. RexxMail itself is a Classic REXX program that runs invisibly (i.e. minimized) in OS/2 VIO sessions. It works by using a number of program objects that call the program (RexxMail.CMD) with various switches. Associations between these program objects and mail message files enable RexxMail to perform its tasks using the WPS, which is still the best GUI around, bar none.

Enhanced E Editor v2.3 (from Wayne Swanson)
The big news in this release is web publishing. Editing and saving a file from your website is almost as easy as working on a local file. Only the file dialog is different and it takes an extra second to save or retrieve depending on your connection. We have also updated the code templates on our website for use with the editor. In tagging languages like HTML you can now highlight text and doubleclick a tag in the template tool to tag it. Making a quick fix or even writing new web pages has never been easier and now you can save them directly to your website. New features in v2.3 are:
  • Open from or publish to web via FTP.
  • Addressed issues resolving differences when using eStyler Button enhancement on eCS - Thanks to Alessandro Cantatore
  • Changed Search dialog resources.
  • Change information line variable usage.
  • Change when loading file from command line.
  • Added "change font" in Code templates.
  • Added sound event for Spell check.
Take a peek at our website for more information on the Enhanced E's. The PillarSoft Suite has also been updated and can be downloaded from our website. The Enhanced E is $25 and is available through BMT Micro, Mensys and others. The PillarSoft Suite contains this program plus 12 more OS/2 specific programs for only $99.
