POSE source code (from Erico Mendonca)
Apparently Palm Computing took over the CoPilot source code and made it an official development tool, called POSE (Palm OS Emulator). Currently there are Winblows, MacOS and UNIX versions, all with source code.

Anyone interested in porting it?

Latest news on this project is that the leader of the team we have been talking to has been invited to visit the Opera Software Head Office in Oslo. We hope negotiations will go well, and that the contract can be signed within a matter of weeks. Hold thumbs!

SETI@Home Project OS/2 Client Software Port (from Dirk Terrell)
This is just a short note to let everyone know that I am working with a team of programmers and the SETI@Home development team to port the SETI@Home client to OS/2. We have made substantial progress this weekend and we should have something ready for public use soon.

SETI@Home is a distributed computing project similar to the encryption cracking efforts run by distributed.net. The SETI@Home concept is to distribute radio telescope data gathered by the SETI project (SETI = Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) to thousands of computers over the Internet so that the data can be analyzed for signals that might be of intelligent origin. The client software runs in the background when your computer is idle.

Client requests result (from Buntspecht.de)
The eMails have been sorted. 36,484 eMails have been arrived altogether. Actual graphic drivers are at position 1 of the wishlist, after that there are soundcards, DVD and printers. All the data was sent to a IBMer at IBM Germany, and then will be sent directly to the states.

A short survey for OS/2 users (from Esther Schindler)
OS/2 Warp 4 included speech recognition -- but how many of us are using it? How well have we taken advantage of it? How important is the technology to the OS/2 community?

To find out, I"ve designed a short survey about the topic; it should take about 5 minutes to fill out. I"ll report the results in the next issue of extended attributes, the magazine of the Phoenix OS/2 Society.

Can you help out?

Soyring Deposition (from Xavier Caballe)
John Soyring"s deposition at the MS-DOJ antitrust trial was released a few days ago. Here are some of the interesting items.
Q is Steven Holley, a MS Attorney

A is John Soyring

Q. What subject matters were discussed at the meeting in Somers with DOJ lawyers two or three years ago?

A. The subject matters were threats that I had become aware of that various vendors have claimed that -- claimed to my staff that Microsoft threatened them with a variety of actions should they enter into a relationship or promote the IBM OS/2 Warp operating system with their product.

Q. Can you tell me the identities of the vendors who reported such threats to your staff?

A. Yes, I can.

Q. Would you do that, please?

A. Dell Computer, Hewlett-Packard, IPC, based in Singapore, Osborne Computer, Sydney, Australia, CompuAdd, Austin, Texas, Vobis in Germany, Escom in Germany.

Holley then gets Soyring to go into the circumstances of each company in detail. Later on:

Q. When you referred in your answer just now, Mr. Soyring, to OEM relationships, what do you have in mind there?

A. The primary reasons, in my mind, why OS/2 has not achieved the broad market acceptance that we had hoped was because we were unsuccessful in getting OS/2, making it broadly available through the OEM channel. We had limited successes and some narrow niches, but never achieved the broad success we had been hoping for in planning, or assuming we could based on our investments.

Hobbes News (from Andreas Linde)
The following announcement has been made at hobbes.nmsu.edu:
It" target="_new">http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/">hobbes.nmsu.edu:
It looks like probably what"ll end up happening is I"ll release the database engine, CGI programs, etc. under the GPL and let whoever wants to run a successor to Hobbes do so. Hopefully the OS/2 community at large can figure something out. :) In the meantime, all the concerned archive users who have been asking: I have a job now. :) Thanks to everyone who gave me pointers.

I"ll hope to have more information on the source code, etc. later, as well as working out some way for others to coordinate efforts to continue Hobbes.

Let me say that it"s been a great pleasure being archiver@hobbes.nmsu.eduarchiver@hobbes.nmsu.edu">archiver@hobbes.nmsu.edu> for these last two and a half years.
