Album Grabber 0.75 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Album Grabber is basically a bot that grabs album covers off of www.allmusic.com. In order for it to work, it expects your music collection to be in a certain format. Your root music directory should contain artist directories, and underneath each artist dir should be album directories. Album Grabber will attempt to locate the correct album cover and present it to you in a window along with 'yes' and 'no' options. 'yes' means to save the album jpg inside the album directory, 'no' means do nothing and proceed. The program is multi threaded, so you can let it run for awhile and then come back and make your decisions. It was compiled using Sun's 1.3 JVM. The source and JBuilder project files are all included so its easy to recompile it yourself.
License: Album Grabber is release under the GNU GPL freeware license.
Note: On my system (Java 1.3.1) the Album Grabber crashes when starting it on a second attempt. Deleting the settings.ini helps as workaround, but if some more OS/2 users send feedback to the developer this will be hopefully solved in future releases.

eCS Boot-CD (from Roderick Klein)
Hard work is being done on the next release of eComStation, eCS 1.1. One of the things where big changes are being put in place is the bootprocess. The new system that has been developed creates a RAM drive before eComStation starts. Then 2 diskette images are unpacked to the RAM drive. You will get a preboot menu (multipage) in which you will be able to select the required drivers for your system to boot.
You can also load a driver from a diskette that is copied to the RAM drive with which you will be able to boot eCS. This will mean that if your system supports booting from CD you should in most cases have no need to create bootdiskettes anymore. This new boot system requires testing by a big group of users.
When booted from CD you will get a pmshell (blue background) with a command line. You need to have at least 32 MB of ram in your computer for this CD to work.
You can use the CD on any system since it will not write data to harddisk.
Please note only registered eComStation users will be able to download this track (its about 10 MB in size).
To get it, please login at www.ecomstation.com and login with your userid and password as usual.
Two other options that require testing are MiniLVM and a new PMFormat. Its strongly advised that you are careful with these tools since they can erase or corrupt the data on your harddrive. So booting from CD is harmless, however be careful with these tools. The tools can be found in \ecs\install on the boot CD.
Please do NOT send bug reports to us via email. We have put a web frontend where you can report any problems you have encountered. To access this, please login to www.ecomstation.com and select the BugTracker menu option. When filing a report to the BugTracker, please take note of the guidelines in the accompanying project documentation. You may want to print that information for reference.
Thank you all for your cooperation

Remark: Please don't test it using VPC. I guess SSI is intersted in the *real* thing ;-)

Ogg Vorbis 1.0 (Correction) (from Michal Pohorelsky)
Brian Havard has released a new build of Ogg Vorbis ! Ogg Vorbis version 1.0 (encoder, player, tools, PM123 plug-in) is a general purpose audio and music encoding format, contemporary to MPEG-4's AAC and TwinVQ, the next generation beyond MPEG audio layer 3. Unlike the MPEG sponsored formats, the Vorbis CODEC specification belongs to the public domain !
>From Timo Maier: "Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format similar to MP3 but free of patented algorithms and fully open source. This is now release quality code with good sound quality and speed. On my Athlon 1200, decode speed is 45 times real time and encoding time using oggenc is around 6.5 times real time time. This means that playback uses around 2.2% CPU and a 5 minute song takes less than a minute to compress."
Requires: EMX 09d FIX 3, sound card driver supporting DART

The correct download location is here and - of course - you can find it at hobbes. I apologize for the inconvinience.

Unfortunately, the java and add-on installation feature was partially broken in UpdCD 2.1. Because it is a serious limitation I have fixed the problem and rereleased UpdCD 2.1 as UpdCD 2.2. There are no other changes at this time.

JPEG io-procedure 0.1.0 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Chris Wohlgemuth has released the JPEG io-procedure 0.1.0
This procedure is a drop in replacement for the JPEG procedure coming with MMOS/2. It supports base JPEG image files (as the IO procedure provided with MMOS/2) and also progressive ones. IO procedures are used to load and write different image files. For example the WPS uses IO procedures to load images for folder backgrounds or for display in the image viewer.
The actual loading of the image file is done using gbm.dll a free image manipulation library. See credits for more information about it. The JPEG support is based on work of the Independent JPEG Group. See credits for more information.

JunkSpy 2.01 (from support@junkspy.com)
Version 2.01 of Junk Spy is now available, and the upgrade is free. We strongly recommend all customers using Junk Spy 2.0 download and install this free upgrade. It fixes several problems (including ones with the automatic update process). It also has new detectors and clues to increase the overall effectiveness of Junk Spy.
Since this upgrade includes changes to the program itself (not just the detection database), it is not being sent to you as an automatic update. You must visit the Junk Spy website to download it.
Simply close Junk Spy and install this new version over your existing
copy. All of your settings will be preserved and you should not need to make any changes within your email program. Be sure to restart Junk Spy after the installation is complete.

The Programmer's Editor (from SLK Parsers)

The Programmers Editor was specifically designed for editing source code. This means that it does the common tasks of line-oriented editing quickly and easily. It does not mean that the editor understands programming language syntax. That is left to the programmer.

Some of the features of the editor follow:
  • It is a console application, not a GUI.
  • Designed for Personal Computers.
  • Uses the function and alt-keys effectively.
  • Simultaneous editing of many files.
  • Copy and paste between files.
  • No limit on file size.
  • Very fast search and replace.
  • Not customizable, but the commands are intuitive.
  • Tab and Enter keys are for movement in replace mode. In insert mode, tabs are space-filled so any tabsize can be used portably. Option to use the tab character if needed, as required in UNIX makefiles.
  • Has some limited binary file editing capability.
  • The editor is very small, about 100K bytes.
  • Available for Win32, linux, and OS/2.
  • There is no charge for the Programmers Editor.

Run_Java (from Cary Renquist)
This is a tiny tool to ease the use of Java programs. It automatically creates Program objects for jar-files.

Original message:
[quick version... unzip this archive into a directory e.g. unzip
run_java__20020707.zip -d run_java Run install_os2.cmd -- this will create
a "Create Java Object" program object on your desktop. Just drop a .jar

also create a "Run Jars" object -- this will allow you to start most

Sequential Utilities (from Don Hawkinson)
These three programs can be used to automate the backup of critical files at boot time or before starting a task that would destroy or modify critical files. They are not intended to replace a system backup to tape or other removable media.
SEQREN gets the rename parameters from a file and applies them to file names received from a pipe, redirection, or to a single file specified on the command line. The utility will check the destination file name for a conflict with an existing file and increment the sequence number until there is not a conflict. Since the utility renames the source file, the source and destination must be on the same drive, but they may be in different directories.
The resulting actions are logged in the file RESULTS.LOG in a format that makes it easy to restore the original file.
Along with the sequential rename utility, there is also a combination rename and move utility. It is like the OS/2 REN utility in that it does not work between drives. But unlike REN , the source and destination files may be in different directories.
SEQCPY gets the rename parameters from a file and applies them to file
names received from a pipe, redirection, or to a single file specified on the command line. The utility will check the destination file name for a conflict with an existing file and increment the sequence number until there is not a conflict. The souce and destination may be on different drives.

The resulting actions are logged in the file RESULTS.LOG in a format that makes it easy to restore the original file.

MPGain 1.05 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Marcel Mueller has released MPGain 1.05 (preliminary)
MPGain is a powerful utility to modify the real loudness of MP3 files automatically to one common level. It utilizes the psychoacoustic modell of replaygain to do the loudness analysis. The modifications to the MP3 files are lossless (i.e. without any additional losses) and reversible. See the original homepages for further details.
The modification of the MP3 files is done in place and lossless.
The utility can operate on MPEG 1, MPEG 2 and MPEG 2.5 file Layer 3 only.

MPEG audio utility 0.23 (from Klaus Staedtler)
MPEG audio utility 0.23 has been released by Marcel Mueller
This Utility analyzes all frames of MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-2.5 audio files compressed with Layer I, II or III.
In case of Layer III files additionaly the gain (volume) may be modified. This is lossless. It is implemented by modifying all side info blocks of the file. This restricts the step size to 1.5 dB.
Furthermore Layer III files may be stripped. This means that leading and trailing silence (empty frames) is removed.

New Version 0.23
  • keep ID3 V2.x tags when stripping files
  • data loss when /spositive integer without /l fixed

WarpIN and XWorkplace updated (from Ulrich Möller)
After a long wait, WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.19.

1. WarpIN V0.9.19 has been released.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again.
V0.9.19 is a 100% bugfix release for the highly broken 0.9.18 version. Hopefully the Unicode support works now.

2. XWorkplace V0.9.19 is out also.

XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project. For details, please refer to the download address below.
It's been a long while since V0.9.18, so this version has a lot of changes. There are only few new features though, since most of the time went into fixing earlier bugs. However, as usual, be reminded that this is not guaranteed to be stable (as the version number indicates anyway).
Note: To install XWorkplace, you also need WarpIN V0.9.14 or higher, since XWorkplace now comes as a self-installing executable. I recommend using at least WarpIN V0.9.16 to avoid the problem with your existing XCenter disappearing on install.

To get the new WarpIN and XWorkplace, please go to: XWorkplace.org

WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and the above address for details.

We have created four mailing lists at groups.yahoo.com:
  • warpin-user
  • warpin-dev
  • xworkplace-user
  • xworkplace-dev
for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively. HOWEVER, please note that I am currently not able to answer a hundred messages per day. If you want to report a bug, this is appreciated, but do not be disappointed if you do not get an answer. And please do not try either to mail me privately instead, that won't change things either. Thanks for your patience.
