Dialog Enhancer Beta (from Paul Smedley)
New beta builds of Dialog Enhancer for both Warp4/Aurora and eCS are now
available from the Dialog Enhancer website at
http://www.dialogenhancer.com/beta_dl.html

The following is from the DE website describing DE.
It's almost too good to believe.... Dialog Enhancer '99 provides the answer to the
problem of the inconsistent look of the dialogs on your OS/2 Warp, Aurora or
eComStation system. The system is overhauled during a sophisticated graphical
installation, and is active immediately after reboot. Your desktop finally will look
complete, dialogs will no longer be a mismatch of different fonts, icons have been
tweaked and much, much more.

The system uses techniques used by no other enhancer utility to create the new look
and feel. Unlike any other WPS enhancer available, there is no underlying application
hogging CPU time, no slowing of your system due to a mass of registered
replacement classes, no random system crashes due to dodgy system hooks, no
wasted memory (Dialog Enhancer actually reduces the memory required by the
operating system.), and no danger of system corruption due to an advanced
installer/uninstaller application which makes many system checks before applying the
changes to over 60 files.

Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes Unofficial Patch (from Martin Kiewitz)
Hi !
Another unofficial patch :)
This time for Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes.
I patched 2 bugs. First one is our beloved Soundblaster-bug, so SB-sound works now.
The other one was a nasty bug, that crashed the VDM. It was the programmers fault. They had no idea of IRQ-processing handlers.
Now the game is 100% playable under OS/2 Warp / eCS. Have fun.

cu Kiewitz

P.S.: Page updates to OS2world are currently not possible. http://www.os2world.com/games will be updated soon

F Version 4.60 (from Christian Hennecke)
On October 14th, Duy Nguyen and Michel Normand have released version 4.60 of F, the "Swiss army knive" of file managers. F is a freeware text-mode multi-platform application. Supported operating systems are OS/2, AIX, BSD, Linux, and Win32.

F is not only a very configurable file manager, but also offers an FTP/FXP client, an editor with syntax-highlighting, numerous tools for developers, simple e-mail and news clients, as well as small HTTP and FTP servers. F comes with its own FFP (F to F protocol) for file transfers and remote file execution, providing services for remote administration. Note that the interface is keyboard-only.

This new stable release version contains all new features that were introduced in the previous betas, like VFS support for several new formats without the need for external helpers, plus several bug fixes.

GoSierra is a "magical" patcher software, that will get your old Sierra/Dynamix games back to work using Soundblaster sound. Under v2, there is new support for Dynamix games as "Betrayal at Krondor", "The Incredible Machine" and many more. Nearly EVERY Sierra/Dynamix Realmode game should be patchable. Patched games work perfectly under OS/2 Warp / eComStation VDM-MDOS-Box.

RexxMail (Update) (from Marcus de Geus)
Build 20011026.160310 of RexxMail is now available. This build fixes a bug in the build I released yesterday (if the JunkMail* settings are missing from the configuraton file, 'register' commands will fail). If you have installed the previous build, please download the new build and upgrade RexxMail to remove the bug. My apologies for the inconvenience. The new build also adds an icon for the 'Help' program object, which I failed to include in the previous build. (BTW, if anyone feels inclined to give the RexxMail icons a -- much-needed -- facelift, please let me know. I would dearly love to be able to offer better-looking icons, but I simply haven't the time to rework them myself.)
Build 20011027.124412 of RexxMail is now available. This build fixes a serious bug in the build I released yesterday (itself a bugfix release -- I know, this just isn't my week).

Lucas Arts Games Generic- and Psygnosis Lemmings 2 Unofficial Patch (from Martin Kiewitz)
  • As I patched Indianer Jones 3 this morning, I discovered that the problem was a real-buggy runtime library. Now I got it working on several Lucas Arts titles (Monkey Island 1 and Indiana Jones 3, both VGA or Non-VGA). These games work perfectly now, under OS/2 as well. Please help me find more games, that needs to get patched and help os2world increase the DOS-working games list at OS2 World.com.
I would like to have someone help me debug DOS4GW programs, because I want to fix Lucas Arts's Sam&Max, but I dont have a clue, how to debug it.

  • Just did another patch. This time for Lemmings 2 (Psygnosis). It emulates a routine needed by the copy-protection. Funny thing: If it isnt supported, the copy protection tries it again, and again, and again ;-) Now Lemmings 2 works PERFECTLY under OS/2 or eCS. Including Sound.

Timidity 2.10.4 (from Klaus Staedtler)
Darwin O'Connor has released Timidity 2.10.4. It is a a text-mode version of TiMidity 2.10.4. This isn't a MCD version. It supports more types of module files, playing files from inside zip and other archives, playing files directly off the web, a "ncurses" text mode interface and a much cleaner port.

TiMidity plays MIDI and Module (.MOD) files. It does it in software without depending on any hardware MIDI support your soundcard might have. Sound quaility can be much higher because it limited by your CPU's power and memory rather then your soundcard's power and memory.

DualMode library and MGLServer release 5 (from Marty Amadeo)
The DualMode library and MGLServer are an application interface for developers to write graphical applications which can switch between full screen and windowed operation, with advanced features such as keyboard, mouse, and joystick support, frame rate timing and frameskip regulation, and palette handling. What's new with release 5:
  • Frame rate regulation API calls added. Can use Timer0 or DosSleep to regulate the frame rate of your application. Capable of regulating frame skip and frame rate throttling for fast systems. All frame rate options can be changed on-the-fly, including which method is used for timing.
  • Color palette manipulation made easier through two new API calls. Don't need to #include "mglserver_internal.h" anymore to manipulate the color palette.
  • Added shutdown routines to the DualMode API as a convenience, so that the developer no longer has to know which thread to wait on for safe shutdown.
  • Added direct framebuffer DIVE blitters for all color depth combinations. When DIVE is detected to not support a source/destination blit combination (as reported by DiveQueryCaps), one of these direct framebuffer blitters will automatically be chosen instead. Currently, these blitters are SLOW, and will not clip themselves if there is a window placed on top of them. Future enhancements will hopefully address these issues. These were implemented to stop some systems from crashing in DIVE.DLL when an unsupported blitter setup is attempted to be used.
  • Added a check to see if WM_SETWINSIZE message attempted to put the titlebar off of the screen. Moves the window so that the titlebar is always available on the screen.
  • Bug fixed with MGLSC_reinit causing the wrong video buffer to be displayed full screen when mode is changed to the same video mode but a new backbuffer is created.
  • Bug fixed causing video mode corruption when WM_TOGGLEFS is requested while a full screen video mode is being changed.
  • Fixed a bug which could lead to popping up the window list instead of returning the window focus to the session that launched a DualMode app when the DualMode app is closed.
  • Fixed a bug causing an occasional crash on exit after MGLServer has been shut down if there is a WM_BLITFRAME waiting in the window message queue.

DFSee 4.04 (from Jan van Wijk)
DFSee is an FDISK-like display, analysis and recovery tool with powerfull FIX commands and UNDELETE for HPFS and NTFS. It is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). This allows usage from simple boot-diskettes for recovery. The package includes an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS version. DFSee can be downloaded from my web-site, but after evaluation, and for all real use you are required to get a registration. It can be purchased from the Mensys online shop for about US $18.
Version 4.04 updates and fixes:
  • Fixed trap and added msg for HPFS 'CHECK' bad codepage sectors
  • Added some important sectors to DFSUNFD logfile
  • Added 'last accessed sector' to some critical error messages
  • Reduced DFSMDOS.EXE memory usage by 60Kb (compared to 4.03)
Registering DFSee will give you the right to use all 4.xx versions
and get support plus a reasonable amount of assistance by email. But even more important, it enables further development of DFSee! The next major change for DFSee will be multiple UNDO/REDO ...

F 4.5h beta (from Christian Hennecke)
On September 29th, Duy Nguyen and Michel Normand have released version 4.5h beta of F, the Swiss army knive of file managers.
This is mainly a bugfix release. New features include virtual file system (VFS) support without the need for external helpers for disk images (DSK) and ISO CD images. Currently, you can't change the files, but files can be extracted and viewed using F's internal viewer.
