Java for OS/2 and eComStation Project Started (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Silvan Scherrer has started a new project to port the latest Java to OS/2 and eComStation. Java is a very popular sophisticated programming environment. Applications written in the Java language are run inside a virtual machine (Java Virtual Machine, JVM) which provides a nearly identical behavior on all platforms that have a JVM implementation available. This "write once, run anywhere" approach means that developers can support a multitude of platforms while only having to maintain one code base. For users, availability of a current Java for OS/2 and eComStation means access to a huge number of existing applications.

For more information about Java, see:

http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_%28programming_language%29

Previously, Java had been made available for OS/2 and eComStation by IBM, Golden Code and Innotek. However, new versions with many changes and improvements have been released since then and current applications require a current JVM implementation. The new project will port such a current JVM to OS/2 and eComStation. Dmitry Kumenov, who is well-known for his work on the Qt 3 and 4 ports, has been hired as chief developer. Funding is provided by several companies and individuals, with Mensys BV being the main sponsor.

For information about the project and its status, please see:

Firefox-3.6.4 and Thunderbird-3.1(rc1) uploaded to ftp.netlabs.org/pub/mozilla (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)
, respectively.
I hope for the firefox build that is the one that will get officially released in a few days.

FF-3.6.4 has gotten a major overhaul (out of process plugins - unfortunately not for OS/2, we’re working on it in
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=536262) />Firefox-3.6.4 misses still support for the java plugin, which doesn’t
matter for thunderbird (that was build on the same code base), because
thunderbird by design never supported the java plugin.

Please read the respective Readme’s uploaded as well for extra patches
I had to apply. Both applications were built using Paul’s GCC-4.4.2.

Have fun, Walter

(Hopefully, there won’t be too much problems with these new versions
as I’ll be offine for a few days).
