Larsen Commander v1.1.1 (from Leif-Erik Larsen)
Larsen Commander is upgraded to version 1.1.1. The recent version (1.1, - which was uploaded on March 23, 2000) had quite a few annying bugs that are fixed in this new version. A upgrade to version 1.1.1 is recommended.

Larsen Commander is a powerful GUI File Manager and Command Processor that has a look and feel like the classic Norton Commander. The most notable difference is that the Larsen Commander is pure GUI. Still it has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor.

Larsen Commander combines the very best of two very different worlds: the command line and the file management panels. Both available at the same time, and even in parallel while commands are running in the background!

XFree86OS/2 under the PM (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
This isn't really news, as the program is a few month old, but it seems like noone realized it: xpmfb is a DIVE X-Server, what means it can display X-Windows under
OS/2. When you start it a window with the Xfree86OS/2 opens in a pre-definded resolution size. All X-Programs run in this window. This is not exactly was Everblue wants to do, as they want to integrate the programs, but it's a good think while you're waiting for Everblue. The Program can coexist with other X-Server configurations as its
run through a separate Batch file. I've tested the program with the most popular Xfree86OS/2 Apps, such as X-Chat, GIMP and Enlightenment. All ran except for Enlightenment, but you can still have Enlightenment under a normal X-Server with the
right configuration.

gphoto 0.4.3 port (from Bart van Leeuwen)
I've done a port of gphoto, the GNU digital camera image transfer program. The linux version supports over 150 camera models, of 19 different makes. The only problem is that I only have one digital camera, a Sony DSC-F1, this camera works perfectly well with the application. The goal however is ofcource to have much more camera's supported. There for if you own a camera and its listed on the site, please contact me so you could help me out with testing the application. This application requires XFree86/2!

WarpIN V0.9.2, XWorkplace V0.9.2 (from Ulrich Moeller)
WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.2. Both updates are mostly for bugfixing.

1. WarpIN V0.9.2 has been released. This is an update to the V0.9.1 developer's release announced a few weeks ago.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again. This new version can now do package dependencies and execute external programs for system configuration after install (aka user exits).

2. XWorkplace V0.9.2 is out also. XWorkplace is the successor to the popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project by now too. This version is still a developer's release (ie might not work on your system and has known bugs), but many bugs have been fixed which were reported for V0.9.1.

There is now a trash can, more CONFIG.SYS settings, most of the features of WarpEnhancer, mouse-button-3 scrolling, improved WPS notebook settings pages, a much better "WPS Class List", full sound schemes support in the "Sound" object, and much more. Also, lots of XFolder bugs have been fixed also.

XWorkplace is work in progress. More things are planned. Christian Langanke will add an enhanced version of his Animated Mouse Pointers for OS/2 soon, for example.

XWorkplace is the first application to use WarpIN as its installer. So to install XWorkplace, you will need WarpIN too.

WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and my homepage for details.

There area four mailing lists at www.egroups.com:
  1. warpin-user
  2. warpin-dev
  3. xworkplace-user
  4. xworkplace-dev
for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively.

The developer team would be grateful for feedback on these mailing lists.

DSTswitch version 1.80 is now available.
For those of you who don't know yet, DSTswitch is a utility that interprets the TZ environment varible and automatically adjusts the system time by using this information (DSTswitch does not require your computer to be connected to the Internet). Well, that's at least DSTswitch's main purpose.

What's new in version 1.80:
  1. Reduced memory footprint
  2. Slightly changed user interface
  3. Display possibilities in title bar extended (Uptime, UTC, Net Beat, Millennium counter)
  4. Re-designed TCP/IP interface. It now accepts multiple client connections running simultaneously, and got rid of this system blocking problem as well.

gsview 2.91 beta (from Klaus Staedtler)
Ghostgum has released Ghostview 2.91 beta. Ghostview is the PM Frontend to ghostscript.

Some clarification:
Gsview 2.9 is identical to Gsview 2.8 with two differences:
  • it works with Ghostscript 6.01
  • Pstotext is broken, copying the corresponding pstotext files from Ghostview 2.8 to 2.9 fixes this bug.

Gsview 2.91 is identical to Gsview 2.81 beta with one difference, it works with Ghostscript 6.01

Gsview 2.91 is a bugfixed Gsview 2.90 (but with the broken pstotext !), it can be registered, although it works after also unregistered, it only shows a 'nag' screen.

Don't bother about the possibility to register, it's better that free software is further developed and the developer wants some cash for it, instead the other way round (remember Staroffice)

4D Tic-Tac-Toe (from Marty)
Play Tic-Tac-Toe as you've never seen it before! This version of the game actually requires thought! ;-)

Challenge your mental imaging capabilities and boggle your mind while getting the pants beat off of you by a stupid computer program running in a FULL SCREEN 640x480 8 bit display in OS/2!

This is a simple application I threw together using Scitech's excellent MGL (Multiplatform Graphics Library). Though it is not terribly graphically impressive, it exercises the ability of MGL to change to 640x480 8 bit color screen mode and display graphics and directly access the hardware color palette. If all reports from this application are good, I will port more graphically impressive applications to OS/2 using Scitech's MGL (such as Retrocade).

Also after receiving some feedback, I will release the source to this program to the public.

REQUIREMENTS:
You *must* install and boot up with a copy of SDDHELP.SYS from Scitech's Display Doctor software from beta 19 or higher. You must do this NO MATTER WHICH VIDEO DRIVERS YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
If the Scitech Display Doctor video drivers work with your video hardware, USE THEM. :-)

FEEDBACK:
Feedback is very much encouraged and welcome. I need to know how well MGL is working with your systems before I can decide it is worthwhile to port a larger application using MGL. Let me know whether or not this works with your hardware and drivers. Write to mamedev@stny.rr.com.

Be sure to read the ReadMe.OS2 file included completely before using this software.

WarpNote 1.91 (from Uwe Schlenther)
Tired of those yellow sticky notes that won't stick on your monitor? Here come the sticky notes that remain where you put them: On your OS/2 desktop. WarpNote gives you easy access to little yellow windows where you can note down everything you want. The program is simple and easy to use and consumes as little memory as possible. Each and any feature can be configured and adjusted to the user's needs. Extensive scripting capabilities give you unlimited possibilities (a birthday-reminder is included as an example script). A Blowfish encryption interface ensures that private data is stored in a secure way. WarpNote is an ideal desktop companion, a fire-and-forget solution to keep all sorts of information - e.g. your shopping list or even confidential information like banking data, passwords or PIN numbers. This version is merely a bugfix release that corrects a bug in the password dialog and a bug in control center handling. (Homepage of WarpNote)

Apache/2 2.0 Alpha1 (from Andreas Linde)
Alpha 1 of the new Apache 2.0 Webserver has been released.
A short description:
Apache 2.0a1 is a public alpha of the forthcoming Apache 2.0, an update which includes several new enhancements, including the new Apache Portable Run-time and the new Multi-processing modules.
With Apache Server v2.0 comes a serious reorganization of code that makes it much easier to take full advantage of a platform's features, especially non-unix platforms like OS/2. The enhancements that have so far been implemented in Apache for OS/2 v2.0 include
  • Multi-threaded instead of multi-process for greatly reduced memory consumption and better performance.
  • Bypassing of the EMX unix compatibility library for both file and network I/O by using OS/2 API calls directly for better performance.

Testing of the current development code shows the improvements over v1.3.9 as
  • More than double the connections per second.
  • Less than 1/10th the memory consuption.

This is an alpha release, and is for experimental purposes; use at your own risk.

BgMetrics update (from Wayne Swanson)
BgMetrics, a native OS/2 solution to track Blood Glucose readings and dietary info for diabetics is now publicly available.

In doing research for the program it was discovered that the previous name of BgTracker was already in use. The name has been changed to avoid any conflict and the program has been updated.

BgMetrics will...
  • Track Bg readings for specific periods of the day.
  • Track meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks)
  • Track meal "carb" values.
  • Track weight.
  • Track daily average of Bg readings.
  • Track daily total "carbs"
  • Graph Bg values, carbs and weight for any date range.
  • Print Bg or meal reports and print graphs.

Future plans include support for downloading data from selected glucometers and developing the database for other trackable items. (Fat, calories, A1C readings etc.)

We would also like to find a source of food data that we can glean fat, calorie, carbohydrate information from in order to create a meal calculator. If you know of a database or flat file that we can harvest (legally) please contact us.

If you, your family or friends have to track blood sugar and are looking for an OS/2 solution, please stop by the PillarSoft website and see if BgMetrics can work for you.

BgMetrics is not for sale at this time. We ask all users to please use it freely as the features are fleshed out and do not worry about it becoming commercial if you feel you won't be able to afford it. We will find a way to make it available to you without missing any usage or losing any data. It is our intention that no person go without any help we can provide.

Retrocade for OS/2 Alpha 2 (from Marty)
Retrocade for OS/2 Alpha 2 is available for download.

Retrocade is a multi-arcade game emulator, similar to MAME. It supports fewer games than MAME does (about 120 or so) but the emulation cores were designed for SPEED! The "business" part of the code was written almost entirely in assembly language and it shows!

In addition to the speed advantage over MAME, Retrocade offers a very attractive and futuristic GUI of its own making its oveall package very impressive. If you're a fan of MAME or a fan of old arcade games, give it a try!

The currently released version is *alpha* level code. Please be sure to read the ReadMe.OS2 file before running it for the first time. It currently has graphics and sound support, but lacks mouse and joystick support (which are coming soon). I'm releasing this version to get early feedback, so feel free to contact me about it.

Fixed in this version:
  • COMPLETE GRAPHICS OVERHAUL! All graphics glitches (Space Invaders, etc.) should now be GONE!
  • Scrolling games (1942, etc.) are now displayed correctly.
  • Games that wouldn't start up due to problems with the graphics sizing are completely fixed.
  • the -16bpp command line parameter should now work (though it is not recommended because it will slow things down and not make the games look any better).
  • Should work in all 16, 24, and 32 bit per pixel screen modes, though the 24 bpp modes are *REALLY* slow. 16 bit modes are fastest, but the 32 bit mode is quite fast too.
