PASUG Mtg: Thurs, Sep 22nd (from http://www.os2news.com)
.. PHILADELPHIA ALTERNATE SYSTEMS USER GROUP .. http://www.pasug.org The Philadelphia Alternate Systems User Group (PASUG) invites all interested computer users to attend the September meeting. . THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd, 2005 7:00-10:00PM .. Bryn Mawr Community Center, 9 S. Bryn Mawr Ave, Bryn Mawr,PA *** THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd MEETING AGENDA *** .. -- BeOS REINCARNATIONS: ZETA and HAIKU -- Welcome back to all. Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. We look forward to another year of interesting meetings.
It gives me great pleasure to announce that PASUG member Ben Bowers plans to attend the September 22nd meeting, following a rather lengthy convalescence. We wish him a continued return to a 100% healthy condition. All PASUG members are urged to come on out to the meeting Thursday evening to welcome Ben back on the road to full recovery and renewed PASUG participation.
In addition to his support for OS/2, Ben has also been a long- time fan of (the now defunct) BeOS which has been reincarnated as a commercial operating system named ZETA being developed in Germany by YellowTab Co. (www.yellowtab.com). Another parallel open source project named HAIKU is under development by groups of volunteer programmers all around the world.
At the September meeting, Ben will conduct a presentation and demo of ZETA 1.0, YellowTab"s recent first commercial product release from the BeOS family. We will examine how YellowTab"s description of the ZETA 1.0 product compares to their claims, quoted as follows ....
"ZETA is a very fast operating system written from the ground up to get more out of your hardware than any other. With a true micro kernel is of only 640 KB and a 64-bit journalling filesystem to make things fly. Never before was it so easy to create MP3"s or encode and decode videos. Never before was it so easy to partition a hard drive or create CDs. Needless to say, ZETA is also virus-free leaving you to concentrate on getting things done.
Discover the TRUE power within your computer - install ZETA today. It"s the cheapest upgrade you"ll ever do! Install ZETA in just a few mouse clicks and be working in a matter of minutes. And you don"t even have to worry about your old system and data - use the ZETA Bootmanager to install and manage other operating systems."
Ben will also briefly discuss the status of the ongoing HAIKU open source project, which is being redone. It"s progressing steadily, but will probably not be ready for release any time in the near future.
Other March agenda items include announcements, news & new software releases, Q&A session, and possible 50/50 raffle. Soft drinks, pretzels & chips will be available.
MEETING FORMAT & TIME SCHEDULE (Subject to change) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ .. 7:00 - 7:30 Meeting start, announcements, etc. .. 7:30 - 8:30 ZETA/HAIKU presentation/demo .. 8:30 - 8:45 Intermission: Refreshments, etc. .. 8:45 - 9:45 Q&A Session & General Discussions .. 9:45 Close-down, pack-up & exit building by 10:00pm. - - - - - Mark the date and time: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd at 7:00pm. PASUG meetings are open and free for all users, their guests and others interested in learning about OS/2, Linux & their associated technologies. Please try to be on time promptly by 7:00pm to avoid missing earlier parts of the meeting.
.. ** WE SUPPORT OPEN STANDARDS ** PASUG meetings are held at the Bryn Mawr Community Center, next to Ludington Library, at the corner of Lancaster and Bryn Mawr Avenues, Bryn Mawr, PA. on the 4th Thursdays of Jan to Oct, and the 3rd Thursdays in Nov and Dec.

The past, present and future of Warpzilla at Warpstock 2005. (from http://www.os2news.com)
Do you want to know where the browser for OS/2 is heading? And where it has been? We"ll take a trip down memory lane and also talk about where the browser on OS/2 is going. Come hear from Mike Kaply, the leading expert on our very own cutting edge, Mozilla based web browser for OS/2 and eComStation, give a presentation on the past, present and future of Warpzilla.
Michael Kaply has been involved with OS/2 since 1989. He started working on OfficeVision/2 and eventually became a member of the core OS/2 team, working on the help system and the acclaimed OS/2 Warp Tutorial. He is the co-author of "IBM"s Official OS/2 Warp FAQs" book along with Timothy F. Sipples. In 1996 he joined the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 team, and has been involved in every OS/2 browser release since Netscape Navigator 2.0.2, including leading development of about every release since Netscape Communicator 4.61. Currently he is the lead for IBM"s participation in the Mozilla/Firefox project. While his job no longer deals directly with OS/2, he is still considered the OS/2 browser expert within IBM, and he continues to be the module owner for OS/2 changes within Mozilla/Firefox.
