Junk Spy Version 2.0 (from Sundial PR)
With the release of Junk Spy 2.0, Sundial Systems has taken this field-proven tool and made it available to both OS/2 and Windows desktop computer users. Junk email (or "spam") is becoming an ever larger portion of what people receive in their inbox. For many people, they now get more "spam" than real email. And sorting it all can be a big waste of time. Junk Spy gives you back control of your inbox by identifying and dealing with that junk email so you don't have to. It becomes your "secret agent" in the war against spam.
"Our Junk Spy 1.0 customers have have told us how effective Junk Spy is, day-in and day-out, under actual field conditions" said Junk Spy product manager, Rollin White. "90% recognition of junk, with virtually no 'false hits' is common."
Junk Spy works by sitting between your email program and your mail server. It detects and identifies junk email in much the same way as your anti-virus software detects viruses. Each piece of mail is examined as it arrives at your desktop using a variety of techniques, based on both the source of the message and its content, to identify what is and isn't junk mail. Once identified and "marked," the junk mail can be processed in a number of different ways all designed to save you the time and frustration of having to deal with junk mail clogging up your inbox.
Junk Spy 2.0 adds more than just Windows support. In addition to Realtime Blackhole filtering, it now supports the ORBS (Open Relay Behaviour-modification System) list as well to watch for mail from possible spam relay points that haven't been used enough, or long enough, to make the classic black hole lists. And, a new Exception Wizard makes it even easier to "train" Junk Spy to recognize the occasional junk message that really is important to you.
Through July 31st, Junk Spy is offered at an estimated promotional street price of just $39 - a discount of $20 from the $59 list price. This includes a full year of automatic junk detection updates (a $24 value) at no extra charge.
Junk Spy 1.0 customers qualify for additional discounts and other promotions as well. For details, a demonstration, and to order, visit the brand new Junk Spy web site at www.JunkSpy.com

WarpIN/XWorkplace 0.9.11 (from Ulrich Moeller)
WarpIN and XWorkplace have both been updated to V0.9.11.
1. WarpIN V0.9.11 has been released.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again. V0.9.11 fixes a few annoying bugs.

2. XWorkplace V0.9.11 is out also.

XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project. For details, please refer to the download address below.
V0.9.11 fixes a few bugs which have been reported over the last few weeks.
To install XWorkplace, you also need WarpIN V0.9.9 or higher.
WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See www.netlabs.org/nosa and the above address for details. We have created four mailing lists at groups.yahoo.com:
  • -- warpin-user
  • -- warpin-dev
  • -- xworkplace-user
  • -- xworkplace-dev
for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers, respectively. We are grateful for feedback on these mailing lists.
Have fun!

WarpZIP updated (from M. Dodel)
We have updated the PillarSoft website with downloads of the new version of WarpZip.
This version adds the ability to view and extract individual files in WarpIn (Wpi) archives just like WarpZip allows you to do with any other archiving format. Great for digging out a file or two when you don't need everything from an archive or just to read the documentation or view the bitmaps in an archive without having to unarchive the whole thing.
There is much more to the program than is being discussed here so stop at:
http://www.pillarsoft.net/warpzip.html for more information.
We have also updated the PillarSoft Suite with the latest versions of all
our programs. More information and downloads of the PillarSoft Suite are available at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/suite.html
WarpZip is $29 and is available through BMT Micro, Mensys and others. The PillarSoft Suite contains this program plus 12 more OS/2 utilities for
only $99.

SysInfo/2 ver. 0.8.7 with PCI scan (from Alexey Smirnov)
New SysInfo/2 ver. 0.8.7 is published on Hobbes and on SysInfo/2 project homepage.

Main changers are:
  • Due to kind help by Joachim Benjamins new SyInfo/2 comes with new pictures!;
  • PCI BIOS scaning algorithm has been added. All information that it may find will be displayed on the "Device tree" page;
  • Memory Read&Write benchmark has been added to "Memory" page;
  • CPU/FPU Benchmark on the first page is normalized using test information from more than 15 different CPU test results. AMD Athlon results are looking very strange! But this is documented truth. ;-))
  • Video detection algorithm has been rewritten again. Some new information has been added and code size has been reduced;
  • Some erorrs have been corrected in the multimedia detection algorithm, stability has been increased;
  • The algorithm that determines the OS/2 version information has been enhanced.
  • The BIOS vendor detection algorithm has been rewritten. Vendor identificators were adedd for thouse BIOS manufacters as Intel, Packard Bell, Insyde, Dell, etc.
  • More over, more than 65% of all SysInfo/2 code were dramatically changed. I think that for now it is better to start a new beta testing phase, because the new SysInfo/2 is a really new product. ;-))
  • All code references to Sibyl DataBase Engine were erased from SysInfo/2 code. Note: I do not use Sibyl DataBase Engine, but some Sibyl base classes were referenced to it. After removing thouse references completely SysInfo/2 size and memory requirements were reduced greatly.
I am very interesting in your comments and bug reports. Thank you very much for thouse interest that my little work have got in OS/2 commuinity.

Updates at Pillarsoft (from Wayne Swanson)
The SFX Installer, KidStreet, the Enhanced E and the PillarSoft Suite have been updated.
The SFX Installer marries the installation tool for your software and it's own setup tools into one friendly package for point and click installation setups that are personalized for your software. SFX allows you to build an archive in standard or self-extracting format, with or without the installer.
Although the installer is distributed as shareware through BMT Micro, we invite freeware authors to use the installer free of charge as a small token of appreciation for their selfless work. Please read the license for more details.
KidStreet is an educational program for youngsters. Your kids may even have fun while honing their typing, spelling and math skills. KidStreet is in more of a test market phase at this time and is not for sale. Registered users of the PillarSoft Suite may consider it to be another component of the suite and use it indefinately.

REXXMail (update) (from Achim)
In the IACT article you find some words about REXXMail by M.C. de Geus. REXXMail uses intensive the WPS functionality and you find also a documentation "REXXMAIL in 21 steps" there.
Marcus de Geus has written some additional words to his program and that there will be an update available after weekend:
RexxMail has been updated with built-in POP3 and SMTP services, so users are no longer dependent on external programs (e.g. sendmail) to handle mail transmission. This makes installation and configuration of the program a lot easier. Of course, RexxMail still offers capabilities for handling mail transmission through external programs for those who prefer to do so. The updated RexxMail also includes a mailing list feature with the option of sending personalized messages. RexxMail is an object-oriented e-mail client written in REXX that makes full use of the extensive range of facilities offered by the OS/2 Workplace Shell (WPS). The RexxMail user interface uses only standard WPS components (folders, file and program objects, etc.). RexxMail mail message objects are separate, plain text, files that can be used anywhere on the WPS desktop. You can use your favourite editor to compose and read mail messages, and since both incoming and outgoing attachments (including HTML content) are presented as standard WPS objects, you can also use your favourite software to process these. The program takes up very limited system resources (the RexxComm-stripped RexxMail code weighs in at a puny 88 kB), and only when performing specific tasks such as sending, collecting, and processing e-mail message files. For all other tasks, it relies on the unequalled object-oriented data handling environment of the WPS. In addition, RexxMail offers an easy command-line interface for all its functions. RexxMail features a multi-user configuration as well as a wide range of individual user options, including:
  • choice of text reader for incoming messages
  • choice of text editor for outgoing messages
  • preprocessing of incoming attachments (e.g. virus scan)
  • preprocessing of outgoing attachments (e.g. data compression)
  • preselection of header entries to show for incoming messages
  • preconfigurable message object title content
  • send message text as quoted-printable or (word-wrapped) ASCII
  • send selected messages or all messages as ASCII text
  • intelligent 8-bit (PC850) to 7-bit (ASCII) text conversion
  • conversion to 8.3 filenames for selected filename extensions
  • full error and message traffic logging
  • RFC to ISO-sorted date conversion
  • choice of message icon stationery colours.
The updated version of RexxMail will be available after the weekend. RexxMail is released under the terms of the GNU license.

Larsen Commander update (from Leif-Erik Larsen)
Today (April 16 2001) Leif-Erik Larsen has released version 1.5 beta #3 of his popular GUI file manager and command processor, Larsen Commander.
Larsen Commander has a look and feel like the classic Norton Commander. It combines the very best of two very different worlds; - the command line and the file management panels. Both are available at the same time, and even in parallel while one or more commands are running in the background!
This new beta release has a lot of fixes and improvements. Here you have some of them:
  • New and smart dynamic buffering algorithm for file copy and move operation, making the progress dialog display more accurate information independent of the bandwidth.
  • Internal CD and PUSHD command now also accepts foreward slashes in directory names. (Unix-style slashes.)
  • Typing a drive letter in the drive selection dialog now activates that drive directly, without waiting for you to press enter.
  • The loading of filename items into file panels is much, much quicker.
  • Copy with shift+F5 and rename with shift+F6 now works again.
  • EA-names in EA-editor no longer shown with a corrupt prefix character.
  • Fixed some strange behaviour when copying and moving directories.

  • Fixed crash when using "add" pipe command.
  • Load Plug-in file dialog showed "pm123.exe*.dll" instead of "*.dll"
  • Path with no trailing backslash would not work with wavout.dll
  • I hope I fixed all crash in os2audio.dll ...
  • Fixed a few minor bugs in playlist playback and reduced delays

  • Timing problem with "*status" return values from \\PIPE\PM123 fixed!
  • "*status" would only work when a song is playing.
  • Fix crash and other problems when moving entries in playlist.
  • Added support for WM_CHANGEBR to update the bitrate display in real-time to reflect the current bitrate of VBR MP3s.
  • Manual updated thanks to Filip Molcan
  • Filenames longer than 100 characters can now be loaded properly.
  • Fixed a bug in playlist recursive add where PM123 would not read some directories at all (giving errors like "can't read x:\dir1\dir1")
  • Increased stack size to prevent crash in DOSCALL1.DLL during recursive add.
mpg123.dll
  • Fixed some non-MP3 files being recognized as MP3.
  • Fixed more floating point crashes (any left?) due to corrupted MP3.
  • Fixed a buffer overload crash that would sometimes happen.
  • Added support for WM_CHANGEBR
  • Enhanced MP3 detection mechanism. Once more less non-MP3 are identified as MP3 files..

Java game: Dungeon Master Java (from Joerg Sievers)
http://images.OS2.org/news/20010414_dungeon_small.gif" align=left border=0>The game is a remake of the classic FTL game Dungeon Master. It is written entirely in Java (A Java Version 1.3 Virtual Machine is required to run the game.), and is designed to run as a stand-alone application rather than an applet in a web browser. It has high-resolution graphics that simulate a 3D environment. Most of the graphics are rendered in the free ray-tracer Pov-Ray. Item graphics and character portraits are done by hand with a paint program, though many are simply taken from the original and its sequels and touched-up. Gameplay is very similar to the original, with real-time action, 90-degree turns, and step-by-step movement. One major change from the original is that monsters are not "stuck" in groups: they are completely free to wander, sometimes occupying a square with other monsters and sometimes not.

WarpIN and XWorkplace V0.9.9. (from Ulrich Moeller)
  1. WarpIN V0.9.9 has been released.
WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It is becoming more and more popular among OS/2 developers because of its flexibility and ease of use. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects) and can fully undo all the changes to your system again. V0.9.9 fixes a considerable number of bugs. WarpIN should be more stable in general now; some new features have also been added. You will need this new version to install the new XWorkplace:
  2. XWorkplace V0.9.9 is out also.
XWorkplace is the most feature-rich freeware Workplace Shell enhancer on the planet, and even better, it is OpenSource. XWorkplace is the successor to my popular
XFolder utility and has become a Netlabs project. Among many other things, XWorkplace gives you the following features:
    • Tons of folder enhancements, such as status bars, freely configurable context menus, global sort options, and much more.
    • Extended file associations, which replace the illogical WPS associations by type and filter separately.
    • Easy CONFIG.SYS management thru a WPS object.
    • A trash can which supports all WPS delete operations.
    • Replacement default icons.
    • Improvements to startup and shutdown: boot logos, a replacement startup folder, a complete rewrite of the OS/2 shutdown sequence (including automatic reboot, APM power-off, and a shutdown folder).
    • Mouse and keyboard enhancements, including sliding focus, sliding menus, global object hotkeys, folder hotkeys, mouse-button-3 scrolling.
    • Enhanced multimedia, such as more system sounds.
V0.9.9 fixes another pack of bugs and adds new features, among them new XCenter widgets. To install XWorkplace, you also need the latest WarpIN.
  3. My homepage has moved. To get the new WarpIN and XWorkplace, please go to: http://www.xworkplace.org
WarpIN and XWorkplace are Netlabs projects, released under the GNU General Public Licence. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS server. See http://www.netlabs.org/nosa and my homepage for details. We have created four mailing lists at groups.yahoo.com:
    • warpin-user
    • warpin-dev
    • xworkplace-user
    • xworkplace-dev
for WarpIn and XWorkplace users and developers,
respectively. We are grateful for feedback on these mailing lists.

gPhoto 2.0beta1 (from Bart van Leeuwen)
After nearly a year of work, the gPhoto team is proud to announce the first beta release of gPhoto 2.0. gPhoto 2.0 is a complete redesign and rethinking of the original gPhoto. This new release introduces a digital camera library API that allows any application to provide support for digital camera interaction. It includes support for serial-port and USB cameras, with the ability to easily support other physical connection types. Support is in place for Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, OS/2, and other Un*x variants. gPhoto 2.0 is extremely portable, allowing a single camera driver to be used on any platform that gPhoto supports! gPhoto 2.0 comes with a powerful command-line interface, but if you prefer a graphical interface, you have several to choose from, including native ones for both GNOME and KDE! Read more about gPhoto 2.0 at http://www.gphoto.net/gphoto2/. NOTE from Scott: wow. it's out in beta1. All pending changes were put into the tarball and CVS before release. There are OS/2 binaries available on the download page (Thanks Bart!!). The next release should be put out with some releases of the GUI's (if gtKam, GnoCam, and Kamera are near ready?). We'll set a date for that depending on the feedback we get (bugs, crashes, etc...) The FINAL gPhoto 2.0 release will include a formal Press Release (much better than this). Thanks to EVERYONE over the past year for all the help and time. We're doing great stuff here! :)
