Hobbes to accept *.wpi files (from archiver@hobbes.nmsu.edu)
(01/29/2001) Hello everyone. Well, we're going to begin accepting a new file compression format, namely .wpi, and I'm working right now on getting the right MIME type set up. This should be finished pretty soon.

eGroups.com becomes groups.yahoo.com (from Timur Tabi)
Because several OS/2 mailing lists are hosted on the free eGroups.com, I thought it would be helpful to mention that as of today (Jan 26, 2001), the eGroups.com domain is now groups.yahoo.com (aka Yahoo Groups). All email and web access will be automatically forwarded, so you won't need to change your bookmarks or web pages or address books, but you may want to anyway. The only hiccup in the transition is that you may need to "convert" your eGroups ID into a Yahoo ID. You'll definitely need to do this is you own or moderate any groups. You can convert by going to http://groups.yahoo.com/convwiz. The form will require you to give more personal information than I like, but you can then edit your preferences later and delete that information. Speaking of privacy, Irecommend you check out http://sneakemail.com/. It's a very cool free anti-spam and privacy service. The good news is that there are a few more features, the interface has been cleaned up a bit, and it's not any slower nor has anything been removed.

Warp City Auctions Open To All (from Tim Martin)
Warp City has opened their online Auction to all OS/2 users who wish to sell their personal items or to bid on items posted by other OS/2 users. The Auction service is free to all and no fees are charged for any of the services. Sellers and bidders are not limited to OS/2 items but may post any item they wish to auction off in a variety of categories.
Warp City encourages all OS/2 users with used software or other items to take advantage of this service. The Warp City Auctions are an avenue to ensure OS/2 native and other software is made available at reasonable cost to all who need and want it.

OS/2 PDD mailing list resurrected (from Timur Tabi)
The OS/2 PDD mailing list (pdd@os2ss.com) was a mailing list for discussion of OS/2 device driver development. Unfortunately, all of the mailing list servers on os2ss.com have died, so I've decided to resurrect the mailing list on eGroups.com.
I will be adding as many of the subscribers of the old list to this one. Everyone who is added by me will be get an email saying so. Feel free to unsubscribe yourself if you want. I know I'm taking an "opt-out" policy, but it's the only way to get the mailing list going again in a timely manner.

Hotmail: i8n fix for PMMail/2 (from Samuel Audet)
Hotmail forgets to add the 'Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit' header field, and since OS/2 default code page is not iso-8859-1, i8n characters are not rendered properly by default in PMMail/2. To fix that, a filter needs to be added to add the missing header field. The fix? Do the following.
Make fixhotmail.cmd:

/* adds "Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit" at the beginning of a message */
parse arg mailfile
backup = substr(mailfile,1,lastpos('.',mailfile))'bak'
'ren' mailfile substr(backup,lastpos('\',backup)+1)
'echo Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit >' mailfile
'copy' mailfile'+'backup mailfile
'del' backup
In PMMail filters, add a new Incoming filter, with the complex search template:

H = "Content-Type" &
!(H="Content-Transfer-Encoding")
As action, specify "User hook (background)" and type in the path to 'fixhotmail.cmd'. Finally, some sense out of mail received from Hotmail.

OS/2 with a new logo :-) (from Eugen Kuleshov)
If you like to have some OS/2 related fun stuff you may visit this CafePress page. You maybe courious why wasp placed into logo? It's simple. Actually russian OS/2 customers pronounce name of this OS like 'os popolam' (something like 'os divided by two') and in Russian 'os' means 'wasp'. So. 'Half of wasp' can be real symbol of OS/2 in Russia. :-)

We will continue to expand this support with the help of our volunteers. If you can help with the German version there is a mailing list at http://www.egroups.com/group/os2mag-german. Once we are comfortable with the German version of the Newsletter, we would consider expanding to other languages if there is interest and volunteers to help with the project. If you are interested in pursuing this please contact me at editor@os2voice.org. Together we put the International in VOICE. :-) And as always, a big thank you to our writers and editors. Without them there'd be no VOICE Newsletter. Please consider writing an article for the Newsletter. We have added a page with Guidelines for Article Submissions to the VOICE Newsletter. The German version is at here.
