new CandyBarZ (from Adrian Gschwend)
CandyBarZ, the ultimate tilebar (and more) enhancer, got a new release.

The new release is much more stable and there are some very nice themes included, feel free to add your own theme!

There is also a mailinglist available, please report problems to this list.

The webpages are still out of date and I will not update them until the new web-engine of OS/2 Netlabs is ready.

Larsen Commander update (from Leif-Erik Larsen)
The Larsen Commander has reached its ninth public release, which is version 0.98.1.

Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that has a "look and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander. The most notable difference is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and still has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor. Powerful, nice and snappy.

Changes since the previous public release
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Add: The INFO panel can now be activated and navigated by using the keyboard.
Fix: The "Re-Scan Drive" command didn't work in release 0.98.
Fix: The scrollbars of the INFO panel was not always
updated correctly when panel size was changed.
Fix: Giving command "XXX /?" was not transfered to the shell even if XXX was defined to always be transfered to the shell.
Fix: Command for changing filename case didn't work at all since version 0.98.
Fix: File panel was not fully cleared after deleting all files from root directory in FULL mode.
File Commander v2.11 (from Brian Havard)
I've released a minor update to File Commander that fixes a few bugs. They are:
  • If an INI file was specified on the command line without an absolute path, INI files would get saved to whatever directory FC was showing.
  • Editor: Undo wasn't setting the changed flag.
  • Fix race condition that would sometimes cause failure to enter archives on some drive types (esp network).
  • After toggling the hidden files option with the left panel active and both panels visible, accessing files on the left panel would fail until TAB was used or an external command executed.
  • If a file's time stamp was in the future the %age function would treat the file as very old.
  • OS/2: When using the "Start minimized" option in FC/2's program object, the icon's 'window' would be stretched to the size of a full window.
I've also converted the manual file for Win32 to Windows help format (using ViperHelp) so the FC/W ZIP no longer has to include the INF file viewer. This brings the ZIP size down to the same level as the OS/2 version.
As a result of this, the internal help file is now called fc[w].fch (for File Commander Help) so it doesn't clash with fcw.hlp which is now the manual. I've also removed the 'Manual' configuration option (its original purpose became redundant long ago).
Weasel 0.87 bug (from Peter Moylan)
Yesterday's release of Weasel contained some discrepancies between Setup and PMSetup, with a couple of unfortunate side-effects:
  • A SYS1041 error message in the log each time mail is received.
    Basically harmless, but annoying.
  • Problems with Setup writing lists of host names to the INI file, so that Setup and PMSetup give results that disagree with each other.
If these problems are affecting you, you can fetch a fixed version of Setup.exe.
(Alternatively, you can just stick to using PMSetup.) Sorry about the errors.
Palm Pilot and Lotus Notes (from Ferenc Pal)
jConduit for Lotus Notes is a jConduit package for
jSyncManager to allow users to synchronize their PalmPilot or IBM WorkPad with Lotus Notes on their Java enabled computers, running OS/2 Warp. It has the similar functionality like EasySync by Lotus has under Windows 95.
Features:
----------------
Full synchronization with Lotus Notes 4.5x for OS/2. The application has been developed in Java. It includes full synchronization with Lotus Notes Address Book, Journal, Calendar and ToDo. There are several types of synchronization, like full bi-directional, one-way, etc. Database what you want to synchronize with, is also selectable.
Weasel 0.87 (from Peter Moylan)
The latest version of Weasel can now be picked up.
LIST OF CHANGES
Version 0.87
  • New system for wildcard matching on host names.
  • Optional filter for incoming mail.
  • Relay mail allowed to specified destinations.
  • Setup updated to allow for new options.
  • Outgoing mail is held until a file 'ONLINE' exists.
  • Complete rewrite of PMSetup.
As you can see, this is a fairly major change (although for many of you the changes are in features you'll never use). The biggest change is that the PMSetup that I released with the previous version has been thrown away and replaced by something that looks about the same but is a whole lot faster.
Now that PMSetup is up to an acceptable speed, and that it also supports remote configuration, I'm thinking of throwing away the text-mode Setup.exe, on the grounds that there's not much point in trying to support two programs that do essentially the same thing. If you have any strong opinions on this, let me know.
Xvnc server (from Akira Hatakeyama)
I got bug report and patch for 'vncserver.cmd' script in Xvnc for OS/2. Now I've applied that patch and updated the documents, and released new version (or package) of Xvnc for OS/2.
You can get Xvnc server for OS/2 under my OS/2 tools webpage.
VNC is a system to access remote desktops from a local machine. It consists of a remote server and a local viewer (client).
This release is an X based VNC server, not for PM server. You cannot access the WPS/PM desktop with it.
DFSee version 3.01 (from Jan van Wijk)
I just released version 3.01 of the DFSee utility, which has some windowing enhancements, more LVM display and some fixes (mainly DFSDOS).
The text-based windowing system implements a command-line with a history buffer so previous commands can be recalled and edited easily. Also, the output goes to a large scrollable window so you can page back and forth.
For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.
Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment OS/2, Win-NT and DOS versions exist.
I would very much like to hear some experiences you have with DFSee and the new user-interface, either positive or negative.
And for Warp-server-for-e-bussines users (Aurora), I am very interested in some real-life output for JVM volumes, created with the 'part', 'part +' and 'Plist lvm' commands.
With some delay, it will be on HOBBES as well ...
Updated REXX programs (from Marcus de Geus)
I have updated the "InfoColl", "KeybUSBR", and "RexxComm" programs on my website. I mistakenly assumed that a running system would also have the REXX utilities library loaded (actually, I'm so used to them being automatically loaded at boot time, I simply forgot all about them). Running the old versions of the REXX programs will result in an error on a system on which the REXX utilities are not loaded beforehand. This has now been corrected.
Moneydance 2.0.3 (from Sean Reilly)
I'm happy to announce that Moneydance 2.0.3 is now
available.
Version 2.0.3 includes new features such as check printing, and a new Income/Expense report. In addition, clicking on column headers now sorts transactions, currency fields now accept math expressions, the home-page now includes a total value of all accounts in the base currency, and many minor improvements and bug fixes have been made. Functions involving printing should work much better on OS/2 now, working around a bug in OS/2 Java where all text is printed in an extremely small font.
AutoGet/2 v0.99.70 (from Daniel Caetano)
Some time ago I created a little C program to solve some problems that I was having with Auto Wget Daemon. Well, I was developing it with the help of some friends, and the result was a good program called AutoGet/2. It is like an "enhanced" Auto Wget Daemon, and I invite you to try it.
Unfortunately, I lost the source code, and so I'll not be able to support it, BUT I have been using it for 6 months and I had no problems.
Hope you all like it.
Squeak v2.4 for OS2 (from Michael Cole)
Juan Manuel Vuletich has released a current Squeak ported for OS2.
Squeak is the open source smalltalk. It comes with, or rather is, an entire development environment with many surprises. Squeak applications run bit-identical on just about every OS and hardware architecture in common (and not so common) use.
Juan's port includes full network access and handles native sound and uses DIVE for fast video. This latest version of Squeak comes with Midi support, a web browser and server, an email application, shockwave support, a 3D animation system, remote update and authoring, and more. By the way, Squeak is written in itself - you can inspect, change and extend any part of the language, application, or even the virtual machine, while it is running.
Smalltalk is a pure OO language that been around for a long time. Squeak is a dialect that is highly compatible with Smalltalk-80 (the historical standard). The team behind Squeak includes the original authors of Smalltalk (including Alan Kay of PARC fame). They mostly hide out at Disney (after living at Apple for a few years). Squeak is evolving rapidly.
Squeak should be of special interest to the OS2 community. This is a this is a state-of-the-art cross-platform language and development system. It deserves a careful look by everyone interested in OO programming. It is also way more fun. (WARNING: this stuff is addictive).
DreckBar v5.d (from Murray Weismer)
Version 5.d of DreckBak for OS/2 has been uploaded to my site, as well as Hobbes, BMT, and others. Full German Language version will be posted in a few days. Documentation now also in INF format. Refinements and enhancements.
Don't risk a hard drive crash with no reliable way to restore your system. You need no special devices or expensive software. DreckBak for OS/2 Hard Drive Backup/Restore Suite, only requires some space on a device that is seen by OS2 as a Drive Letter (f:). GREAT for removable media drives and large hard disks. Compression provided by Info-Zip, Two separate file integrity tests, full logging, multiple exclusion filters, full automation, great tech support, and smart-alec comments are just the beginning. See why Warp City suggests this program. ("a keeper.")
Available at the support site, BMT Micro, Hobbes, "Your local drug store...... It's from Kansas."
Emacs 20.3.1 Update (from Jeremy Bowen)
I've just released an updated binary for Emacs 20.3.1
The zip-file contains 3 files:
  • emacs.exe - Fixed Emacs executable version 20.3.1.2
  • pmemacs.exe - Concurrent PM Emacs release.
  • DOC - Internal documentation file for Emacs
This release corrects several defects in the initial version.
  1. You are no longer restricted to running under PM. Emacs can be invoked as a text-mode application.
  2. Minimizing the Emacs PM frame now works without crashing Emacs.
  3. The OS/2 clipboard is available for cut/paste.
  4. The function 'insert-file-contents' now works correctly and allows the operation of RCS version control and M-x revert-buffer (among other things)
Outstanding issues revolve around better internationalisation support and various minor bug-fixes.
The Gnus newsreader works well and I'll be working on Mail support this weekend. Let me know of any bugs/problems you have.
PGPro Scripts v3.0 (from freiheit)
Don Eitner, author of The 13th Floor website and enthusiast of TrueSpectra's Photo>Graphics Pro for OS/2, today released another significant upgrade to his free, open-source PGPro Scripts. Version 3.0 includes a third REXX script for creating "star burst" effects as well as several feature enhancements and bug fixes from earlier versions.
CHANGES IN V3.0
------------------------------
3DShadow.cwx - Fixed a bug where cancelling the script did not return the project to its original unit of measurement as well as a bug that allowed for 0 or 1 shadow instances, which would lead to an error.
GreetingCard.cwx - Now maintains user-defined tool for card text. Also added option to emboss text.
Starburst.cwx - Creates a starburst within the current project in a user defined color. Can also size the starburst to sit snugly behind a selected text object.
