Warpstock Europe 2001: Warpstock is not for OS/2 Users only (from Luc Van Bogaert)
Warpstock Europe 2001 is for everyone with a healthy interest in
computers. Being an OS/2 or eComStation user is absolutely no requirement
for attending the event. Even if you are running Linux, Windows, MacOS or
something else, you will still be able to learn about new and exciting
things at Warpstock Europe. No matter what computing environment you are
working in, the three-day presentation schedule contains several sessions
that will surely be of interest to you.

IT professionals and System Administrators will benefit greatly from
several lectures on LAN management in a heterogeneous environment. Alain
Rykaert's presentation on LAN Server Management Tools, discusses a number
of self written REXX procedures for LAN management, based on many years of
experience in the field. Likewise, as IBM's WorkSpace On-Demand now
supports more platforms than ever, Oliver Mark's overview of this product
should certainly be of interest to you. Starfire Titan also offers
cross-platform administration for enterprise networked systems. Come to
Warpstock Europe to discover all these products.

Programmers are in for a real treat at Warpstock Europe 2001. Serenity
Systems' own Kim Cheung will be there to talk about C to REXX interface
technology and how it can be applied in all kinds of commercial packages.
Rony Flatscher will be talking about Object REXX and how it can become a
powerful development tool not only for OS/2, but in a multiplatform
environment as well, as it has been made available for AIX, Linux and
Windows. Another one of Rony's presentations, which should interest Java
programmers, discusses Java Bean scripting using REXX. Finally, Stefan
Schwarzer will introduce Python as another cross-platform high level
scripting language that is gaining popularity.

As the USB hardware interface is extremely popular nowadays, you should
come to Warpstock Europe for a general introduction about the way USB
works. In addition, programmers who want to exploit the benefits of USB
will actually learn how to develop their own USB drivers.

Users of the excellent image manipulation program "The Gimp", running on
Linux, Windows or OS/2 will definitely learn a few new tricks during
Gerrit Schoenmaker's and Onno Tabak's session about font installation and
graphic tips and tricks.

If you have been thinking about trying OS/2 or eComStation, without giving
up the ability to run your Windows applications, you should definitely
attend the "Odin - update, tips and tricks" session, where you will be
astounded by the number of Windows programs that can be run seamlessly on
the OS/2 Desktop today. Moreover, the introduction of "Virtual PC for
OS/2" by Innotek should be enough reason to attend Warpstock Europe and
discover this exciting new product that will extend your use of OS/2 and
eComStation by letting you run even more applications than you ever
thought possible.

The Warpstock Europe 2001 Conference will be held on November 2-4, 2001 at
the 'KH Limburg' College in Diepenbeek (Hasselt), Belgium. Warpstock
Europe is an annual gathering of developers, vendors and users of the
OS/2 and eComStation operating systems, for the purpose of education,
providing information and support to everyone with an interest in these
operating systems or related technology. More information is available at

AOL protocol and source code (from Jason Stefanovich)
OSS (OpenSourceSoftware) AOL'ers have been working hard to figure out AOL's proprietary protocol for their online service and popular AIM messenger. That document "The AOL Protocol" gives in depth information on the login and handshaking between the AOL client and servers.
Also visual basic source code and more at http://www.aol-files.com under "AOL Protocol & Sign on and IM example". Finally a nearly full, but unofficial specification for the AIM protocol at "FAIM": http://www.zigamorph.net/faim/protocol/. Great information for anyone who might think about implementing either of these very popular services under OS/2.

We'll have several basically identical clean systems ready and waiting Saturday morning. The plan is to install a different OS/2 flavor on each machine, and our targets are eCS, Warp 4, Convenience Pak, and Warp Server for e-Business. We may even try installing eCS over an existing OS/2 desktop just to see what happens.
Cake? Did we mention cake? You already know to expect free donuts, but this is extra special. It's our anniversary celebration after all, so of course there will be fattening treats for the occasion. And And gifts? You bet! A super celebration raffle with no junk. You'd You'd have to say we're packing a lot into this one meeting!

AC 97 and VIA chipset (from Roderick Klein)
Some people have contacted me about this driver, asking what the status was. Well VIA released a driver about 1 or 1/2 half years ago. This driver worked in a few cases but was for the rest a disaster (sorry if developers read this). For eComStation I'm working on collecting drivers and getting a license to include them. The VIA driver also has my attention and I have contacted VIA and past along the bugs which where documented in the patch on hobbes. I also had a lot of cases where there was no sound. Or system sounds where played to fast. Also with playing a video file I got a trap. I past al this information along. Last week I was told they where working on a new version.
All I can say, lets hope it has improved and keep an eye on www.via.com.tw. When it will be released I don't know.
BTW: Does somebody out there have a VIA motherboard with a BUILD ON nic chipset from VIA. I have drivers that need testing.

Warpstock Europe 2001: Tickets are now available (from Luc Van Bogaert)
The Warpstock Europe 2001 Event Team is pleased to announce that tickets for the upcoming OS/2 Warp and eComStation IT-conference are now available for online purchase. You can buy your Warpstock Europe tickets and register for the event using a secure online registration system from Mensys BV.
"We have made a special effort to make attending Warpstock Europe 2001 very affordable for everyone", says Team Coordinator John Bijnens. "If people register now using the online registration system they will save money and benefit from substantial discounts" John explains, "and in some cases online purchase will save them up to 30% compared to when the tickets are bought on site at the registration desk".
Thanks to the Dutch HCC, main sponsor of this year's event, there will be free entrance to Warpstock Europe 2001 for all HCC members upon display of their current membership card at the registration desk. For students, a special discount is available.
For everyone else, a standard registration including tickets for three days costs 700 BF, which is less than 17.5 Euro and a one day ticket is only 300 BF or less than 7.5 Euro. "That's really cheap compared to most other IT-conferences of this kind" says Team member Christian Langanke, "especially considering the added value of three days packed with professional level lectures." And it get's even better because attendees will receive a free CD-ROM containing the complete content of the conference lectures.
Several registration schemes exist to accommodate everyone's needs. Tickets can be purchased for one, two or three days with a special discount for students, upon display of their current student ID card at the registration desk. All registration options are available on the Mensys web site and should fit both students or IT-professionals, one-day visitors or people coming from abroad to stay the whole three days of the event. For those who don't want to use the on line registration system, on site registration will be available at the conference.
The Warpstock Europe 2001 Conference will be held on November 2-4, 2001 at the 'KH Limburg' College near Hasselt, Belgium. ZxMail announce special academic pricing (from Eric Lavoie)
I remember not having that much money when i was a student, and i want to encourage students to use OS2, i am announcing a special academic pricing for students. As long as ZxMail is used for personal use, and that you are a registered student you will be able to use ZxMail basic 10 user license for 10$US which is 25$ off the regular price. but you must send me the appropriate information. So if you are interested please contact me at elavoie@zeryx.com.
Furthermore i am releasing a free 2 users license, the license info will be posted in the following days.
n.b. I was made aware of a key generator circulating that provides an unlimited number of user license for ZxMail, those users that have used this will find that ZxMail stops working if such a key was used, so please encourage OS/2 software development, and stop using such tools.
