Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 v1.5 (from Dennis J. Tuchler)
In an earlier mail WarpCast posted a message stating that there was some confusion about pricing and availability for Lotus SmartSuite for OS/2 Warp 4 R1.5. After further investigation we have confirmed the following: You can purchase SmartSuite at Indelible Blue, the LotusStore and possibly other resellers. The price, not including sales tax or shipping, for the Upgrade version (you can also buy a full version license for R1.5) is $159.00 at the LotusStore, and $152.60 at Indelible Blue. All prices are in US dollars. Also, customers should note that Indelible Blue has a note on the SmartSuite R1.5 page that reads:
Notice: Our vendor had provided us with incorrect pricing on this product. Any customers who have purchased at the higher price will automatically have their price adjusted to the correct one. We apologize for any inconvenience!

Beta Testers Needed for Dragen FTP Client (from Keith Cotroneo)
Many years ago I authored an FTP client called SFTP. It was a Visual Rexx product that I distributed as freeware. I have been working slowly for about three years on a new ftp client. I call it Dragen FTP. "Drag" "En" for "Drag" enabled". Dragen consists of a C core that handles FTP and a visual rexx front end. Dragen is much more flexible and powerful than sftp. I also believe that it has a unique feature set that will offer a useful contribution to OS/2 computing. The core FTP module is about three years old and very stable. The rexx interface is pretty clean. I still have documentation and some polishing to do.
I intend to distribute the product as as shareware, or
"trustware."
There are two versions that I need to test. The shareware implementation is fully enabled, but will involve a fairly painless user permission request to my FTP server. The pay version doesn't require this.
Anyhow, I am about to the point of getting it out for some limited testing. I need some people to check out both versions and give me their thoughts. I would offer a license in consideration for your assistance.
As I mentioned above, this will be a limited test period, since I have been using the product myself for about six months. So, I am looking for a few good people to help.
If you would like to apply to be a Dragen FTP tester.
Please, send email to me.
Please include a brief statement about your experience with os/2:

  • How long you have been using os/2 (I would like to get a mix of experience).

  • How often you use FTP and the products you currently use for FTP.

  • Are you connected with any commercial or shareware
    software businesses or enterprises?

Joystick Device Driver Contest (from Jason Stefanovich)
I have received a new entry in the MAMERun Joystick Device Driver Contest from Vesa J, which adds several improvements. Vesa has also updated his standards proposal. The total value of cash and prizes is now over $300 US. If you're sitting around bored this holiday this might be a great way to help that big credit card payment in January. (smile)

What is it?

Write your own joystick device driver for OS/2 and you could win $300 plus valuable prizes and earn the respect and gratitude of OS/2 gamers around the world! With the many new games available and the advance of game controllers there arises a need for a better joystick device driver than IBM's advanced joystick device driver. Support for new controller features, such as 8+ buttons or USB, will greatly enhance the OS/2 gaming experience for gamers as well as developers.

I am looking for additional sponsors for this contest. If you would like to contribute please go to: http://home1.gte.net/stefanj/sponsor.htm

Any questions can be sent to me at Stefanj@gte.net.

Notice for Netscape/2 2.02/4.04 Users (from Mark Dodel)
From "Network Computing Software (NCS) Support News Items" page
Verisign Expiration Information: Important Notice to Webmasters, Internet Administrators, and Users (updated December 22, 1999)

Netscape Communicator 4.05 or earlier include root certificate authority (CA) certificates set to expire on December 31, 1999. Users of these browsers will see an additional dialog box when connecting to secure sites after January 1, 2000. The root CA certificate expiration does not affect SSL encryption. A user may safely click on Continue and proceed with secure transactions.

To eliminate the additional dialog box, the user must upgrade their browser or update expiring Verisign certificates. IBM recommends that all users upgrade their browser to Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp from
Software Choice
.

Since many customers are unable to upgrade their browsers at this time, the following summarizes the choice of solutions for each version:
  • Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 users may upgrade their browser, update all expiring Verisign certificates, or ignore the additional dialog box.
  • Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2 Warp users may upgrade their browser, update all Verisign expiring certificates, or ignore the additional dialog box.
  • Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp users have updated root CA certificates and need take no action.

  • Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2

Choice # 1: Upgrade Your Browser
    Please go to
    Software Choice
to select and download Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp.

Choice #2: Update all expiring Verisign certificates that shipped with your browser Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 users may update all expiring Verisign certificates.
This solution provides a replacement for your current certificate database file. Please be aware that any certificates you have added since you installed the browser will be removed with this procedure. You will have to accept those certificates again when you go to the originating Web site.

Get the new CERT.DB (hold left SHIFT Key and Left Mouse Button to Download) for Netscape Navigator 2.02 and place in a temporary directory.
Shut down the browser and back up (rename) the file CERT.DB
found in your Netscape 2.02 directory.
Place the new CERT.DB in your Netscape 2.02 directory.

Note: If you re-install your browser, you will need to replace the CERT.DB file again. If your certificates file becomes corrupt, your browser will rebuild the original certificates file and you will need to replace the CERT.DB file again.

Choice # 3: Ignore the Additional Dialog Box
Remember your other choice is to inform users about the dialog box and to make sure they know that they can click continue to ignore the warning and continue with full SSL encryption for their transaction.
  • Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2 Warp

Choice # 1: Upgrade Your Browser
    Please go to
    Software Choice
to select and download Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp.

Choice # 2: Update all expiring Verisign certificates or the Verisign/RSA Secure Server Certificate

Netscape Communicator 4.04 for OS/2 Warp users and administrators have two options and may replace all the expiring Verisign certificates included in your browser today or may replace just the Verisign/RSA Secure Server Certificate.

Option A: Update all expiring Verisign certificates that shipped with your browser

IBM is providing this interim workaround until you are able to upgrade your browser to Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp. This interim solution provides a replacement for your current certificate database file.

Note: Have you added your own certificates since you began using the browser? If no, go to 2.
    • Start Netscape Communicator 4.04
    • Click on Security icon (the padlock)
    • Click on Certificates--Yours
    • Select all the certificates
    • Click on Export and follow instructions

Get the new CERT7.DB (hold left SHIFT Key and Left Mouse Button to Download) for Netscape Communicator 4.04 and place in a temporary directory.

Shut down the browser and back up (rename) the file CERT7.DB found in your current profile directory in Users in Netscape 4.04 directory. For example, this might be d:/netscape/users/myprofile.
Place the new CERT7.DB in your current profile directory.
    Restart Netscape Communicator 4.04.

Note: If you previously exported your own certificates in Step 1, the last thing to do is:
    • Click on Security icon
    • Click on Certificates--Yours
    • Click on Import All Certificates (you may need to scroll to see this button) Use your password from Step 1 and import the file you saved in Step 1

Option B: Update only your Verisign/RSA Secure Server Certificate used by many banking institutions
    Shut down the browser
    • Back up (copy) the file CERT7.DB found in your current profile directory in Users in Netscape 4.04 directory. For example, this might be d:/netscape/users/myprofile.
    • Restart Netscape Communicator 4.04
    • Delete the Verisign/RSA Secure Server CA which expires Dec 31, 1999
    • Click on Security icon (the padlock)
    • Click on Certificates--Signers
    • Select Verisign/RSA Secure Server CA
    • Click on Delete and click OK

Now you are ready to add the updated Verisign/RSA Secure Server CA, please go to the Verisign site to obtain step-by-step instructions specific to Netscape Communicator 4.X.

Choice # 3: Ignore the Additional Dialog Box

Remember your other choice is to inform users about the dialog box and to make sure they know that they can click continue to ignore the warning and continue with full SSL encryption for their transaction.

FreeOS - A free OS/2 clone (from Ralf Reiterer)
I recently surfed to OS/2 VOICE and found an interesting project called FreeOS. The goal of it is to fully replace OS/2 by an open source OS/2 clone since it seems that IBM will drop OS/2 (support) in the furture.
The project is divided into several groups e.g. kernel, WPS, WPS enhancement, command line utilities. Everyone is welcome to join this interesting project even he has no programming experience.

RIPLing Windows from OS/2 Warp Server-Part 2 (from Micho Durdevich)
My second article about remote booting Windows from OS/2 Warp Server is available. It contains a couple of more complex constructions involving a RAM drive, and basic observations on Win98 RIPL setup. I have experimented with various Windows configurations, and the one that so
far RIPLes the best from Aurora is, somehow surprisingly, Win98 (without IE shell integration).

Odin team call for developers (from Nenad Milenkovic)
Since the first official release Project Odin has been further improved and the success people have with the software encouraged us to promote and recommend use of the Odin32 API as a tool for porting Windows applications to OS/2. Also, while the core team is focused on main issues, a need for some side-projects arised, that is for projects that are in one way or another related to Odin, but are (at least currently) out of the scope or the man-power of Project Odin team. Finally, but not the least important, we noted that while some Odin32 API subsets are nearing the completition, others lag substantially as no one is actively working on them.

Therefore we issue this call for OS/2 developers with some spare time in their pockets, to join us, help us or let us help them. What we suggest to you is to do one of the following:

Port a Windows application to OS/2
Although it is not as common as with Linux, there are many open source applications available for Windows. In some cases they are classical open source projects, sometimes they are giveaways from a product that is no longer marketed (an older game or an application) and sometimes it's a left-over from a bankrupt company or a project.

Whatever is the case, Odin32 makes porting to OS/2 as easy as it can be: we provide the API, platform, resource compiler, guidelines and active support!
We may even implement or improve Odin32 API functions you need if you're unable to do it yourself! If you are, you're more than welcomed, as this is the recommended way to work with Odin32, that is: helping others, too, instead of inventing workarounds or implementing the missing functions in your own applications.

And if you wonder why porting if Odin provides binary compatibility, bare in mind that with porting you may improve the code, fix bugs, adjust the application to OS/2 environment, add OS/2 specific features, etc. The initial version of porting guide is available at: http://www.netlabs.org/odin/DevelopersPorting.phtml

Implement one of Odin-related projects
There are couple of features and projects that are out of the scope of Odin, but that are related to it in one way or another. There is a need for that sofware, and most of it can be acomplished by extending and improving Odin. These projects are either tied to Odin's purpose or are dependant on it. Others are needed in oder to replicate some Win32 features, and we believe it's better to implement them separately, in a way that will enable them to benefit and be both used by regular OS/2 applications and reused from Odin32.

Some of those projects are: providing Win16 support, enabling WPS integration of Windows Desktop folder, creating Odin32 aware taksbar and 'Start' button, implementation of Windows and Control Panel applets and NT services control panel, enabling Win32 Netscape plugins to work in OS/2's Netscape, providing default file dialogs replacement based on Odin, 'skin' support for Odin32 dialogs and windows, creation of Glide API and standardized audio mixer API for OS/2...

By working on these projects you will not only help Odin but OS/2 users in general. For more informations please visit: http://www.netlabs.org/odin/DevelopersProjects.phtml

Join Project Odin team
Some parts of Odin32 are progressing very well, but there are some 'neglected' parts of the API that lag substantially behind the others as no one is actively working on them. These include some parts of DirectX, printing, multimedia, NetBIOS and serial port communication APIs. Some others would benefit from help, too, if you beleive that you coud not contribute to the above listed ones.

The curent status of implemented API subsets can be viewed at: http://www.netlabs.org/odin/DevelopersOdin32API.phtml

To join Project Odin, the first step would be to join the 'general' mailing list and establish contact with the team. You can do that from: http://www.netlabs.org/odin/ProjectJoining.phtml if you can help with the implementation of some of the core API subsets.

With this announcement we invite you to join one of the most important projects for the future of OS/2 as a desktop solution. The project is making great progress and is probably the OS/2 project with the highest number of active participants at the moment, but the goal we are aiming to achieve is huge and lot of work still remains to be done. There are many good Win32 applications out there and OS/2 users would benefit if they could use them. To learn more about Project Odin in general visit: http://www.netlabs.org/odin/

WinCast/TV Update (from Andreas Linde)
This message is taken from the WinCast mailinglist:
Hello,

as you may have noticed, there hasn't been much WinCast/TV for OS/2 news lately. Not to worry, things are still moving forward, just slowly. The driver version is currently at 1.041W and has been for some time. The basic driver is stable and production ready. As far as I know, all GRADD display issues have been resolved. However we still have not added support for some of the sound chips used on our higher end boards.

If you are using the latest SciTech GRADD drivers and you are having trouble using the WinCast with the GRADD filter enabled (see gradd.doc in you driver distribution) please let me know. Include VGA chipset information as well as color depth and resolution. Remember, to take advantage of GRADD you'll need to modify your config.sys and have an application that takes advantage of it. Currently Lorne Sunly's application is the only application that takes advantage of this new functionality. You'll need his "Digital TV MCD", available from his home page. The package includes both the application and the Media Control Device and works with our drivers.

IBM UK had promised to update their WarpTV application for use with the WinCast driver. Unfortunately they have not done this. However they have given Hauppauge Computer Works the source code and permission to update and distribute the application. I am currently working with Tim Snape to determine how to best update the application. While this is costing us time up front, I think in the long run this is a good thing as we will be able to make changes whenever necessary. I can not release the code into the public domain due to license restriction.

Some have you may have also noticed that the WarpTV download page has been down. This is due to a hard disk crash. We have registered www.OS2TV.com as our new home on the web. The site is currently under construction but should be up and running in a week or so.

I want to reassure all of you who are watching this project that development will continue. I made a promise to the OS/2 community and I intend to keep it. Both Tim and I (mostly Tim) have invested a lot of time and energy thus far and we are not stopping now. Thanks for hanging in there with us.

Project Concorde, Plan to run Win32 apps under OS/2 (from Bob St.John)
Serenity Systems markets a Managed Client(r) product which provides significant benefits to business users. We selected OS/2 as our desktop client for many reasons and one is the broad range of application support provided.
However, we continue to receive requests to support Win32 applications. Often this request is in addition to the requirement to run Presentation Manager or WorkPlace Shell applications, which are frequently Line of Business Applications.
After reviewing the product solutions available, we determined that the best response to this requirement would be a hardware modification to the workstation, enabling the system to support a host operating system and guest operating system. Release 1 of the product is anticipated to support an OS/2 host and a Windows guest.
The OS/2 support includes WorkSpace on Demand and OS/2 V4 (Merlin) with support for a Managed Client, run either as a diskless RPL client or as a traditional 'fat' client.
We have put an overview of this project on our web site, with an associated questionnaire which will help us through our product planning. Accessing th document requires that you have a valid log-on for the site. You can request a log on from Info@Serenity-Systems.com. Once you log on to the site, click on the Project Concorde image and, if it is appropriate, complete the questionnaire.

Odin Application Database (from Adrian Gschwend)
Some days ago the Odin Team at OS/2 Netlabs released the first public alpha version of Odin since the code is open source.
For those of you who still don't know it, Odin and Odin32 is an approach to get Win32 support in OS/2 (it is no emulator!). The homepage of the project is here.
We are very proud to say that the project made great progress, a lot more applications are running with Odin actually, especially slim programs. A lot of Odin users reported applications, which are running on OS/2 without problems, for example:

  • Acrobat Distiller 3.01 (PDF-File generator)

  • SmartDraw (Chart designing program)

  • CDRLabel (CD labeling application, even printing works very well)

  • WinHelp (Help system of Windows)

  • Word 6.0 for Windows NT 3.51 (32bit edition)

  • ... and more

One of the very promising applications is Lotus Notes R5, we are already able to start the application, you can find a screenshot of it at the Odin page (it's mentioned in the 'News' section). As you may
know we also working on a port of the Opera webbrowser to OS/2. With Odin32 we can actually compile the whole V4.0 Win32-Sourcecode without significant changes in the code.
If you are interested in our progress, check the Odin application database. You are also welcome to add your application to the database!
For impatient users we have daily builds available, note that we don't support any of the Odin versions actually because progress is changing almost every day. We are not that much interested in bug reports because of this reason. But we still need more skilled developers, the more support we get the faster we are! If you think that you can support our project, get more information about how to join at the Odin page.

An anouncement on Betanews informs us that the developers are getting closer to a beta of Opera, a www browser that is being ported to, amongst others, OS/2. The news, taken from an announcement on Opera's web site (dated Nov. 25th) says that the OS/2 port is about 50% done.

RIPLing Windows 95 from Warp Server (from Micho Durdevich)
There exists a very interesting and simple solution to set a Windows 95 diskless workstation to remote boot from a Warp Server (in other words, the whole Windows OS resides on the server). I have written a short article about that.
I would appreciate any suggestions/comments. I think the whole topic is relatively unexplored and deserves a nontrivial attention.
