BYTE article about OS/2 and eCS (from Joerg Skottke)
Bill Nicholls has written an article about OS/2 and eCS. The author managed to make a good summary of the state OS/2 and eCS are in.

Warpstock 2002 Bid Intents (from Luc Van Bogaert)
Would you like Warpstock 2002 to be in your home town? Do you think you and a few friends might be able to host a Warpstock? It's not as hard as you think.
But you need to hurry. June 1st is the cut-off date for the Warpstock 2002 "Intent To Bid". What's that? It's simply a quick email indicating that you're interested in hosting Warpstock 2002. All you need to specify in the email is:
  • The name of your city
  • The names of the people in your group (we recommend at least four)
  • Any other information you happen to have, like possible locations for the event.
And that's it! If you submit this email by June 1st, you'll have all summer to work on the actual bid. So call a few of your fellow OS/2 users and talk about it. Then send an email to bids@warpstock.org with the information.
Hurry - you only have a week left! We've already received some bid intents, but we would like more. The Board of Directors will be more than happy to assist you in your bid application, so you have nothing to lose!
The 5th annual Warpstock conference will be held October 6-8, 2001, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is produced by Warpstock, Inc., a North Carolina non-profit corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock 2001 web site: http://www.warpstock.org or its mirror site: http://www.ibmforum.com/warpstock/

Indelible Blue Closes=Prism Dataworks Opens (from Bob St. John)
eCS customers who ordered from Indelible Blue should be aware that IB is
restructuring, creating new companies which will focus on specific lines
of business. For eCS customers, this means that their order fulfillment
will be done by a new company with some familiar faces.

The new company is Prism Dataworks. The familiar faces are Einstein, Katy Ansardi and Buck Bohac. Buck and Katy, who were the founders and principals of IB, are the founders and principals of Prism.
For eCS customers who ordered from IB, this means nothing more than your reseller has a new name. But the change will in no way effect your orders.

SCOUG statement clarification (from Joerg Skottke)
Please understand that the text used to promote the SCOUG meeting was prepared well in advance. Now, what does it mean? Well, it was intended to mean that we believe the SCOUG meeting will see the GA level code, the release candidate.
As Duane already pointed out, there is still a manufacturing process and distribution to endure. So there isn't much point in sitting out on the porch waiting for the postman, yet.
We are not rushing. We are being very deliberate. But, as Lou Gerstner used to say, we are acting with a sense of urgency. So, there is the balancing act of trying to be responsive, not wearing out anyone's patience, and not screwing when we are *this* close to having what we want to release.
I think it's fair to count the SCOUG meeting as part of the GA launch, because that's a pretty vague statement. It does not mean that the product is in distribution, however. But RSN.

Regards,
Bob St.John

Warpstock 2001 Call for Presentations (from luc.vanbogaert@pandora.be)
This year, as with the past four years, hundreds of OS/2 users from around the world will gather in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to talk about their favorite operating system. And every year, these hundreds of hungry minds cry out for more presentations.
The Warpstock 2001 Event Team and the Board of Directors of Warpstock, Inc. hereby formally puts out a call to adept OS/2 users, far and wide, to submit their proposals for presentations to be given at Warpstock 2001. If you have a specific knowledge in some of the below categories and you wish to share that in support of the OS/2 community, now is the time to step forward!
Presentations on any OS/2-related topic are more than welcome, regardless of the technical level. Topic categories include, but are not limited to, programming (Java, PM, device drivers, ...), software demonstrations (how-to's, tips and tricks), internet, networking, e-business and anything else of interest to OS/2 users. And remember, this year's conference is three days long, so be prepared to give your presentation more than once, if it's very popular.
Interested individuals should email the Toronto Event Team at kw2@sentex.net.
To ensure that the Warpstock staff have enough time to prepare, interested speakers should submit a title and abstract by September 1, 2001. Papers, if applicable, should be submitted by September 15, 2001.
For more information, visit http://www.warpstock.org/2001/presentations.html. There, you will find example presentations from previous years, templates in various formats for use in overheads, and a list of suggested deadlines.

Late news but good news: Warpstock Europe 2000 video (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
I'm very sorry I missed to announce this, but last year a few days before christmas the final video of Warpstock Europe 2000 was release. We had a vew changes, like new scenes and additional description of persons.
Now 5 month later the first usable DivX Player has been released "Warpmedia Player" (see readme for details) so I choosed to annouce this even I'm too late, because now you have the chance to see the video in full quality.
Note: Even the MPEG1 is A LOT better under WarpMedia then under the IBM CoDeC, so if you have the chance compare those and see what progress the OS/2 comunity just made (besides fullscreen video and TV display).

SecureOS/2 development will be continued (from Juergen Dankoweit)
The development of SecureOS, a security System for OS/2 and eCS, will be continued. Jürgen Dankoweit was able to find a distributor, who will also help him solving new problems during development, that forced him to stop development some time ago. Even an integration with XWorkplace is possible, but it is not yet defined, how this might look like.

Note: The website does not yet contain this news and still claims the development completely stopped.

AudioStation - The Conclusion (UPDATE) (from Christopher D. Hodges)
Well after over 70 emails from everyone here's what I've concluded:
O S / 2 N E E E E E E D S S O M E T H I NG L I K E T H IS!!!!!!!!
O S / 2 U S E R S W A N T T H I S P R O G R A M !!!!!!!!
I won't be able to respond to everyone but I just want to say thank you very, very much for your enthusiastic responses. Its heartening to see so much interest in this idea which is actually more than an idea because parts of it are already complete. Some of the biggest questions that was asked by you was:
  1. What is the maximum size audio file that can be handled? Well the way that I'm planning to implement this will allow for audio files as large as your hard drive can hold!!!!
  2. Will I be able to convert these audio files to MP3 automatically? Well I hadn't thought about doing that right away as there are other applications that handle the job adequately. But if the demand is overwhelming I'll put it on my list.
  3. Will it operate similar to CoolEdit? Well that is my plan. CoolEdit is a really great application and I'd like to use some of its
    concepts with AudioStation.
What I'm going to do is open up a new e-group on Yahoo's (formerly EGroup's) site so that anyone who is interested can join in and share in the creation of this tool. I'll be posting my project plan for everyone to see, criticize and maybe even commend. That way everyone knows where the product is going and when they can expect to see a release. How does that sound to you?
Thanks again,
Christopher Hodges
Author of MIDI Station Sequencer and the forthcoming AudioStation
P.S. Once again I apologize for not being able to respond to everyone's emails individually but each one is really appreciated.
What Does it Mean for MIDI Station Sequencer?
Some of you might be wondering if the creation of AudioStation means the end of MIDI Station Sequencer. Well let me put your mind at ease and let you know that this definitely does NOT mean the end of support for MSS. Actually most if not all of the features that will be available in AudioStation will also be available in MIDI Station Sequencer.

AudioStation - Anyone interested? (from Christopher D. Hodges)
I am considering writing an audio playback/recording and sequencing program. I'm proposing the following features:
  1. Audio playback with streaming from hard drive to handle large audio files
  2. Simultaneous playback of audio clips
  3. Audio recording with streaming for direct-to-hard-disk recording
  4. Full audio editing with graphical representation of the audioform (Cut,copy, paste etc....)
  5. Audio effects modules with the ability to have other developers write >custom plug-ins
  6. Audio sequencing: This would allow a user to take various audio samples and sequence them with the ability to save the sequences.
  7. Realtime looping and reversing of audio clips
All of these capabilities are available in MIDI Station Sequencer but as that program requires your soundcard drivers to support RTMIDI or use of the MPU401 driver it has become apparent that not many people are able to use that program. :>( All this is is a proposition. If there is no interest in this kind of program I won't waste my time but if there is enough interest generated I will spend the time on it. I see the end result of this program being what the next generation of a Ceres SoundStudio might have been. Any interest out there? I await your feedback.

CDDB has been closed (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
Here some information from the CD magic page:
Since Mar.1, 2001 the CDDB-server, which supplied the track data for the CD (title, artist etc.) has withdrawn the access authority for the CDMagic program. Instead of the expected track-data you get the message "CD not found on this server". We have sent a request to the webmaster at CDDB, and received an
explanation as follows:
The access protocol for the cd-database has changed. Which was formerly an open http-based protocol that could be programmed in any language (on any operating system) is now imbedded in a proprietary program module, i.e. a Windows-DLL.
They have ported this DLL to a Unix-lib but they refuse to do a port to OS/2. And - what is worse - they refuse to keep the old access protocol still open. This is the result of several requests and inquiries to the people at us.cddb.com, but they remain unimpressed. They don't want us OS/2-users. Everybody is invited to tell the people at Gracenote (owners of us.cddb.com) his point of view: licensing@gracenote.com. So all we can do is change our CDDB-URL to one of the free CDDB-servers, e.g. WWW.FREEDB.ORG. This server has quite a good supply of CD-titles and gets better every day (you can configure CDMagic to any server that you like). So don't spend even a thought on the people at us.cddb.com. Long live WWW.FREEDB.ORG!
