eComStation 2.0 GA to be Released for Warpstock Europe 2010 (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)

eComStation 2.0 GA

After a long delay, eComStation 2.0 GA will finally become reality. It will be released in time to be presented at the Warpstock Europe 2010 event which starts on May 14, 2010.

Mensys considers eComStation 2.0 to be the biggest overhaul of OS/2 so far. Together with a team of both hired and volunteer developers, we have extended the functionality, removed limitations, updated hardware support as far as possible, and resolved almost 1000 issues that had been reported since the release of eComStation 1.2R. The new eComStation 2.0 GA is the result of several years of combined efforts and investments.

Into the Future

Over several years Mensys has made considerable investments into the eComStation product and this persistance is rewarded. In spite of the general notion of OS/2 being an obsolete operating system, 2009 has been the most successful year in terms of sales to corporate customers so far, with the first quarter of 2010 showing a further increase in sales compared to 2009.

Mensys had always been positive about a much higher business usage of OS/2 remaining than generally assumed and is now proven right. While the majority of enterprise users will not advertise to have stayed with OS/2, it is still widely used in areas like, e.g., embedded systems, mission critical control systems, and running existing, large in-house applications. These users are and will be in need of an update that enables them to use current hardware and removes existing shortcomings: eComStation.

This enables Mensys to make increased re-investments and to make the commitment that we will continue to support and further develop the eComStation product.

While enterprise sales provide the financial base, Mensys also has always been well aware of the importance of the OS/2 and eComStation community. That is why we have been – and will be – closely involved with it, be it by funding the independent OS/2 and eComStation news system, supporting OS/2 and eComstation related projects, or helping to get another Warpstock event off the ground.

Warpstock Europe 2010

On behalf of the event team, Team OS/2 Region Trier e.V., and the Warpstock Europe Steering Group, we would like to invite you to come to Warpstock Europe 2010. The event will take place in Trier, Germany from May 14 to 16, 2010.

This is an excellent opportunity to get the latest information about developments in the OS/2 and eComStation world, get to know the people behind the projects, and exchange with other developers and users. Learn about topics ranging from the roadmap for future eComStation development over interoperability with other systems to matters of general interest like aspects of internet related law.

Please note that accomodation space in Trier is scarce due to parallel events, so be sure to make your reservation in time!

For more information see: http://http://www.warpstock.eu

Best regards,

Mensys BV and the eComStation Development Team

commTalk Forum Site Availability (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Until we can fix this, you can use the following work-around to access commtalk.org.

On OS/2, eCS:

You should have this line in your CONFIG.SYS file:

SET USE_HOSTS_FIRST=1

Add this line to your \MPTN\ETC\HOSTS file:

134.102.3.5 commtalk.org www.commtalk.org

Other OS:

With Windows, you find the file at C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and with Linux at /etc/host.

Some users reported the entry in HOSTS-list have to be like this:

134.102.3.5 www.commtalk.org #commtalk.org

(entries separated with tabs)

If you have any problems contact me via at:

http://mail(at)subsys.de

Sorry for the inconvenience, we are working on a solution.

Correction: Lzip v1.10 (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Elbert Pol has released version 1.10 of Lzip for OS/2 and eComStation. Lzip is a lossless data compressor based on the LZMA algorithm.

Change log:

* decoder.h: Input_buffer integrated in Range_decoder.
* main.cc: File specified with option \"-o\" is now created with mode 0666 if umask allows it, deleted if interrupted by user.
* main.cc: New constant \"o_binary\".
* main.cc: Dictionary size for options -2, -3, -4 and -8 has been changed to improve linearity of compressed sizes.
* lzip.h: Fixed warnings produced by over-optimization (-O3).
* Makefile.in: Added quotes to directory names.

Lzip is available at Hobbes.

No free slots at Warpstock Europe 2010 (from Eugene Gorbunoff)
WSE2007 -- 23 presentations,
WSE2008 -- 22 presentations,
WSE2009 -- 21 presentations,
Warpstock Europe 2010 = 14 presentations are listed -- http://www.warpstock.eu/en/agenda/presentations.html

eCo Software was going show 3 presentations at WSE2010:
* Discussion of eComStation future
* Discussion of new libraries for developers of eComStation applications
* Demonstration of new applications and utilities for eComStation

We apologize for the problems, no free slots for our presentations
* we are not going pay for the participation (the right to make the presentation,
not registration) in the conference
(this is the first case when you should pay for this in the history of Warpstock Europe)
* no free slots for OS/2-related reports (although 1/3 of presentations don\'t relate to OS/2 directly)

We are searching for other users which were rejected and can\'t
make the presentation to discuss the problem.

DevCon: new File Open Dialog - update your applications (from http://news.warpevents.eu/)

 * New library includes: WC_DIRTREE and WC_FILEVIEW. This PM-controls may be used in applications to select directory and/or file. All heavy operations are performed in separate threads. Call FOCInitialize() before usage of the controls.

* The control elements notify owner about state changes via WM_CONTROL message.

* The elements support d\’n\’d operation (as source).

* You can force change of directory, create/remove directories, rename files and directories using special messages. Moreover, the developers of applications can send messages to sort the contents of container, request list of selected files and directories.

* Both control elements can work in conjuction: the changes in directory tree influence on container with files and vice versa.

=== Replacement of System File Open Dialog ===

(under construction)

* The main goal of the project - replace system file open dialog with new one based on new PM controls.

* New dialog may be resized, users can change sorting, size of sub-windows. All parameters are saved and restored automatically.

* New dialog is fully compatible with old system dialog: if you are going call new FOC then use FOCFILEDLG structure (instead of FILEDLG), instead of functions WinFileDlg, WinDefFileDlgProc, WinFreeFileDlgList use: FOCFileDlg, FOCDefFileDlgProc and FOCFreeFileDlgList

=== Dialog for directory selection ===

* New dialog is based on WC_DIRTEE control. The interface is similar to the interface of FOC, API: FOCSelectDir, FOCDefSelectDirProc and FOCSELDIR structure.

http://ecomstation.ru/projects/developer/pics/foc02-20100303.png

 === Current plan of work ===

 * create WC_PREVIEW control, include it to file open dialog.

* full support of d\’n\’d.

* we should update external view one more time.

 === Join testing ===

 * Download FOC library and test samples: DevCon site, http://ecomstation.ru/projects/developer/

 Let\’s test:

* compatibility with different file systems

* browse directories with huge quantity of files

 Please send the results of testing via web-form: http://ecomstation.ru/support.php>
