FileStar/2 update (v2.10.03) (from Jim Read)
There is another FileStar/2 update (v2.10.03) available. This version contains a fix for the recent update (v2.10.02) that would fail on startup if there was no existing INI file plus a couple of other minor things that turned up in the interim. FileStar/2 is an easy to use PM file manager with features for real power users that want performance and flexibility.

LPTool version 2.11 (from Jan van Wijk)
I have released version 2.11 of the LPTool utility, wich has a few MAJOR fixes supporting directory synchronisation. The LPTS.CMD REXX macro now performs synchronisation of directories (or complete trees) in one or two directions based on date and time information on each side. There is also better support for configuring LPTool for different LPT port addresses (DEVICE command and LPTDD.CMD)
For those of you that don't know LPTool yet, its main purpose is file-transfer using a standard LapLink parallel cable connection (same cable as LapLink, MS Windows INTRSRV etc). It is being used mainly for synchronization of laptops that do not have network connectivity. It is not very fast (max 45 Kb/sec) but reliable... It also supports remote execution of commands over the cable, including redirection of output (similar to TCP/IP REXEC). At the moment, only an OS/2 version exists, so you cannot exchange files with a Windows or Linux machine. LPTool, just like my DFSee utility, is FREEWARE. There is a nice screen-shot with additional information there as well.

PSION FTP v0.94 (from Andy A. Porro)
v0.94: Fix some little bugs and one great bug. But it wasn't my. I use "iconv" - series of national languages support routines. But, in fact, IBM doesn't put in OS/2 some DLLs and tables (so, puts them only into Visual C++ package). Even Aurora doesn't have them. Now I know, why can't see any good Russian-translated programs :-( I include needed DLLs and several translation tables. You can place "ICONV" and "UCONVTAB" subdirectoryes on any directory from "LOCPATH" environment variable. Or, you can simply start program through command file.

Retrocade for OS/2 Alpha 1 (from Marty)
An Alpha version of Retrocade for OS/2 is available for download.

Retrocade is a multi-arcade game emulator, similar to MAME. It supports fewer games than MAME does (about 120 or so) but the emulation cores were designed for SPEED! The "business" part of the code was written almost entirely in assembly language and it shows!

In addition to the speed advantage over MAME, Retrocade offers a very attractive and futuristic GUI of its own, making its overall package very impressive. If you're a fan of MAME or a fan of old arcade games, give it a try!

The currently released version is *alpha* level code. Please be sure to read the ReadMe.OS2 file before running it for the first time. It currently has graphics and sound support, but lacks mouse and joystick support (which are coming soon). I'm releasing this version to get early feedback, so feel free to contact me about it.

Updates at PillarSoft (from Wayne Swanson)
With InfoZip's update to version 2.3 of their "Zip" utility on the 9th of this month, we have had to make a few adjustments to to accommodate the new version. Programs that have been updated are DeskTop Backup (DTB), WarpZip and the SFX Installer. The PillarSoft Suite distribution has also been refreshed with the updated programs for those of you that would like to download them that way.

DeskTop Backup is a point and click interface to building self-extracting recovery archives for your essential desktop information and configuration data. DTB will suggest files to archive (if you ask nicely) and allow the user to add his own listings by file, filter or directory. DTB also has a "Smart" AutoStart to keep your backups current. DTB is only $15 and more information can be found at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/dtb.html

The SFX Installer is the first widely distributed one file, self-extracting installer available for OS/2. Archive setups are point and click and the setups can be saved for future use. The SFX Installer's price point is $35 and information on it may be found at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/sfx.html

WarpZip is the latest in archive managment for OS/2. While zip files are the main point of attack for WarpZip, it will also find and open OS/2 "packed" files for viewing or extracting. The search mechanisms built into WarpZip for peering into zip files are second to none. WarpZip is just $29 and information on this terrific program is residing at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/warpzip.html

The PillarSoft Suite is a fine collection of native OS/2 tools and utilities from PillarSoft and is currently available under our introductory special pricing ($99). Further information on the PillarSoft Suite and what it includes is available on our website at: http://www.pillarsoft.net/suite.html

Zampa 1.0b is out now (from Eirik Overby)
The new release of Zampa, version 1.0b, contains a few new features that might make your life easier. Most important is the new "Firewall Wizard", which helps you set up your firewall the first time.
However, it's still beta (as always ;), so I need all the feedback I can get to perhaps one day get a "bug-free" version out.

For those who don't already know, Zampa is a utility to configure the built-in firewall in TCP/IP 4.1 and above. The firewall is not documented by IBM, except for the documentation for the AIX firewall that also contains some references to OS/2. This program makes setting it up and using it fast and easy.

KRFTech Windriver for OS/2 [beta] (from Martin ITurbide)
WinDriver is a tool to develop drivers for Windows 95/98/2000/CE,
Linux, Solaris and soon OS/2. Hi. I got this e-mail from Arie Tal at Krftech WinDriver.
The beta release has been delayed for about another week or two so...
In the mean while I suggest you download the regular Windows version and start writing your driver with it. The Windows version includes a powerful Wizard that enables you to detect and diagnose your hardware before you write a single line of code. The wizard will also automatically generate most of your driver code.
All you will have left to do is to copy the files the wizard generated to your OS/2 machine - replace the WinDriver kernel module with the appropriate one for OS/2 and compile. Your driver will now run on Windows 9x, 2000/NT and OS/2 (at least for the evaluation period).
Please feel free to contact me any time with any question you may have on WinDriver for OS/2 or any other OS.

new PM-Euro (from Carsten Mueller)
I'm proud to present you a new version of my OS/2 currency converter/calculator tool PM-Euro. This freeware PM tool allows you to easily convert currency values from one to another currency.

The new version 1.5 of PM-Euro got a new useful feature: it always shows the value in the new European currency EURO. For example, if you convert german marks (DEM) to US Dollars (USD), a third field will show you the value in Euro (EUR).

Get this latest version on my website and see some further new releases, such as v0.9 of the completely new "Download Manager" for OS/2.

Tyra/2 1.90 (from Oliver Poggensee)
Tyra/2 the Config.sys analyzer and editor is now available in version 1.90

The following bugs were fixed:
  • You can't correct the last error in the Analyze window. Tyra/2 will stop with an error message.
  • After pressing the "Change" button in the Analyzer an entry window pops up. This window doesn't show you the correct path, it shows always "TMP".
  • On the Call page the F1 key won't work correct.

New Features:
  • Added 70 new entries to the Config.sys Documentation.

Tyra/2 is shareware and you will have 31 days to test it. If you are an author of a piece of OS/2 Freeware you can get a key for free.

Future plans:
  • If I get enought information, I will enhance the Config.sys Documentation every month.
  • Somewhere in spring 2000 I will start developing version 2.0 of Tyra/2. I have plans for a lot of enhancements and new features, so the new version will not be availbe before summer 2000.

If you have any ideas for new features, enhancements or want have something changed in Tyra/2, than now is the best time to do it.
To help me with the config.sys documentation you can send me your config.sys file (maybe with a short list of your installed hardware and software). You have every month the chance to win here one of two Tyra/2 lifetime keys.

  • If you view the file info of a file created in Y2K, the month would be off by 1.
  • Could not read Windows BMP Version 5 (uncompressed or RLE).

Styler/2 fix 1.2.3 (from Alessandro Cantatore)
This update fixes problems related to:
  • restoring windows which were minimized while in rolled state
  • minimizing, restoring or maximizing command windows in rolled state
  • the unroll bitmap wrongly displayed as a titlebar button where the roll bitmap is appropriate (excluding the case where both the options Auto-unroll when getting focus and Auto-roll when losing focus are active)
  • a serious problems with window moving or resizing.
When a modal dialog is displayed while a window is moved or resized even if the modal dialog apparently gets the focus it doesn't get any mouse or keyboard message.
To reproduce the problem close all important documents you are editing, open an html file located in your disk with netscape (any version), then rename the file and try to resize the window: the window will capture all the mouse and keyboard events leaving no other solution than rebooting by Ctrl-Alt-Del.
With this fix the system should behave properly.

We have made a few changes at PillarSoft and have updated a few programs. Here is the skinny...

1) After the addition of the code for the PillarSoft Suite key we have had to update SFX to fix it's registration awareness. In the last build, the setup tool was not properly relaying registration information to the installer.

2) The Status Center (PSC) was updated to allow for some "Swappath" irregularities. The "irregularities" may be rare but are possibilities nonetheless that are allowed for now and are either taken care of internally or a graceful solution is employed.

3) We have also added a help file for WarPaint which previously had none.

Of course this means that the Pillarsoft Suite has been updated with all the changes as well. We won't go into a sales pitch this time (does that make this a bad press release?) but invite you to visit our website for more information, screenshots and fully functional copies of most of our software.

WarpIN 0.9.0 (from Ulrich Moeller)
WarpIN V0.9.0 has been released.

WarpIN is intended to become the new universal OS/2 installer. It has full system configuration (CONFIG.SYS, WPS classes, WPS objects), user exists and can fully undo all the changes to your system again.

This version is the successor to the Alpha #4 which was previously available on my home page. This is still a developer's release and not stable yet. However, many improvements have been made.

WarpIN is a Netlabs project. The source code is available on the Netlabs CVS archive. See www.netlabs.org/nosa for details. Even though WarpIN is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), it can be used for packaging commercial software also.

We have now created two mailing lists at: http://www.egroups.com

Subscribe to warpin-user (for WarpIN users, ie. those who wish to create WarpIN archives) and/or warpin-dev (for WarpIN developers) if you wish to follow discussions or get more information about creating archives.

File Commander v2.12 (from Brian Havard)
I have now released File Commander v2.12. The changes for this version over v2.11 are:
Minor Enhancements:
  • Support for ZIPs made by unix-heads who insist on putting a totally redundant ./ at the front of paths.
  • Editor: Undo/Redo is now persistent between edits of the same file, just like the cursor position is.
  • It's now possible to jump directly into an archive using stored path recall, directory history etc.

Bug Fixes
  • Archive reading would crash on archives with more than 32768 entries.
  • Found files list box wasn't being updated properly after deleting files from it with F8.
  • Using Alt-F9 while panels are turned off with Ctrl-O results in incorrect display when they are turned back on.
  • Win9x only: Fix calculation of total and free disk space on Info panel, was wrapping around at 4GB.
  • Directory Compare's 'Tag Older' option was tagging older or same date.

And before anyone asks, no this upgrade does not fix any Y2K problems (none have been reported).

Styler/2 version 1.2 (from Alessandro Cantatore)
Styler/2 version 1.2.0 is available for download.
Note:If you installed version 1.1 please check the exception pages of the titlebar, titlebar hiding and window rolling features: you can find some odd sentences in the list besides MPTS.EXE. This is due to a bug in the installation program of version 1.1 and shouldn't cause any real problem. In any case, please use the Remove button to get rid of them.
This version (1.2.0.* - smw120.zip) corrects the following problems and add the following new features:
  • The links for registering the program through the BMT Micro pages have been corrected.
  • I realized that the term Upgrade license was confusing for what has been so far its real purpose so I renamed it Advanced license. See the Licenses page for more details.
  • The next release will probably have all the features planned for this version and will probably be ready in February. The price will be slightly increased then. I expect to distribute a first release of version 2 in March.
  • The program now works correctly even if CADCMDR.EXE replaces PMSHELL.EXE in the PROTSHELL command of the CONFIG.SYS file.
  • Default values used by the program on its first installation have been corrected.
  • Now the shade style button in the Titlebar page of the preferences application shows the correct style.
  • Increased performances when serializing access to shared resources.
  • The clipboard enhancements in OS/2 and DOS command windows were causing system traps with some particular conditions. Now they should work correctly.
  • Now bitmaps and text used by SMARTWIN.DLL are no longer enclosed in the DLL itself, but are loaded dynamically and when the roll/unroll and hide/unhide titlebar are added to the system menu, the accelerator keys are displayed as for the default menu items.
  • Full window drag now works in warp 3 and has been improved for OS/2 and DOS command windows in warp 4 as well. This is a full implementation compared to the limited full window dragging of NPS WPS Enhancer. It works with the keyboard as well as with the mouse and works even when moving windows by dragging the window frame, when dragging rolled windows and when resizing as well as when moving the windows around.
  • Now the feature Auto-unroll windows vertically resized works correctly when used along with the Full window drag and size feature.
  • A divide by zero exception was occurring with particular styles of titlebar shades. Now it has been fixed.
  • A Push one step behind sub-option has been added to the Push behind all other windows feature in order to allow moving windows behind other windows step by step.
  • A Reduce folders height option has been added to the Titlebar hiding page.
  • An Include titlebar sub-option has been added to the Double click emulation option in the Mouse page.
  • Various other controls and a Windows keys page have been added to the preferences notebook. The corresponding features do not work at the moment.
Please check my home page for more details and screenshots.

DFSee 3.13 (from Jan van Wijk)
A new millennium, and a new version of the DFSee utility. I just released version 3.13 today, 02-01-2000.
The most important updates in the last few versions are:
  • DFSDOS fixes and better extended int-13 support (large disks)
  • HPFS UNDELETE speed improvements
  • NTFS updates to MFT related displays
  • NTFS UNDELETE and file-list support
  • FAT2OS cmd, make FAT bootable for OS2, Win-NT, IBMDOS or MSDOS
  • QUERY cmd, return any of 40 disk/partition related values in the DFSee exit-code (RC) to aid in automatic FDISK or recovery
  • Some enhancements to the user-interface, history and completion
For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems. Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS version exist. I would very much like to hear about experiences you have with DFSee, either positive or negative.
