new version of PPWIZARD (from Dennis Bareis)
PPWIZARD has gone through a "few" more revisions since my last update.
For those that don't as yet know, PPWIZARD is a generic preprocessor. Although most people use it only for HTML, it is also great for rexx code. You can now create header files contain code which you can if you wish conditionally generate (maybe you require different error handling for a particular common routine). It is generic in that it can be used to process any "text" files in any languages, if PPWIZARD's default processing gets in the way then there are many #Option's to change it.

mySQL/2 3.22.26a (from Timo Maier)
A new version of mySQL/2 is available. This is a quote from the developer Antony Curtis: I have compiled some new binaries for OS/2 based upon the 3.22.26a sources and they are now available for download:

The binaries are produced from a straight compile of the mysql-3.22.26a sources without additional modifications, compiled with the current pthread library and now uses the EMX GNU readline library (so editing in mysql client works) What these binaries are not: Fully stable - proven - tested. Ahh well... the same was true with my previous binary releases.;) Footnotes: There does appear to be an intermittent file locking problem on Aurora SMP - so use with caution. Otherwise, for other versions of OS/2, since there is little new code, this should work much like the previous version without some of the annoying bugz(tm). The full "native" compile may be impractical. WC10.6 cannot sensibly handle 64bit ints, WC11 is MIA, and I don't have enough time.

HPFSUtil 0.01 informational utility (from Mike Ruskai)
After a few months of poking around the structure of HPFS, I combined all of the testing programs I wrote into one program, which does the following:

  • Show system area usage

  • Show free space discrepancy

  • Show formatted HPFS SuperBlock and SpareBlock

  • Show bad sector count

  • Show drive dirty status

  • Set or toggle drive dirty status

  • Dump sectors to file

These seven things can be done one at a time, or during one program run (though doing all seven at once is of dubious utility). As one would expect, the standard disclaimer applies: Use this program at your own risk. It has been tested on every HPFS partition I have (nine partitions ranging from 130MB to 3GB), but that's it. It should work on any partition size that OS/2 and HPFS support, now and in the future. The program is being released into the public domain, with all of the source code.

GNOME/2 and E/2-News (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
As most of you know, there are a lot of GNU and OpenSource programs compiled under OS/2. Platon and Asbjoern are two of many who also do official coding, that means their source code is included in the official CVS.
Here is what they have compiled for us in the last weeks:
  • X-Chat
  • Gimp 1.1.11
  • GTK 1.2.6
  • GTK-See 0.5
  • LICQ 0.7 testcase
  • GNOME-Notepad 1.0.23
  • Enlightenment 0.16.2
I'll try to do more frequent announcements in the future.
Remember: These programms are NOT ported from Linux. Linux is just one of many platforms where these programs were compiled. GNU is NOT UNIX!

Odin Public Alpha 5 (from Achim Hasenmueller)
The Odin development team is proud to announce the availability of the Public Alpha 5 release (19991116). A lot has happened since the last public release in April 1998 so we encourage everyone interested in running the latest 32bit Windows applications on OS/2 to download this alpha release and check it out.
Note that this is still an alpha version meaning that it will most likely not be able to run your software or only partially run it but still it can be really useful!
You can find more information on the official Odin website. This page is currently being updated and there will be an application compatibility database very soon where you can report your experiences.
NOTE: We are still looking for talented developers to join this great open source freeware project! We know that we will make it possible to run virtually any Win32 program under OS/2 but the more developers we have, the sooner we will reach this goal!

New HOUSE/2 version (from Armin Schwarz)
The HOUSE/2 (Home Automation & Security for OS/2) series of programs have been updated to new versions and are available from the Warped Code Cellar.

The HOUSE/2 series of programs are home automation programs for X10 devices. HOUSE/2 is designed for the ActiveHome CM11A home automation controller and HOUSE/290 is for the older model CP290 controller.

HOUSE/2 and HOUSE/290 are now at the same feature level and provide uniform building blocks for home automation with X10 devices on the OS/2 platform.

Both programs have the following common features:
  • Fully REXX-enabled communications engines that can be controlled by external REXX scripts and are able to launch user programs from X10 event.
  • Designed to run over a home network. Control lights and appliances from any workstation on the network.
  • Makes web-based home control possible if run on a web server.
  • Full documentation of REXX interface included.
  • Samples include a "single button" start a dialer and e-mail client, get e-mail and disconnect, all from just pressing a single button on any X10 controller like a keychain remote, for example.
  • Additional graphical user interface available in the form of a Virtual Keychain remote. See this unique application at the Warped Code Cellar.

If you were wondering how the "single button" installation idea was realized at Warpstock '99, this is the program that did it.

HOUSE/2 and HOUSE/290 are shareware programs and registration is available through BMT Micro.

PMStripper 1.23 (from Don Hawkinson)
This PM utility strips HTML codes from Web pages, leaving only the text and optionally the URLs. While the layout of tables and lists is lost during stripping, data is sorted to separate lines for legibility.

Install PMStripper as the HTML source viewer in WebX instead of the OS/2 system editor E, and you can use the Ctrl+V keystroke combination to load the web page source directectly into PMStripper. This will make it easier to cut and paste information or URLs from web pages. It can also be installed as the document source viewer in Netscape. There are instructions for using PMStripper with Netscape 4.04 on my web page and included in the shareware distribution zip file.

Registered users of PMStripper will have access to two additional executable files that were compiled with the 486 and 586 compiler options. These versions will offer some performance improvement for users with 468 , Pentium, or equivalent CPUs.

New in PMStripper 1.23

Added 'Hard code word wrap' menu item under "File" on the menubar. This option adds CR-LF pairs to each line in the display window to make the current word wrap permanent. This should make it easier to print the stripped text.

PMStripper is shareware and costs $9.95 (US).

Registration covers all 1.xx releases of PMStripper. If you have registered PMStripper and have not received an email notice of this update, I need to update your email address in my mailing list. Send me a message with the email address used with your original registration and your new email address and I will update my mailing list.

New XMP & MikMod Module Players for OS/2 (from Kevin Langman)
Good news for people who listen to Module music:
  1. I have created a new version of MikModPM, an OS/2 GUI Module player that uses the MikMod library.
  2. I have ported the XMP Module player to OS/2 and there is a preview version available that seems to be fairly stable on my machine. XMP plays 47 different module types so now you can play nearly all the module files that were ever created!
  3. The MikMod Library has been updated and an OS/2 build has been created. If you are creating an OS/2 program that needs sound and music then you should take a look at the MikMod Library.

MAMERun beta 3 (from Jason Stefanovich)
I have just uploaded beta 3 of MAMERun to Hobbes.

Whats New Beta 3:
  • Hotlist now shows actual game names
  • Added extra options for vector games
  • Added option to play back recorded files
  • Added support for windowed modes
  • Added support for external commands
  • Cleaned up the interface
  • Removed the VPOBJ library
  • No longer need the prebuilt mamerun.ini and defaultmamerun.ini
  • Fixed misc. small bugs

What:

MAMERun is a FREEWARE PM front end for the DOS version of MAME
(Multi. Arcade Machine Emulator). A front end is a program that makes it easier for the user to interface with his application, which usually has a command line interface. MAME is a very popular emulator that allows you to run thousands of classic arcade games on your PC (if you own the ROMs). You can find the MAME homepage.

The Official (and very good) OS/2 PM port of MAME was done by Marty Amodeo.

Requirements:
  • OS/2
  • MAME for DOS (I used version .36 beta 8)
  • DOS Support installed
  • RexxUtil
  • joystick device driver ( for joystick support, download from hobbes or DDPAK)
  • ROMs (DO NOT ASK ME FOR, OR WHERE TO GET ROMS!!)

ODIN - daily snapshots (from Andreas Linde)
The above URL contains binary snapshots which are released on a daily basis. This is a pre-alpha version and is a work-in-progress. OS2.org setup a mirror for the daily updates. Please use this location instead of the Netlabs-URL, because of the small bandwith of the Netlabs server: ftp://ftp.os2.org/odin/

WarpNote 1.87 (from Uwe Schlenther)
Tired of those yellow sticky notes that won't stick on your monitor? Here come the sticky notes that remain where you put them: On your OS/2 desktop. WarpNote gives you easy access to little yellow windows where you can note down everything you want. The program is simple and easy to use and consumes as little memory as possible. Each and any feature can be configured and adjusted to the user's needs. Extensive scripting capabilities give you unlimited possibilities (a birthday-reminder is included as an example script). A Blowfish encryption interface ensures that private data is stored in a secure way.

WarpNote is an ideal desktop companion, a fire-and-forget solution to keep all sorts of information - e.g. your shopping list or even confidential information like banking data, passwords or PIN numbers.

New in this Release:
  • Changed Background color of default font control in color settings dialog.
  • Fixed order of main windows which was changed by introducing ControlCenter.
  • Improved Print dialog.
  • Introduced possibility to switch scroll bars on and of on each note.
  • Introduced workaround for PM not changing focus when Alt-F11 is pressed. This caused notes list not being refreshed.
  • "ControlCenter floats on top now functional. (Thanks to Lou)
  • Rearranged a few things to improve startup speed and EXE size.

Larsen Commander (from Leif-Erik Larsen)
A new version of the Larsen Commander has been released. This is version 0.99.8, which is expected to be the last beta before version 1.0.

Larsen Commander is a fine 32-Bit GUI File Manager for OS/2 Warp that has a "look and feel" that is much like the famous Norton Commander. The most notable difference is that Larsen Commander is pure GUI and still has a built in command line and a scrollable console monitor. Powerful, nice and snappy.

Audio-CD-Creator V0.34 (from Chris Wohlgemuth)
There's a new release of Audio/Data-CD-Creator avaiable.

Audio/Data-CD-Creator is a set of WPS-classes working as a front-end for CDRecord/2 (a free CD recording program). Create your single/multisession data CDs and audio CDs (only TAO supported) entirely via drag and drop. This front-end is of course fully WPS aware and fits seemlessly into your system. Full source code is provided.

New with this version:
  • Allow spaces in audio folder names
  • Progress bar for audio CD writing
  • Folder backgrounds (Thanks to Arjen Meijer)
  • Different cdrecord options for audio and data folders
  • Fixed Bug: Audio-CD-C lost setting for tracknumbers
  • Code cleanups and preparation for NLS
  • Removed member function cwLoadIniValues()

Enlightenment and Xfree86/2 news (from Anthony Dolan)
I just noticed at the Enlightenment web site that the newest release has specifically had modifications to make it compile and run on Xfree86/2 and advertises such. Enlightenment is a window manager (changes the look and feel) for most common *nix systems running Xfree86, and now apparently OS/2 also.

DeskTop Backup 1.2 (from psoft@tech-center.com)
DeskTop Backup (DTB) has been updated to version 1.2

WHAT'S NEW?

DTB now searches the chosen drive for ALL Desktops when using the "Get suggested" button to get file listings. We have also rearranged the controls in the "AutoStart" settings page and have added the ability to add files by filter. Wildcards are supported when searching by filter. Examples: C:\TextFiles\*.TXT or C:\T*.E?E /S

ABOUT DTB

DeskTop Backup is a simple tool that works with InfoZip's Zip and Unzipsfx to build a self-extracting zipfile containing your essential desktop and other
configuration information. There is no magic or slight of hand concerning it's use and one can do the same work from the command line along with the InfoZip utilitities. DeskTop Backup merely makes it a bit more automated and will also help you decide what files may be important to archive.

DTB will also help find and list important files on your drive so you are able to do a more detailed backup than the standard OS/2 system desktop archive will give you.

You may add to the "suggested" file listings or do a separate setup of your own important files and directories as well. Such as? Well... maybe you want to do an archive of business correspondance or maybe back up a development directory every so often. You can do them on demand or automatically as well.

Saving several distinctive backup setups to be performed on demand or automatically is easily handled by DTB. You can also scan the chosen drive for existence of suggested files whenever you feel an update of the information is needed. (new files important to your desktop may have appeared since the last setup)

As usual, we try to stay away from cryptic scripts etc so "AutoStart" backups are simple point and click setups that update your situation automatically with just a mouse click. You can also save multiple archive setups and recall them at will as well as setting the scheduler to run automatically at startup to archive by "days between archives" or "day of the week".
