Updated INIServe and Weasel setup (from Peter Moylan)
Two new releases today. As usual, you can fetch them from my web site.
  1. Version 0.3 of INIServe. Almost identical to version 0.2, but with a minor fix to the way "not found" entries are handled.
  2. A new version of the PM setup utility for Weasel. (Look for wsetup.zip) The special feature of this one is that it can, with the help of INIServe, be used to set up Weasel (e.g. by adding new users) from a remote site. It"s still a lot slower than the text-mode Setup. One of these days I"ll probably re-code it in a better language to make it faster (this version is done in REXX), but that doesn"t have a high priority for the moment.

new mpg123 DLL 1.08 (from Samuel Audet)
What"s new!
  • Fixed floating point exception crashes. Let me know if you can still reproduce any SYS3183.
  • Fixed problem with MP3 EQ range calculation with low frequency overflowing table and screwing up memory when MPEG 2.5 Layer III files were played.
  • Added support for virtual hostnames in HTTP123.DLL
  • In HTTP123.DLL, fixed seeking (and also loading) problems and glitches, especially with slow media (like CD-ROMs) and big read buffers. But be wise, Read Ahead buffering produces an unnecessary overhead on fast media.
  • Added mp3->wav decoder. Command line utility only for now.
  • For developers, added a play status semaphore. It can be used to sleep instead of DosSleep() with the advantage of knowing exactly when the player stops.

Desktop On-Call (from tsipple@us.ibm.com)
How would you like to remotely control your PC or server using almost any web browser?

IBM"s got just the handy little utility for you: Desktop On-Call. And you can download it NOW!

Desktop On-Call can be installed on OS/2 Warp, Warp Server, WorkSpace On-Demand Manager, or Windows PCs. Then, using any Java-enabled web browser, simply "point" to your PC, type in your ID and password (for security), then go ahead and control the desktop. Copy a file from your PC to your web client if you like. It"s the next best thing to being there!

Desktop On-Call offers some great benefits:
  • access your office system from home;
  • manage your servers securely through a dial-up connection;
  • help users remotely from any web client on the network;
  • "run" OS/2 Warp applications on Windows systems or vice-versa.
Download Desktop On-Call now by visiting IBM Direct. Search for "Desktop On-Call" (it"s IBM part number 31L2729). The cost is only US $39.95 retail. You won"t have long to wait -- the download is only about 2 MB. What a great value!

INIServe update (from Peter Moylan)
The second release of INIServe is now obtainable.

The differences between this and the first release are:
  • I"ve finished the missing parts of the manual
  • added a "delete" command
  • tidied up a few loose ends.
Unless anyone finds bugs, I"ll call this the final release and upload it to Hobbes at some later stage. That will leave me free to put more effort into Weasel, which is my next priority.

X-it 2.6 release (from Michael Shillingford)
Product Description:

X-it is a full-featured OS/2 desktop enhancer - single click to many common actions that normally take a large number of mouse movements and clicking. Adds user defined titlebar buttons to all windows, such as close, rollup, open parent folder, and many more, including running any program. Redefine all 3 mouse buttons or Win95 keys to perform shortcuts. Snap mouse to default button, automenu selection, titlebar clock, and much more.

What"s New:
  • Added quick copy/paste for Dos windows - simply drag mouse button 1 to begin marking text in a Dos command line window. Double click button 1 to paste.
  • Mouse button 1 configuration (with shift/ctrl/alt combos).
  • Added snap mouse to window - snaps either to the default button, or center of the window if no buttons. Options to snap to button windows only and animation.
  • Added auto menu selection when mouse moved over menu item.
  • Option to autoselect menu when over any of the 6 sections/columns of a menu item.
  • Added disable/enable NumLock and ScrollLock keys. Use Shift key to override. Also allows you to force NumLock on or off on bootup.
  • On the fly toggles for X-it"s mouse/keyboard actions. Toggles appear in X-it"s popup menu (right click over an X-it titlebar button, or in X-it"s task list).
  • Fix for X-it"s Edit popup menu occuring when there is no static text to copy. This fixes right mouse button conflict with PMView 2.x (bug occurs only if static copy is enabled in X-it"s menu options).
  • Shift rolldown now only rolls down those windows that were rolled up via shift rollup. That is, windows already rolled up are left alone.

DTB - DeskTop Backup for OS/2 (from Wayne Swanson)
DeskTop Backup (DTB) has just been updated with Automated backups and redundacy storage.

DeskTop Backup is a simple tool that works with InfoZip"s Zip (v2.2) and Unzipsfx to build a self-extracting zipfile containing your essential desktop and other configuration information. There is no magic or slight of hand concerning it"s use and one can do the same work from the command line along with the InfoZip utilitities. DeskTop Backup merely makes it a bit more automated and will also help you decide what files may be important to archive.

DTB will also help find and list important files on your drive so you are able to do a more detailed backup than the standard OS/2 system desktop archive will give you.

You may add to the "suggested" file listings or do a separate setup of your own important files and directories as well. Such as? Well... maybe you want to do an archive of business correspondance or maybe back up a development directory every so often. You can do them on demand or automatically as well.

Saving several distinctive backup setups to be performed on demand or automatically is easily handled by DTB. You can also scan the chosen drive for existence of suggested files whenever you feel an update of the information is needed. (new files important to your desktop may have appeared since the last setup)

As usual, we try to stay away from cryptic scripts etc so "AutoStart" backups are simple point and click setups that update your situation automatically with just a mouse click. You can also save multiple archive setups and recall them at will as well as setting the scheduler to run automatically at startup to archive by "days between archives" or "day of the week".

INI editor for remote system management (from Peter Moylan)
For some time now there has been a demand for "remote management" versions of the FtpServer and Weasel setup programs. I am now releasing a new freeware product called INIServe that goes part way towards this goal; it will let you edit any INI file on the remote machine.
Specialised versions for FtpServer and Weasel will probably follow in the long run, though I haven"t yet decided where that should go on my priority list.

This is a first version that is incomplete in a couple of respects, but it works "as is". I"ll follow up soon with a version that includes the missing documentation, etc. Meanwhile, I"ll be interested in any feedback that tells me what sort of demand there is for this sort of thing.

This will continue to be free. I want to keep it available for other software authors who could use it as a base for their own configuration utilities.

PM VNC Viewer update [beta 0.07] (from Akira Hatakeyama)
Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.

I have released a new version (beta 0.07) of VNC viewer for OS/2 PM. I added some requested features and fixed some problems.

New Features:

Appended "-passwd password-file" option. If VNC viewer can access password file of the VNC server, this option specifies the use of the password from given file, not from password dialog. If you use this viewer with Xvnc server for OS/2, this option gives no passwd dailog to connect to local Xvnc server.

Appended "-keymap keymap-file" option. Keymap-file defines maps between scan key code and VNC"s key code (X"s keysymdef). With this mapping, you can send different key code for Right/Left Shift/Control keys, or keypad keys usually not distinguished. Also, you can send NLS keys with this mapping.

Fixes:

When keyboard focus changed, VNC viewer adjusts Shift, Ctrl, Alt state to current state. This fixes a problem CTRL stay pressed when CTRL-ESC to change active window. But this fix sends another key event to the remote desktop, and this may cause problems on some remote applications.

Also there is a problem on mouse button release. If you hold down a mouse button and release it outside window, then no mouse release was send to remote desktop, and remote application think mouse button is still pressed. Now the viewer captures mouse on button down and watches button release.

SFX Installer (from Wayne Swanson)
The SFX Installer has been released for general usage.

The SFX Installer offers the first one file archive/installation tool widely available on the OS/2 platform. It marries the installation tool for your software and it"s own setup tools into one friendly package for point and click installation setups that are personalized for your software. SFX allows you to build an archive in standard or self-extracting format, with or without the installer.

There are no cryptic scripts to learn to write other than any setupstrings you need to place folders and icons on the desktop. The installation setup tool allows you to point and click a complete setup. When you are satisfied with how the archive should be setup you can save all the information and recall it when needed. SFX will save and retrieve as many setups as you have disk space for and will help the author of multiple programs to keep them organized. It can also be used as a general zip file distribution builder as well.

The SFX Installer includes several novel details for the software distributer including:
  1. Dll and help file placement (and tracking) into existing LIBPATH and SET HELP directories so your user may avoid adding to these paths and also avoid rebooting before usage.
  2. An uninstallation script is written at install time specific to the users installation that will, track all files your program has installed and remove any WPS objects created at installation time. This uninstall script can be modified if needed via a plugin.
  3. Authors can make use of Plugin scripts to overcome any installation limitations that your installations need to perform. (examples included)
Although the installer is distributed as shareware, we invite freeware authors to use the installer free of charge as a small token of appreciation for their selfless work. Please read the license for more details.

Tink Bar for Lotus Word Pro (from Sander Nyman)
Tink Bar for Lotus Word Pro is an EXCELLENT utility which adds a Smart Icon bar containing a variety of added functionality, and ease of use to Word Pro.
Here are some of those features.
  • Send a file to your fax printer (many versions of WinFax and FaxWorks are supported).
  • Print a file immediately, without stopping at the print dialog box.
  • Print only certain pages of a file quickly, those you choose.
  • Insert Curly Quotes. (not all quotes are supported in the TL)
  • Change the page color to an easy view vanilla color.
  • Change the page color back to white or a currently used SmartMaster"s color for printing.
  • Insert the Endash, Emdash, Ellipsis (T), Legal Section Mark, Copyrite, Trademark, or Registered Symbols
  • Insert an empty checkbox, an "x"d" checkbox, a checked checkbox (T)
  • Hop through a document from beginning to end, seeking (one at a time) and deleting frames. Nice for HTML documents.
  • Switch between different Envelope SmartMasters. (two in TL and four in T)
  • Switch back to the Lotus default envelope. (T)
  • Insert varying flavors of footnotes and endnotes. (T)
  • Copy the Endnotes division to a separate file. (T)
  • Provide a SmartMaster for endnotes that are superscripted instead of bracketed. (T)
  • Extra icons to create more specialized envelopes and have them handy for use.
  • Footnote and Endnote icons.
Note: Be sure to go to the BOTTOM of the Tink Bar page under the "Special note for OS/2 Warp users" section, and click on the "available" link to download the OS/2 installer version of Tink Bar.

Also note that Tink Bar is not a brand new product, although I find that many Lotus Word Pro users are unaware of it. My reason for posting this information, is that many people who had the Tink Bar page bookmarked in Netscape may have lost track of Tink"s web site when the site was changed.

Tink"s pages also include some VERY useful information, and links for Lotus Smart Suite users. Also check out the Fink Bar. This is yet another bar that adds functions to Word Pro.
