Software-Choice not free of charge any more (from bernd hohmann)
In the IBM U.S. Announcement Letter 299-276 (dated 09/28/1999) IBM says, that the complete Software Choice will not be free of charge beginning at 01/01/2000 any more.
That means, that Java v2 and the next Netscape will not be free too, the "Device Driver Pack" does not seem to be affected from this decision.

WarpIN CVS (from Christoph Vogelbusch)
I'm from the OS/2 Starter Kit and I'm proud to announce, that Netlabs has opened after hard work of Ulrich Moeller a CVS archive for WarpIN.
Don't wonder, that I announce this, but WarpIN is very important for the OSK as the OSK's packages are all for WarpIN.
Currently WarpIN is a OpenSource PM-Installer/Uninstaller, that can also install quietly through environment variables. But I hope it will also be the OS/2 packagemanagent system like RPM and DEP is for Linux.
So if your interesteted take a look inside.

Attendance Exceeds Estimates, Warp Expo West Mobbed (from Peter Skye)
Warp Expo West, the international "Warpfest Of OS/2 Excitement" in sunny California, held court to throngs of happy OS/2 revelers on Saturday as it filled lecture halls, exhibit areas and hallways with an enthusiasm unseen in recent memory. The four lecture halls were often at capacity, the exhibitor area often mobbed.

"We had 20% more guests than anticipated," said Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West. "We obviously underestimated the industry's interest in OS/2 and the number of people who would travel long distances to attend a major OS/2 function."

International guests mingled with local attendees as lecture after lecture poured forth from the auditoriums and seminar rooms.

The roundtable with Peter Coffee of PC Week, Esther Schindler of Sm@rt Reseller and Alan Zeichick of Camden Associates had people talking for the rest of the day, discussing the panelist's comments and sharing their own personal insights.

Jerry Rash began the first of his four OS/2 multimedia lecture periods faced with an overflow crowd. Extra chairs were brought in and the audience spilled out through the doors and into the hallway, listening to his every word and vying for an occasional glimpse of the screen.

When asked during a morning pause how the show was doing for bringing in new business, Jim Williams of IBM replied "We've already made several good contacts. Warp Expo West is about the best show we've been to."

And so it went. Guests poured in from all over the U.S. and from overseas as well, taking in this massive gathering of OS/2 technology, products and information.

Lecturers held impromptu discussions in the hallways. The Warped Jeopardy! game show presentation from Sundial Systems was a combined multimedia extravaganza and stage show delight. Live video feeds were sent around the world over Internet connections. Webfoot, The Duck made an appearance.

Special exhibits lined the walls. Vendor100 was spectacular to watch as WiseManager from Serenity Systems instantly brought up icon after icon of Vendor100 software on every machine during the network bootup. Commercialgrade overhead projectors threw large images onto the auditorium screens. The OS/2 space game Stellar Frontier ran on a bank of machines.

"We've accomplished what we set out to do," continued Rollin White, "and we've again brought OS/2 knowledge and products to the community, to both current users and new users, so that OS/2 will continue to be recognized for what it is - the best desktop operating system in the world today."

Warp Expo West was held last Saturday, September 18, in
sunny Southern California.

Admission was free.

More generic OS/2 news (from anonymous)
Some news we got from the Warp Expo West meeting:

OS/2 Sales Up By 125%!
News out of Warp Expo West: Sales of all types of OS/2 --including the Warp 4 client-- are up over last year by at least 125%. This information was provided by a real IBM official and it gives, at last, some credibility to Esther's recent article on IBM's surprise at how well OS/2 is doing.

Lotus To Release Update v1.5!
An IBM insider says Lotus will release SmartSuite version 1.5 by the end of this year. Its main improvement will be in Lotus 123 which is currently at the same level of its Windows product. Version 1.5 will put OS/2's Lotus 123 above their Windows product. This is another sign that proves OS/2 is very much alive and kicking butt.

What's The Truth Behind 'The Meeting'?
Today is the first day of Warp Expo West and our reporters are sending in a great many news stories. First, let's start with the very much publicized meeting Brad Wardell claims to have taken place yesterday which is getting much airplay today.

According to an IBM official attending Warp Expo West, no meeting took place yesterday on the future status of OS/2. He should know, he sits on the committee itself. On top of this he said IBM has ruled no third party entity out of the running to offer a third party release of Warp 5.

Top Secret: FP12 Is OS/2 Most Stable Update
Although FP12 has not been released publicly (yet) those who have been able to get/install it say it makes their systems the most stable OS/2 systems to date. FP12 corrects some 50 long-standing bugs (APARS). FP12 is expected for public release by October 1.

Netlabs statement about the future of OS/2 (from Adrian Gschwend)
We all heard it, Stardock is not allowed to release a new OS/2 client. I and many other OS/2 users are very disapointed about this.

As the webmaster of OS/2 Netlabs I would like to share my statement about the future of OS/2. In fact I want to make sure that you don't delete your OS/2 partition. Read it and be prepaired for more!

NO MORE OS/2 Client !!!! (from Brad Wardell)
In 1998, Stardock took the position that if IBM had no current or projected plans for a new fat OS/2 client, that it was in the interests of OS/2 users and the computing community in general that a third-party should work with IBM to license OS/2 technology on an OEM basis and make a new client available.

To that end, late last year, Stardock prepared a business plan and opened negotiations with IBM. The wheels of bureacracy grind slowly, but eventually it was up to IBM (executive level) to make the ultimate call on proceeding.

For the past 6 months, Stardock and IBM have been working closely together in hammering out the details of an OS/2 client. Everything from potential names down to which minute components would or would not be included. These meetings included multiple in-person meetings with IBM staff and executives here at Stardock's office complex in Livonia Michigan.

With an agreement in principle in place, the last major hurdle was this week in which the IBMers in favor of our proposal (mostly in Austin) presented their case to IBM as a whole.

The call has been made -- there will be no new client from Stardock and IBM has indicated that they have no plans for an OS/2-based client of their own.

Though IBM indicated Stardock had the strongest proposal, they have decided that it is currently not in IBM's or their customer's interests to license any current OS/2 technology on an OEM-basis.

There was never any discord between IBM and Stardock over financials, technical viability, target market, or the like. IBM has simply finally made the decision that a new OS/2 client would be in conflict with their strategic directions.

Stardock would like to extend a special thanks to all the IBMers (and in particular Ken Christopher and Timothy Sipples) who went above and beyond the call in working with us and going to bat inside IBM. Remember when you meet folks like them, who are and have been intimately involved with OS/2, that their hands may be just as tied as yours when the IBM Corporation as a whole sets policy.

Everything that could be done was done.

Brad

Business Money Favors OS/2, Heads For Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
A large number of businessmen, entrepreneurs and members of the financial community will attend Warp Expo West on Saturday.

"They like the return on investment that OS/2 gives them," says Carla Hanzlik, Editor of the monthly publication OS/2 For You. "They like the low cost of ownership, the low maintenance, the ability to run on older hardware, the robust networking, the Y2K readiness. They look at other solutions, they compare them point-by-point, and they choose OS/2."

The most popular sessions among the business community are the following, according to Hanzlik.

"IBM: The New Strategy To Control The Worldwide Desktop" discussion roundtable with Peter Coffee of PC Week, Esther Schindler of Sm@rt Reseller, and Alan Zeichick of Camden Associates. "This open debate will give insight to the direction that IBM will take in the future," says Hanzlik, "and will show how IBM is becoming extremely aggressive once again."

"Warp Server for e-Business and WorkSpace On-Demand" by Steven King, Senior Manager of IBM's Network Computing Software Division. "The various servers required by business are covered in this session," says Hanzlik, "as well as the considerations for decision planning."

"Web Server Performance and Scalability" by Robert Chapman of the Institute Of Advanced Development Strategies. Hanzlik has noticed much interest in this seminar, "because managers and business owners need to know up front what the problems are that their technical staff will face."

"Warpicity: An Overview and Update" by Lynn Maxson. "The expense of developing software is huge," points out Hanzlik, "and this proposal could greatly change the model of creating unique applications."

"Services Offerings for the OS/2 Platforms" by Steven King of IBM. "This is a fundamental checklist of the areas that must be included in a business plan," notes Hanzlik, "and covers both the range of projects and the reasons they are important to a business decision-maker."

"WorkSpace On-Demand, Remote Client Connection" by Dennis Sposato of IBM's Network Computing Software Division. "A very powerful technology which incorporates both legacy and new hardware into a fully-functioning business network," Hanzlik states.

"Warped Jeopardy!" hosted by Sundial Systems. "We've found this to be an extremely popular selection with business people, which matches the interest we've seen in all other groups," says Hanzlik.

Hanzlik has been in the computer industry for 15 years, and Editor of OS/2 For You for six. She notes that there is prime interest in seeing specific exhibitors as well.

"IBM will be showing OS/2 Warp Server For e-Business and WorkSpace On-Demand, and Serenity Systems will show their WiseManager product," says Hanzlik. "These are very cost-effective solutions for any business environment."

"Phoenix Software and Sundial Systems have a number of applications for business users," continues Hanzlik, "including very sophisticated database and spreadsheet software which is customizable for specific business projects."

"We've also had many inquiries about OS/2 preinstallers, and Demand Systems is one of our exhibitors who will build pre-loaded OS/2 machines that can simply be set on a desktop and turned on. In a business environment this is certainly less expensive than spending valuable time fiddling with the install software, the drivers and the configuration."

"Business telephone needs are covered by Active Voice and Auto VoiceSystems," notes Hanzlik. "Auto-attendant, voice mail, fax, all these services are represented here."

"And we also have the Institute Of Advanced Development Strategies, who will cover project scheduling technology and mainframe utilization."

Cost-effective business solutions are covered at Warp Expo West!

Warp Expo West is free, free, free. The show will be held on September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California.

One Hundred Vendor100's And Exhibitors At Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
One hundred OS/2 vendors, products and specialists are now a part of Warp Expo West.

"Guests will see a lot of OS/2 products," says Chairman Rollin White. "We topped 100 last week and we're still adding new ones."

There's something new this year. A network of machines will constantly make the software available for guests to try. Two servers and a number of clients will give every guest a chance to try all the software they want, see how it works, how it feels, and what it can do. Every Vendor100 program will be available on every machine. There will even be online ordering.

"Vendor100 is clearly a better way to demonstrate
software," continues White. "Instead of wandering the show aisles and searching for the software you need, it's all on one machine in front of you. You can try each application, switch back and forth between them to compare features, even check the vendor web sites to see what extra information is online."

The network itself runs OS/2 WiseManager, from Serenity Systems. "You can buy that too," smiles Kim Cheung, Executive Director for Serenity. Cheung personally supervised the installation of all software. WiseManager allows software to reside on one server and be used anywhere on the network, with individual profiles for each user. The user machines don't even need hard drives; they can boot directly from the network and all files are kept on the server.

For the software you need and the systems that run it, come to Warp Expo West!

Warp Expo West is free, free, free. The show will be held on September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California.

Live Video Internet Feed From Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
Warp Expo West announces something very special - a live video feed over the Internet from the show floor.

You'll be able to watch the video on your Netscape browser.

The continuous broadcasts will begin when Warp Expo West opens it doors on Saturday.

At this time we aren't exactly sure how many channels of video we will deliver. The system itself can supply four different channels and we hope to have all four up and running. There are multiple T1 lines in place to deliver these four video channels to the Internet backbone.

There are some technical issues that still need to be worked out. The audio feed is one we're still working on, and fine tuning the HTML code for your Netscape browser is another.

Still, the video system worked fine in tests on both Saturday and Sunday and we're confident we can deliver live video to you on "show day" this coming Saturday. There will be a special link on the Warp Expo West web pages and you won't need anything but your Netscape browser.

This is not a "webcam". This is full-motion video, just like you see on your television.

Even with the multiple T1 lines there are some bandwidth issues and we may have to reduce the image size, increase the compression level or restrict the number of simultaneous users depending on how many people choose to "tune in". A lot depends on the average bandwidth of viewers like yourself, since cable modems and DSL lines will load our video system more than 56K modems. Consider this a part of OS/2 history, as we take a "first shot" at sending full-motion video to your computer screen.

The idea for the live video feed belongs to Tim Katz of Demand Systems. (Demand Systems is an OS/2 preinstaller and an exhibitor at Warp Expo West.)

Tim Katz did the engineering design work, lined up the equipment and first tested the fully completed system on the Demand Systems network last Saturday. He and Steve Schiffman, the Network and Facilities Director for Warp Expo West, then tested the system at the show site on Sunday.

There was plenty of preparation for the final test. "I had to ensure that our supplier network was capable of supplying the bandwidth required," said Schiffman, "and that meant checking on each segment of the uplink. We'll have cameras in the lecture rooms and in the exhibitor area, and we'll supply a combination of live video feeds and repeat broadcasts of the most popular lectures."

Tim Katz had to work out some last-minute connections and spent part of the testing time working on the HTML. "Netscape supports live video, but Internet Explorer requires a special add-on which we won't support," said Katz. "The Netscape HTML is coded in a certain way and it took a bit of experimentation to get it right."

And Tim McCoy, owner of Demand Systems and present during the tests, was very pleased. "We like to come up with a solution no matter what the problem, and live video on the Internet is in everyone's future for seminars, trade shows, even family events such as weddings and any gathering of people. It's cost effective."

Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West, said that "watching live video over the Internet is a great demonstration of why OS/2 is a leading technology platform."

And Terry Warren, President of The Southern California OS/2 User Group (SCOUG), the show's sponsoring organization, said "This is the technology of the future and we're pleased that SCOUG can bring this new benefit to OS/2 users via Warp Expo West."

Warp Expo West is free, free, free. The show will be held on September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California.

Video Editing On OS/2 Lecture At Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
You'll learn how to set up your own OS/2-based video editing system, so you can splice together movies, tv shows and anything else, when you're a part of Warp Expo West.

Multimedia expert Jerry Rash will have his own video editing system on-site for you to inspect. And in an extended multi-period session of lectures and interactive demonstrations, you will learn how to easily and inexpensively add video editing capabilities to your own OS/2 machine.

Jerry will show movies and other video clips, and will explain the proper techniques for video capture using OS/2's native VideoIN and the alternate program Main Actor. You'll watch as he goes through the editing process, connecting different video scenes together using Main Actor's splicing functions. You'll learn how to do this on your own business and home OS/2 machines.

Jerry's lecture will cover the video cards you can use for capturing from camera or vcr including the extensive testing he's done on many cards, the chipsets that VideoIN supports and the one video capture chipset that seems to work best, the tricks for avoiding dropped frames, and the methods of successfully converting between the many various video formats including AVI, Indio, Ultimotion and the proprietary Microsoft ASF format. You'll watch Jerry as he does video editing on-screen, connecting scenes together in true Hollywood fashion. You'll find out which Fixpaks to apply for best performance and which new Fixpaks to avoid.

And during the additional interactive time period you'll get a chance to actually try Jerry's video editing system yourself.

Video editing on your own machine is now possible and it's inexpensive. You'll learn how to do this when you attend Warp Expo West!

Connect OS/2 And Linux At Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
You'll see OS/2 and Linux running seamlessly together, connected on the same network and using each other's files when you join us at Warp Expo West.

When you need to add to your network and don't want to dedicate an entire OS/2 machine, Linux can come in handy. "It's a decent file and printer server for OS/2 and other desktop systems," says Hugh Daschbach, one of the two OS/2-Linux lecturers, "and it provides a rock solid server platform for mail, news, or web service."

In this extensive seminar you'll be shown how to install Linux as a second operating system on an OS/2 machine, how to access HPFS partitions with Linux and the new HPFS functionality expected in Linux 2.4, running Samba to provide LAN Manager networking services for file and printer sharing, accessing Linux files from the OS/2 client, using Linux as the server, the Linux configuration screens for setting up your networking capabilities, disk partitioning considerations when using Linux and Linux with OS/2, dual booting with LILO, implementing the X Window system, and the X Window software packages available.

Hugh Daschbach and Michael Elliott are both seasoned OS/2 users, and both are also members of the Unix Users Association of Southern California. Together they will showcase the methods involved in combining these two very different operating systems into one robust network.

Daschbach is a software engineer at Cisco Systems, and Elliott develops on JavaOS at Sun Microsystems. Their combined knowledge will enhance any network and will add functionality to your future networks.

You _will_ learn how to connect these two platforms when you attend Warp Expo West!

Stardock: Entrepreneur sequel (from Christian Hennecke)
I found the following announcement at the Stardock homeapge (09/07/1999):

"On September 30, 1997, Stardock Systems released the classic game Entrepreneur  for Windows and OS/2. The game received universal praise from the industry and users alike for its originality, challenging computer players, and addictive game play.

On September 30, 1999, two years after its release, Stardock will be discontinuing sales of Entrepreneur in order to begin building up for its sequel   The Corporate Machine. Because there will be no OS/2 version of The Corporate Machine, an OS/2 based sequel, currently titled Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt will be made available in the coming months."

There also has been a posting from Brad Wardell in the newsgroups, saying that FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) for OS/2 will be free for owners of a Entrepreneur license.

Help Wanted! (from Tom Stevic)
I am working on a project for Warpstock '99 to have more vendors and shareware authors represented, even if they can not come to the show in person.

The vendor response to my project is much better than I expected, and I need help. I need a few good men and women who are coming to Warpstock ( and who isn't? ) and are willing to spend a couple hours each day at one of our demonstration booths showing the products from four vendors.

In exchange for their time, the demonstrators will receive, direct from the vendors themselves, full licenses for the applications they demonstrate. Some of the vendors and applications we are representing and demonstrating are The Graham Utilities, PMFax, Priority Master II, PMview (V2.0!) and a host of others.

No experience is necessary, only a willingness to meet a lot of great friends and play with some cool software.

You need not apply in person, simply send an email to: Tom Stevic and indicate your desire to be part of this project.

The project is not officially connected with Warpstock, Inc., or the Warpstock Event team. It is simply an effort by a regular guy ( me ) to have a lot more applications I can drool over next October.

Vendor100 Goes "Full Enterprise" At Warp Expo West (from Peter Skye)
Vendor100 has grown to "Full Enterprise" size and Warp Expo West is upgrading the entire Vendor100 exhibitor space to a new technology managed client network.

"You'll be able to walk up to any client system on the network and run any Vendor100 application," said Rollin White, Chairman of Warp Expo West. "No guest will have to wait in line for a chance to use a single dedicated system running a single vendor's software. Everything will run everywhere."

The entire Vendor100 suite of software from dozens of developers will be hosted on the newly engineered network, and guests will have the unique experience of not being restricted to a particular vendor's machine in order to try their software. The network servers will use WiseManager from Serenity Systems to manage all the clients.

"WiseManager doesn't use the hard disk in your system," explained Kim Cheung, Executive Director for Serenity. "You install each application once at the server, and every client system then uses that copy. And it's totally configurable for each user. You still have your own configuration files, your own data files. But it's all stored on the server."

"There's a big savings here. Most of an application's files never change, so we only need one server copy. The few small files that do, such as configuration files, are stored in the user's personal file space. WiseManager uses the personal file if it exists, or uses the common file otherwise."

Every network administrator should carefully go over the Vendor100 network that will run continuously during Warp Expo West. The network build team will be available for questions.

"It's great for us because, if a client machine breaks, we just replace it, turn on the new one, and boot from the network. We don't have to install anything, and we're up and running again instantly," commented White.

Cheung himself supervised the installation of the dozens of different software applications on the servers. "It went fast, not much different from a single client install, and when one vendor sent an upgrade we only had to upgrade one machine - the server - not every client," said Cheung. "Suppose we had 50 machines! We'd have to install the upgrade 50 times if we didn't have a managed client network. WiseManager handles any size network -- up to 64,000 clients."

"We're also going to show how to install this new type of network, and discuss the cost and security benefits of using diskless workstations," Cheung said.

Managed client networks are a bold new technology for OS/2 network administrators, and every businessman and every OS/2 user with an interest in networking should make a point of studying and discussing the Vendor100 network - at Warp Expo West!

Warp Expo West is free. It will be held on September 18 near Disneyland in sunny Southern California.

StarOffice bought by Sun (from Fernando Cassia)
OS/2 StarOffice users should abandon all fear. In a News.com story, Marco Boerries, founder and former owner of Star Division, speaks on the future of StarOffice.

The main announcement is that the current native code, and future thin-client java editions of the software will be given away for free to all users, not just the educational and home users (as has been the previous policy).

In addition to giving the software away for free, Sun will make the original programming instructions, or "source code," available under the Sun Community Source License.

Sun plans to make money selling services such as installation and technical support for the software.

A new "thin" version, StarPortal, due by the end of the year, is handled by a central server (like the current StarOffice for Java version). Coming from Sun, and being 100% java, I think we have NO reason to fear if StarPortal will run in OS/2 :).

Sun is expected to announce the Star Division acquisition today in New York, where the company will demonstrate the use of StarPortal on a Java-enabled PalmPilot, which is connected to a server.
