  • IBM's OS/2 Strategy (by Oliver Stein)
IBM has endorsed the strengths and benefits of internet technologies and platform independence for several years, and has encouraged customers worldwide to make the transition to network computing. To facilitate the transition, IBM has enhanced OS/2 to become an excellent platform for the deployment of e-business applications, while at the same time preserving investments in legacy applications. IBM has quietly revamped its OS/2 operating system into a super-powerful tool that runs high speed networks and controls large servers with multi-processor motherboards. Oliver Stein will speak on how IBM continues to enhance OS/2 so that, in addition to preserving customer investments in legacy OS/2 applications, is the platform for future e-business deployments and for the development of e-business applications. Come find out what's happening in the OS/2 development world in upcoming releases and what enhancements are being made and for how long.
  • Creating PDF files on OS/2 (by Christian Langanke)
This session gives you the required background knowledge for creating PDF files under OS/2. Learn about what PDF files are, how to create PDF files in general and especially under OS/2 and what dependencies exist for the programs being used for this. Beside commercial software like Adbobe Acrobat Distiller free programs like Ghostscript and Poor Mans PDF are being discussed. Moreover, it will be shown, how software for creating PDF files, that is not available for OS/2, runs as a Windows-version under OS/2 with Odin.

Stardock to drop free personal tech support for OS/2 software (UPDATE) (from WarpCast)
According to their Internet site Stardock, the manufacturer of world famous OS/2 tools like Object Desktop and Process Commander, will stop OS/2 support from january 31st 2001 on. Strange enough there will be a sort of support, for $$$ per minute it seems. From their web site:
Note: Free OS/2 software Personal Technical support will end on January 31, 2001. Support for SDS OS/2 software will be $65 per incident for the first 15 minutes and $35 for each additional 15 minutes. Contact your IBM or Stardock representative to subscribe to the Stardock OS/2 support network.
They also state that Process Commander doesn't work anymore from Warp 4 FixPak 12 and on.
An answer from Stardock Systems (Kris Kwilas):
(...) The horizontal marketplace for OS/2 is withering on the vine. While eCS holds great promise for the power users who have remained with OS/2, the customer base has decreased manyfold over the last 3 years.
With OS/2 software representing less than 5% of our revenue but more than 10% of our support costs, we are withdrawing our OS/2 products when IBM terminates their Warp4 support.

Brad, please give us the code of OD for OS/2 that we can fix in future the bugs we will have in the next 10 years because OS/2 will live also in future.

While this was considered at one point, it's probably not going to happen.
The truth is that there are only a handful of people on the planet who are skilled enough in WPS programming to make use of the OD source. With all the effort and investment that has gone into it, it would be a slap in the face to those customers who have paid for it for us to release the source. (...)
And that is not enough if you also have received the Stardock Newsletter:
Coming later this month in Stardock Magazine: September 2000 part 2
  • Stardock History: Part 1 - OS/2
Hopefully this "History" won't be the 'letter of the year' from Brad Wardell because he think that there won't be any note in the 'letter of the year 2001'...

JFS Becomes Part of All eComStation Products (from Bob St.John)
Serenity Systems announced today that it has reached a new agreement with IBM regarding software rights associated with eComStation (eCS).
Specifically, the new agreement calls for the Journaling File System (JFS), once available only in the eCS Professional product, or as a fee based optional feature, will now become part of the eCS base product with no change in product pricing.
"We were able to convince IBM to let us include JFS with no increase in price and we are passing the new functions to the user, along with significant cost savings." said Bob St.John, Director of Business Development for Serenity Systems. Executive Director Kim Cheung added, "Today, the size of disks used in all PCs warrants a JFS implementation. But there's more. JFS has stronger caching capabilities than HPFS. eCS has to support the Java environment, including IBM's Java 1.3 implementation which is also part of the eCS GA product, and the direction to servlets launched by products like Websphere. "To have a responsive system" continued Cheung "directed at e-commerce and Internet style computing, JFS is pivotal. IBM agreed that JFS makes the products more consistent with the direction of the industry." St.John continued, "We're delighted with the way IBM has been supporting us. eCS continues to increase its value to the industry and we are able to hold the line on costs."
For those customers who have ordered the eCS Professional, or the JFS feature, an adjustment will be made. JFS is planned to ship in th Preview product, which is expected to begin distribution the week of September 25. While JFS will make it into the Preview version of the product, the GA version will also include Java 1.3, and refreshes of TCP/IP 4.3.1 and Netscape 4.61. These features may be downloadable to registered
users of the Upgrade Protection Program.
Regards,
Bob

SysInfo/2 author call for users (from Alexey Smirnov)
I am very glad to see that my program is so popular in OS/2 community - in fact, more that 1500 copies of SysInfo/2 ver 0.57 were downloaded only from Hobbes. So I ask you to refresh your SysInfo/2 - now you can download a new, improved version of SysInfo/2 - ver. 0.60. You can get it from Hobbes.
I am interested in testing my program on new CPUs (Intel P-III,P-4, Amd Athlon & Duron) and on various video chips: #9, Trident, AvanceLogic, Intel81X and so on. Please, send me some info in you are using these video chips with *NATIVE* drivers (not SDD or GRADD) and SysInfo/2 shows something wrong. Also, if SysInfo/2 shows wrong info in some other pages (1st page - "System", Last - "DeviceTree", MMOS2 page and so on) - please, send
me a problem description and a screenshot, if it is possible. My contacts are asmirnov@mid.ru or elf@krovatka.ru.
SysInfo/2 ver. 0.57 was downloaded more then 2000 times - why did you not send me bug reports? Maybe all is working fine... ;-))
Now I am working on Network Information - IBM MPTN detection algorithm will be rewritten. Please, try to look for new information on project home page. A new build of SysInfo/2 will be published there until the end of September.

Warpstock Europe 2000: Sessions (1) (from Christian Hennecke)
As last year Warpstock Europe 2000 again offers a large variety of sessions and workshops related to all kinds of topics:
  • OS/2 in General
  • OS/2 Applications
  • The Internet and OS/2
  • OS/2 in Local Area Networks
  • OS/2 Development
Everyone, regardless of being enduser, developer or businessman, will be able to find something interesting. There are currently 21 sessions and workshops, all of which will be held in ENGLISH language. Further information on each session and workshop, the speakers, and a timetable can be obtained from our homepage at http://warpstock.os2.org/en/program/. Have a look at the following small selection from the program:
  • 32-bit Windows goes OS/2 - Project Odin (by Achim Hasenmueller)
OS/2 was "the integration platform" before IBM decided it wouldn't support Windows 95 applications. The Odin project, which was started in 1997, aims to fill this gap. Odin has advanced to a point, where it is becoming very useful. This presentation gives an overview of the Odin project, its architecture, its strategy for now and the future -- and an amazing demonstration of what the technology can already do now for home users and enterprises.
  • How to write a product review (by Esther Schindler)
Maybe you want to write a review of a new OS/2 program for your user group newsletter. Perhaps you dream about becoming a freelance writer for a professional computer magazine. If you market an application, you might want to understand how the computer press works, so you improve your chances of getting your program written about. Or, maybe you just want to understand how the review process works. This session will describe how the computer press chooses a product for review, how one goes about examining it, and what the review contains.
  • Workspace on Demand V3.0 (by Oliver Mark)
Workspace On-Demand Version 3 is logically a follow-on to Version2, but technically a revolution in Thin-Client. Beside the discussion whether it was necessary or not, this Version runs transparently either on Warp Server, NT Server or Linux and boots a variety of Clients - including of course OS/2. Many new features to find, even in the new OS/2 Server and Client. Be excited about a full Server-managed Environment to maintain a low TCO (Total Cost of
Onwership) and have full control of your clients.
  • Building dynamic web pages using PHP (by Andreas Linde)
Providing dynamic content for webpages is a key technology on the web. In this session you will learn how to build dynamic webpages using PHP, the Apache Webserver, the MySQL database and OS/2. You will also see what the main differences to other technologies like CGIs, Servlets etc. are.
Stay tuned for more information!

Opera port NOT cancelled (from Adrian Gschwend)
There was a posting at Warpcast that the OS/2 port of Opera is cancelled, this is definitely not true. As a member of the OS/2 port list I know what I am talking about. It looks like there is a communication problem in Opera itself, they have problems in updating the webpage because of hardware problems but they promised me to do that as soon as possible. Currently the Opera for OS/2 port gets 18 out of 20 points so no reason to worry at all. I know that we have to release an alpha version to show the community that there *is* a port, but this will happen as soon as we think it's worth to release one. I do have a version on my system. The newsgroup for the port will be opera.os2 at news.opera.no If you are interested in this port I recommend you to join this server, later if you are an alpha tester (everyone can get the alpha as soon as it is released) you should post bugs to this newsgroup as well. I'm sorry about the missinformation.

OS/2 on an Apple PPC (from Chris Backas)
Chris Backas has written a mail to the news service Warpcast that he has running an OS/2 Warp on an Apple iBook and maybe wants to write a FAQ. After that mail he got over a dozen eMails and clearified that not the OS/2 for PPC is running on his iBook. He uses the OS/2 for x86-architecture under Connectix's VirtualPC. After this good feedback he will write a FAQ soon.

Matrox declares OS/2 as older Operation System (from Klaus Staedtler)
Matrox has moved the OS/2 drivers to the older operation systems (together with windows 3.x, and NT 3.X): http://www.matrox.com/mga/drivers/latest_drivers/prev_latest.htm

The placeholder for OS/2 is now Linux on the latest driver page: http://www.matrox.com/mga/drivers/latest_drivers/home.htm

But there are some good news about the linux drivers from the Matrox user group:
Not Just For Linux
Although Matrox and most everyone is calling their new erm Linux driver a Linux driver it is in fact a XFree86 4.01 driver and is not specific to Linux, it should run on any x86 OS using XFree86 4.01. Here's the low down from Konstantinos Konstantinidis.

Just a short note to let you know that due to XFree 4's neat module loader the mga_drv.o binary released is not really a "Linux XFree" driver, but an "x86 XFree" driver.

I just copied it over my previous mga_drv.o and enjoy the new features even though I'm using FreeBSD. Basically as long as you use XFree 4 on a PC it will work, here's a bit about this from the XFree 4 release notes:
"Since the loader doesn't rely on an operating system's native dynamic loader support, it works on platforms that don't provide this feature, and makes it possible for the modules to be operating system independent (although not, of course, independent of CPU architecture). This means that a module compiled on Linux/x86 can be loaded by an X server running on Solaris/x86, or FreeBSD, or even OS/2."
BTW. XFree 86 4.X is available as Alpha at this side: ftp://borneo.gmd.de/pub/misc/XFree86OS2/alpha/

PMMail 2000 Poll (from Joerg Skottke)
Two moths ago Blueprint Software Works, Inc. started development of PMMail 2000. Today all registered customers were asked to participate in a poll about new features and ongoing support for OS/2. They are asking OS/2-users to subscribe to the product in order to ensure further development. Last time it was Matrica with their HBCI-capable Homebanking software who tried to force their OS/2 customers to subscribe and take all the financial risk. This resulted in a certain effort to make the developers of Moneydance include HBCI in their product. The only difference is that you can chose between
  • subscribe
  • not to subscribe
  • other - which gives you 30 (!) characters to explain your decision
