DFSee version 2.99 (from Jan van Wijk)
I just released version 2.99 of the DFSee utility wich includes the first step to a more friendly user-interface.

This text-based windowing system implements a command-line with a history buffer so previous commands can be recalled and edited easily.

Also, the output goes to a large scrollable window so you can page back and forth.

For those of you that don't know DFSee yet, DFSee is an FDISK, display, analysis and recovery tool for disks and filesystems.

Because of the targeted use for DFSee it is a command-line and text-only utility (no GUI). At the moment an OS/2, Win-NT and DOS (+ Win-95) version exist.

Version 2.99 also has some smaller functional updates and fixes several minor bugs.

I would very much like to hear some experiences you have with DFSee and the new user-interface, either positive or negative.

Emacs 20.3.1 for OS/2 (from Jeremy Bowen)
For anyone who wishes to try the new Emacs, there are a few issues with the current release which may be of interest:
  1. You must invoke it with "emacs -pm" because of some obscure build problem that causes it to fail as a text-mode app. (I've fixed this but want to fix a couple more problems before I create another release.)
  2. Minimizing the frame by clicking on the minimize button kills emacs.
  3. M-x revert-buffer fails (found & fixed in next release)
  4. Access to the OS/2 clipboard is not functioning.
  5. I've accidentally included some configuration files (site-start.el) from my installation which may not be appropriate for the rest of you.
Please let me know what you think. Any feedback is welcome.

Unisched 1.0 released (from Tobias Ernst)
I have completed release 1.0 of Unisched, now finally with an English version of the documentation. Unisched is a scheduler software that can run actions in the case of events (time, file system, and others). Unisched is specially optimized for use in a Fidonet node environment and, being an OS/2 VIO application, might not be too attractive for non-Fido related persons. But nevertheless it has some features that other schedulers lack, so you might want to give it a try.

Warped Code Cellar Update (from Armin Schwarz)
Most major programs at the Warped Code Cellar have been updated recently and newly added are a collection of ducuments dealing with home automation devices and network setup for HOUSE/2, the home automation program for OS/2.

Updated programs are:

HOUSE/2 v1.8

HOUSE/2 is an OS/2 application designed to program and control the inexpensive X-10 ActiveHome computer interface. This program is designed to interactively control the X-10 modules from your desktop, or you can pre-program the controller and run timed events completely stand-alone.

New are network support, one requested feature and some bug fixes.

UPS Monitor for OS/2 v1.1

UPS Monitor supports most APC brand Uninterruptible Power Sources and safely shuts down your operating system during power failures.

New are full support for all UPS parameter setting and parameter logging for the Back-UPS Pro and Smart-UPS models.

You can also find a document describing some of the X-10 home automation devices, listing features and what their pros and cons are.

For OS/2 users wondering how to setup their home peer-to-peer network to use HOUSE/2 or any other application that uses a serial port, you can read an illustrated article about how to redirect a serial port in Warp 4.0.

Timekeeper/2 (from Thomas Bradford)
TimeKeeper/2 is a program that retrieves Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) from a time server using time protocol RFC868 and compares the results to your system time and optionally updates your system time if necessary.

TimeKeeper/2 can even be configured to adjust for Daylight Saving Time if you provide your time zone information in the program settings.

TimeKeeper/2 has a set of predefined NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) servers which are synchronized with an atomic clock. When TimeKeeper/2 is installed, a server is automatically selected for you and may be changed at any time if you wish to use a different predefined server. If you have a preferred time server that is not in the preconfigured list there is an option to add servers.

TimeKeeper/2 is ideal for keeping your system time and date as accurate as possible and makes a nice addition to your Startup folder.

PGPro Scripts - v2.0 (from Don K. Eitner)
A substantial update has been made to the open-source PGPro Scripts by Don Eitner. The original script (3DShadow) has undergone a major rewrite and has been joined by a completely new script (GreetingCard) which makes creating simple foldable greeting cards under OS/2 easy! The package has been released as PGPro Scripts v2.0. There are no new features or scripts currently planned, so v2.0 ought to stay up for a while. :)

New in v2.0
-------------------
3DShadow.cwx
  • Enhanced performance.
  • Added a cancel button to the first input screen.
  • Added 4 new shadow directions.
  • Added shadow fading from one user-definable color to another.
  • Handles original object and its shadows as a single group and can re-center that group on the original object's center. GreetingCard.cwx
  • New script which lays out an 8x10 inch greeting card and prompts the user for text to place on the front and inside.
These scripts require Photo>Graphics Pro for OS/2. Comments and suggestions are welcomed, as are gifts of money, OS/2 shareware registrations, and PC hardware. :-)

ServerConfig/2 1.3 (from sehh)
I'd like to announce the release of ServerConfig/2 version 1.3.

ServerConfig/2 is a PM configuration util for Apache webserver, the InetPowerServer/2 and the IBM TCP/IP Firewall!

It has an easy to use PM interface and allows you to do things by simple mouse clicks.

It also allows you to remote configure any OS/2 and unix/linux Apache. It includes a daemon that can be compiled under any gcc and thus allows ServerConfig/2 to receive and save configurations remotely, all from OS/2 :)

Full support for the InetPowerServer, for all the services, with full GUI support for user management.

Full support for the TCP/IP Firewall, GUI interface for all the rules, log file, error log and Tunneling (VPN) support!

btw, in case you are wondering where i found the firewall, its included in tcpip 4.1/4.2/4.21.

Another Weasel update (from Peter Moylan)
Two problems have surfaced with Weasel 0.85:

1. For dial-up users, the new approach to outgoing mail means longer delays before retries. (The old version did an extra retry on every program start, but the new version waits until the scheduled time for a retry.) If you're running Weasel on a machine with a dial-up connection, and you're using it for outbound mail, then I'd suggest that you go back to version 0.82 for now. I'll have a solution for this problem soon, but it's not yet ready.

2. The wildcard matching didn't work when checking hostnames. (e.g. when checking the "trusted hosts" lists to see whether relay mail should be allowed.) I have fixed this problem in version 0.86.

If you're affected by problem #2 above then I suggest you get the new version. Otherwise don't bother, because there's yet another version due out within the next few weeks (if all goes to plan).

If you do get 0.86, you'll notice a couple of new features in PMSetup. (Filters for incoming mail, and a new criterion for accepting relay mail.) These are not yet documented or tested - I wasn't planning a new release this soon - so they're not officially supported, but feel free to experiment with them if you wish.

TheWall 0.95b released (from Eirik Overby)
I have started development of a simple program to configure the built-in firewall in TCP/IP 4.1 and above for OS/2.

It has been known for some time that IBM included some firewall functionality in their newer TCP/IP stacks, but they have never documented it. Thus, setting it up and configuring it has been quite difficult.

This program makes the whole process a lot easier, by providing a graphical user interface for managing the firewall rules, and the firewall itself.

Please consider this program a beta, and report back to me.
Comments, suggestions, bug reports and success reports are all welcome. :)

ThermoProtect Bug warning... (from David Wei)
Seems that V1.25 and V1.26 are affected with the command line parser roblem, where it would not correctly take in the ThermoAlarm values... if you *NEED* ThermoAlarm, then please revert to V1.20.

I'll be cutting out the entire command line processing code and replace it with a menu driven configuration utility, and a text mode configuration file that you can easily edit youself. But that will have to wait until my trip to Taiwan is over, and that will be a few weeks...

Thanks for your patience and support, I'll get back to work on ThermoProtect as soon as I gets back...

15.06.1999
DragText v3.1 (from Rich Walsh)
DragText v3.1 is the new release of a distinctly different Desktop enhancement for OS/2 Warp. Present almost everywhere yet invisible until needed, DragText lets you do what others can't: handle text as an object using drag & drop, access WPS objects directly from any program, and more. And, DragText is known for its stability.

v3.1 adds pickup & drop for text to DragText's core features and offers refinements to almost all its components. New users can put DragText to the test during their six week free trial, while registered users are welcome to upgrade free of charge.

Here's a summary of DragText v3.1's new features and enhancements:
  • Pickup and Drop - Any window that lets you drag text now lets you pick it up too. DragText makes a copy of the text, so you can edit or close the source window without affecting your "lazy drag".
  • Text Handling - At last, there's an easy way to copy the entire contents of a listbox (edit and command windows, too): just Ctrl-drag, no highlighting needed. Use this with windows whose text has always been hard to save, like the 'Status' window in slippm ("DOIP").
  • DTProgram's Scheduler - Execute your programs automatically at real-world intervals: daily, weekly, or monthly. Schedule objects to open, e.g.: "every weekday", "on the last Friday of the month", "on the 15th", etc. Plus, the initial run needn't be on schedule - it can be today or a year from now.
  • WPS Links - Accessing the object that opened a window is simpler: just drag or click on its System Menu button without pressing any keys. If the object is a file, pressing Ctrl will link to the program being used to view it.
  • More -
    • DTProgram now lets you view and set its objects' Object IDs.
This is handy if you use REXX.
    • DTClip's viewer provides new text separator options, a revised active statusbar and a paste-when-opened feature.
    • WPS Link Menus now display an object's path, and their Locate feature is fully implemented: the object will be selected and scrolled into view after its folder opens.
    • DT's WPS Text Links feature now searches more paths to locate objects named in text. For dlls, DragText will use the LIBPATH from your config.sys.
    • Bug fixes for problems with DTClip, DTProgram, VIO windows, intraprocess memory leaks, and UniMaint (now fully DT-enabled).

A copy of pre-configured SysBar/2's Pipe Monitor is bundled with ThermoProtect, it will give ThermoProtect an ELEGENT GUI interface, for only about 100 lines of code on my part. :) The Named Pipe will work with your own program as well, see doc for detail. Millions of Thanks to Dmitry I. Platonoff, the author of SysBar/2 for creating SysBar/2 AND for allowing me to bundle a copy of Pipe Monitor with ThermoProtect.

*Now Winbond W83782D's Stand By Voltage monitoring is supported. If I missed some monitoring feature of all those chips that I supported, please remind me. :)

!Remember that W83782D users often sees WEIRD voltage in place of their -12V and -5V? Well, guess what? Winbond decided to get cute on us, and changed the way that the value is calculated... Now ThermoProtect will automatically detect which formula should be used.

!Sometimes the "*" mark indicating ThermoAlarm will sorta double, this has been fixed.

@Modification to see if code change are required to use W83782D to read PII/Cleron/PIII's on die thermal diode. The result? I was surprised as well... NO EFFECT... Weird, hum? :)

Dialog Enhancer '99 Released (from Dialog Enhancer Support)
The Dialog Enhancer coding team is proud to announce the release of Dialog Enhancer '99 - The latest generation of the successful desktop update. Dialog Enhancer provides a simple but highly effective update to your desktop and 3rd party applications by neatly re-sizing dialogs, adding new icons, and changing the font used to WarpSans. Features available in this new exciting release are :
  1. Brand new fast 32bit multithreaded installation application with totally native compiled code.
  2. Colour Manager utility that allows the user to change hard coded control colours with ease.
  3. Additional 3rd party support for Netscape Communicator and Southsoft PM Mail etc.
  4. Fewer reboots required for updates, and user preferences are saved.
  5. Corrections to OS/2's 'Dynamic Drag' and SmallIcon display options.
  6. Increased available RAM after installation due to resource slimming techniques.
Dialog Enhancer does NOT make use of desktop hooks or background processes to modify the system at runtime, instead, it makes perfectly safe resource modifications to files that it recognises. The result is indifferent CPU overhead, increased RAM due to removal of redundant resources, and identical system stability.

To check out the vast improvements Dialog Enhancer '99 can make, and read up on it in full.

Dialog Enhancer '99 is Shareware. Previous Dialog Enhancer users remain fully registered in Dialog Enhancer '99.
Foreign language dialog packs due shortly.
