LPTool v2.04 (from Jan van Wijk)
I just released version 2.04 of the LPTool utility, which has some windowing enhancements, performance improvements and some fixes in the remote-execution part.

The text-based windowing system implements a command-line with a history buffer so previous commands can be recalled and edited easily. Also, the output goes to a large scrollable window so you can page back and forth.

For those of you that don't know LPTool yet, its main purpose is file-transfer using a standard LapLink parallel cable connection (same cable as LapLink, MS Windows INTRSRV etc)

It is being used mainly for synchronization of laptops that do not have network connectivity.

It also supports remote execution of commands over the cable, including redirection of output. (similar to TCP/IP REXEC)

At the moment, only an OS/2 version exists, so you cannot exchange files with a Windows or Linux machine.

PopGet: new mail utility (from Peter Moylan)
Several people have asked me for a way to transfer mail to Weasel from another POP server. There are existing programs to do this (e.g. fetchmail) but for various reasons people haven't been happy with them, so I finally decided to write my own. Furthermore I've written it in REXX so that it will be easy to alter: if it doesn't do precisely what you want, you should find it relatively easy to produce your own modified version.

This will be included in the "tools" collection in the next release of Weasel.

InJoy Firewall 1.2 (from Bjarne Jensen)
August 20, 1999 - F/X Communications announced today the third public release of the high performance and industrial strength InJoy Firewall.

The InJoy Firewall is Y2K ready OS/2 software designed to provide affordable gateway and firewall capability to consumers, small businesses and large enterprises.

The InJoy Firewall runs on the computer with the Internet connection and with no reconfiguration of network applications the Firewall is easy to install and works transparently. The connection protected, can be of nearly any type, including xDSL, dedicated T1 circuits, Frame Relay and even satelite connections.

This version introduces support of the interoperable IPSec VPN standard, allowing OS/2 companies to easily create secure channels to other major vendors in the market or to other InJoy products.

IPSec (Internet Protocol Security) is an Internet standard for interconnected, secure networking devices and the predominant technology in Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). It provides reliable and interoperable data exchange, ensuring confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of transmitted information.

The InJoy Firewall can serve as an ideal central site VPN solution, or it can be used as a VPN client, allowing remote workers to connect to the corporate network using secure tunnels over the Internet. The IPSec Plugin is fully IPSec compatible, and includes software-based 128-bit 3-DES cryptography.

The release of the InJoy Firewall with IPSec support is exciting news for enterprises seeking to provide secure connectivity for OS/2 branch offices, business partners, and traveling employees as well as data communications in the local area networks (intranet security).

FtpServer 0.75 (from Peter Moylan)
FtpServer has been updated to version 0.75.

LATEST CHANGES

Version 0.75:
  • Fixed a memory leak (in MDTM) that was causing problems after many files had been transferred.
  • Minor change to screen output.
  • Fixed an incompatibility with NetCache proxy.
  • Fix for file names starting with '-'.
  • Earlier killing of timeout checker where no longer needed.
  • Slight change in response to PWD command.

That first change is important for a server handling a lot of traffic. The old version was running out of file handles after about 1000 files had been transferred, and it wasn't until last week that I finally figured out why users were seeing empty directories when that happened.

There is a new programming example showing the use of these new functions.

UpdIni 1.2 & UpdSig 1.5 (from Peter Engels)
UpdIni V1.2 is now able to manage additional INIs and CFGs. XUpdSig BugFix.

UpdIni moves the files OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI into a ramdisk and copies these files back to harddisk in regular intervals. The idea behind this is to accelerate the WPS.
The WPS updates these INI files in irregular intervals with high priority, suspending all other activities for the moment. With the INI files located on a ramdisk, access time is significantly reduced, the user may even not notice any activity at all.

VNC Viewer for OS/2 PM beta 0.09 (from Akira Hatakeyama)
Greetings from Yokohama, Japan.

I release new version (beta 0.09) of VNC viewer for OS/2 PM.

This is new beta version (beta 0.09) of PM VNC viewer. I appended some requested features and fixed some problems.

Fixes:

VNC viewer saved window's size & position for next time, but if you moved window (not changing window size), it failed to save window position. Fixed to save position if window moved.

If using VNC viewer with VGA 16 colors, BGR233, TINY, GRAY failed to startup. Due to failed to load 256 pallete on VGA 16 display.

Now TINY, GRAY uses default 16 colors with 16 entry color pallet. For BGR233, VNC viewer checks avaiable colors. If enough colors avaiable (>=256), uses 256 entry pallet, and it works same as previous version. If there are not enough pallet, then VNC viewer maps BGR233 into default 16 colors, it works same as TINY color.

New Features:

Changed maximize operation. On previous versions, maximize brings window to remote desktop size. Now, if remote desktop size is greater than PM's dekstop size, remote desktop hold entire PM screen. If remote desktop have same size of PM, entire remote desktop appears on PM screen.

Titlebar or system menu still exist in this state. So if you want to use local function, ATL-SPACE will bring systemu menu.

Universal Lotto v1.0 (from Don Eitner)
Early on August 1, 1999 Don Eitner released his first stand-alone REXX program. Universal Lotto is a lotto number picking program on steroids! Coded for speed and efficiency, this small program is flexible enough to handle any number of draws from a pool of numbers that's any size (larger than the number of draws, of course). Whether you play Lotto 6/51 or 850/1500, Universal Lotto can generate a random set of numbers for you to play.

In addition, Universal Lotto includes its own entertainment-only game capabilities, so you can select numbers to play against the program's random draws. Virtual betting is not yet implemented but has top priority for the next release.

Universal Lotto is freeware, but donations are always welcomed if you appreciate the author's time and effort.
