VisualAge Smalltalk update (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Mark Dodel < feedbackDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org > I noticed this post on comp.os.os2.programmer.oop Andreas Kohl about applying the latest (and probably last) VA Smalltalk update for OS/2. IBM withdrew VAST from service as of April 30, 2006, and formed a relationship with another company (Instantiations) to maintain the Windows, AIX, Solaris and Linux version. http://www.instantiations.com/VAST/roadmap.htm "Hi, here some info about using new 6.0.3 code from windows version with IBM VisualAge for Smalltalk 6.0 under OS/2. http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21158407 The new VA Smalltalk V7 from Instanitations is no longer available for OS/2 platform, so we have to switch to windows in future.
Regards, Andreas Kohl"

DaniAtapi v0.3.19 on hobbes (from http://www.os2news.com)
This is a replacement ATAPI filter driver from Daniela Engert. From the included DANIATAPI.DOC file: "This filter driver supports all types of ATAPI devices. It is a superset of IBMIDECD.FLT, IBMATAPI.FLT and DaniADsk.FLT, and supports all devices that the mentioned drivers do. Additionally, all ATAPI devices can be accessed through the OS/2 ASPI software interface. Each EIDE channel shows up as a SCSI channel, and each ATAPI device as a SCSI device (master = SCSI ID 0, slave = SCSI ID 1)."

Mozilla Sunbird standalone Calendar app compiled for eCS-OS/2. (from http://www.os2news.com)
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/ "The Sunbird Project is a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla"s XUL user interface language" If you have access to the eComstation BetaZone (http://betazone.ecomstation.com ) you can download Sunbird version 0.3a2+ for eCS. It has been there since August 17th, but it wouldn"t run for me so I held off on posting this. The fix was to download MZFNTCFG dll from: http://www.aip.de/People/PWeilbacher/WO/Mozilla/Gecko1805/mzfntcfg_322.zip and put that in the sunbird directory.
Since Sunbird is based on Mozilla code, if you are running other Mozilla apps like SeaMonkey, FireFox, IBM Web Browser or Thunderbird, then most likely there will be a conflict in some of the shared modules. To get around this you can use Rich Walsh"s Run! utility - http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/wps/run_060.zip

OpenTTD 0.4.8 (from http://www.os2news.com)
The official port of OpenTTD 0.4.8 to OS/2 has been released. OpenTTD is an open source game in the style of "Transport Tycoon Deluxe". This version is primarily a bugfix release, and is recommended for any users of previous versions of the game. The full changelog is available at SourceForge.
Some of you may have used Paul Smedley"s version of the 0.4.8 release candidates - Paul"s patches are being merged into the trunk to enable OpenTTD 0.5 to be built with GCC on OS/2. It is recommended that you use the official version of OpenTTD, though, otherwise.
For more information on OpenTTD, see http://www.openttd.com. To download the latest version, see http://sourceforge.net/projects/openttd/. If you have any problems with the OS/2 port, contact Owen Rudge (orudgeDESPAM@DESPAMopenttd.org).

GBM.DLL 1.44 and GBM command line tools
---------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

The Generalised Bitmap Module (GBM) is a library capable of loading and
saving bitmap files in a variety of popular and less popular bitmap file
formats. Programs may be written to use this code, and thus be able to
access a variety of file formats without actually knowing what format
the pictures are in, or any details about file format itself.

In this version, extended BMP, PNG, TIF, PBM, PGM, PPM and PNM support
is additionally included. PNG and TIF support also 16, 32, 48, 64 bpp
colour depths with/without alpha channel. PPM supports also 48 bpp
colour depth. BMP supports also OS/2 RLE24 and Windows 16/32 bpp RGB
and BITFIELDS formats.

It comes with a useful set of command line bitmap manipulation tools.

Get package gbmos2_144_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

Notes for eComStation 1.2/1.2R users:
-------------------------------------
Please read the installation instructions. eCS 1.2/1.2R ships
with an old GBM.DLL (1.12) which prevents loading of the new
GBM.DLL (1.44). Please follow the instructions to use the new
GBM.DLL for all programs as well as for eCS WPS features like
bitmap previews.
If you cannot replace the eCS shipped GBM.DLL, please execute
unlock x:\\os2\\dll\\gbm.dll from a command line. Then override
the old GBM.DLL with the new one. Don\'t forget to reboot afterwards.

* An English and a German version of the GBM file dialog is included.

GBMDLG.DLL has been extended by:
* Bitmap preview within the file dialog
* Redesign to fit eComStation file dialog style

Several extensions for keyboard shortcuts have been added.
Both parts got new resources that better fit to the Warp 4
and eComStation look & feel. Resources for fonts 8.Helv and
9.WarpSans for both, German and English are available in the
sources package.

Get package gbmos2pm129_bin.zip from Hobbes.
It is also included in the WarpIN installation package (see below).

GBM.DLL REXX adapter library (GBMRX 1.01)
-----------------------------------------
(Public Domain)

PMMail for OS/2 given a new life! (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Walter Metcalf Hello everyone, VOICE recently purchased both the source code and all the rights to PMMail for OS/2 from Blueprint Software Works. This was done with the intention of correcting what few bugs currently exist in the product, and then enhance PMMail for OS/2 to bring it up to current email client standards.
It is important to emphasize that PMMail for Windows, otherwise known as PMMail2000, is NOT included in this transaction, and therefore still remains the property of BSW.
A team of knowledgeable developers are already busily working at the task of updating and documenting PMMail/2.
The new version of PMMail for OS/2 is expected to be initially distributed as shareware for a nominal amount. VOICE members are expected to be able to purchase the new version at a substantial discount, since it was their fees that were used to buy the source and rights to PMMail/2.
If you wish further information, please contact Walter F. Metcalf at the email address below.
Sincerely, Walter F. Metcalf VOICE Vice-President New PMMail Project Leader walter.os2DESPAM@DESPAMrogers.com

DFSee version 8.05 released today (from http://www.os2news.com)
DFSee version 8.05 has been released today. This version extends the powerful HEX/ASCII sector editor to work directly on (binary) files as well, keeping the size the same. > From the operating system level, just use a command like:
DFSOS2 edit somefile.bin
Cloning disks with bad-sectors is improved to allow MUCH faster operation, and will be enhanced even more in the next versions.
Searching for files in most filesystems has been made a lot faster too, using several enhancements to the FIND command.
Several smaller improvements like new menu-items have been made and a few bugs and inconsistencies have been fixed ...
DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning, filesystem and disk analysis, file recovery, UNDELETE for HPFS, JFS, and NTFS, resizing, imaging and cloning.

IBM WebSphere Application Server V5.0 Base - Ported to OS/2 (from http://www.os2news.com)
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Chris Graham < chrisgDESPAM@DESPAMwarpspeed.com.au > It gives me great pleasure to announce that I have been reasonably sucessful in getting IBM"s WebSphere Application Server V5 to run under OS/2.
It is still a work in progress, but at this point in time I have managed to get the server and administration console up and running.
I"ve not tried too much else.
I am asking for knowledgeable (ie those of you who already have a good understanding of Java in general and WAS in particular) interested people to contact me if they are interested in helping with this effort.

newLISP for OS/2 ported (from http://www.os2news.com)
++ From the VOICE OS/2-eCS News Service http://www.os2voice.org ++ From: Norman < newlisp2DESPAM@DESPAMnodep.nl > posted on ecomstation.apps I ported the fantastic scripting language "newLISP" to OS/2 using GCC.
You can find the compiled binary at http://newlisp.nodep.nl/newlisp2.html The source code can be found at the newlisp website http://www.newlisp.org *** newLISP is a LISP-like scripting language for doing things you typically do with scripting languages: CGI programming, system administration, text processing, gluing other programs together, etc. newLISP is a scripting LISP for people who are fascinated by LISP"s beauty and power of expression, but who need it stripped down to easy-to-learn essentials.
newLISP is small on resources like disk space and memory but has a deep, practical API. *** PS: the OS/2 version is still under enhancement...;-) Hope its of use, Enjoy, Norman.

Java Movie Database v1.35 Beta2 (from Juergen Ulbts)
The new Java Movie Database 1.35 Beta2 has been released on 2006-08-02.

The Java Movie Database (JMDB) is a Java program which stores the data from the IMDb Text files (Internet Movie Database - http://www.imdb.com) in several MySQL/PostgreSQL tables.
After you have imported the data, you can search for actors, movies, producers and actors. About the movies and people a lot of details are shown (depending which IMDb text files you did import).

You should update to the current release because of changes made by IMDb to the provided data (since end of January 2006 - episodes of tv series,...) which are supported since JMDB 1.35 (you can suppress showing episodes of tv series).
With Beta2 you can also suppress showing the episodes if you run the \"releasedates\" search.

Beside these functions the current version supports MySQL and also PostgreSQL.
Compared to first beta bugs in the search have been corrected. Those bugs prevented using the MySQL 4/5 setting in the JMDB-Setup for the search (so you had to go back to the MySQL 3 setting after the file import).
These errors and some more have been fixed in the current version.
Furthermore the MySQL 4/5 queries have been optimized (factor 2 faster compared to Beta1) and the PDF export of person and movie details has been optimized.

There is one problem with Innotek\'s Java 1.4.2_05 (see details in the bugs.txt), which may require that you need to push the \"Search\" button a second time.
GoldenCode Java 1.4.1 (eCS and OS/2) and all Java 1.5.x under windows I\'ve tested work without problems.
For more details look at the JMDB-Homepage: http://www.jmdb.de

We are also looking for volunteers that want to translate the program to other languages.
Please contact us via eMail (see website).

A all new version named JMDB2 is currently in the planning phase. Details are also available on our website.
The project has been registrated at sourceforge.net and will be open-source from the start.

Video/2 v0.9.8 (RC1?) (from Helmut Renner)
Video/2 is an attempt to control the many video cassettes and DVDs, which lie around in every house.

Like all his published predecessors the programme was checked for heart and kidneys by me and seems to work.
If people like to confirm this by mail with an \"I installed it and it works\", would this be beautiful and would increase my will to make new features
I have already got two of such mails by the way... ;-)
However, reports about possible faults and design weaknesses or wishes are always welcome too, of course.

By the way, this good piece is freeware of course!
