Drawingboard theme 1.0.0 released (update) (from http://www.os2news.com)

From: Christian Hennecke < christian.henneckeDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org >

David Graser and Christian Hennecke have released the Drawingboard Theme 1.0.0 for eComStation. This theme was inspired by the MacOS Drawingboard theme by Apple Japan and uses intersecting, fading lines to create the look of engineering pencil sketches.

The theme takes a new approach and bundles support for the Window Theme Manager, Icon Theme Manager, eStyler, the Scheme Palette, and Animated Mouse Pointers.

The theme comes as a WarpIN package that includes an option to display a screenshot prior to any installation activities to help you decide whether you want to give it a try or not.

You can obtain the WarpIN package from Hobbes:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/cgi-bin/h-search?sh=1&button=Search&key=drawingboard-1-0-0

If you would like to support the authors' projects, please see the included README file.

Vintage Computer Festival 10.0 (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Sellam Ismail < sellamDESPAM@DESPAMvintagetech.com >

[Moderator note: Though I don't see anything directly related to OS/2 in the exhibits listing, perhaps some folks in California might be interested in attending this event since it relates to older computers and many of us have been in the business for a long time and probably worked with some of this stuff. Perhaps you can even pickup some interesting OS/2 related items if anyone has any for sale there. It also might be good for someone to consider an OS/2 exhibit at a future event.]

COMPUTER HISTORY PIONEERS CONGREGATE ON NOVEMBER 3-4 AT VINTAGE EVENT
Vintage Computer Festival Celebrates History of Computing with live antique computers and living legends from the computer industry

LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA (PRWEB) October 26, 2007 -- The Vintage Computer Festival, a yearly event that celebrates computers and their history, is being held on November 3-4 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

Anticipation is building for what is expected to be the biggest and most well-attended event since the Festival's founding ten years ago.
Celebrated once a year in Silicon Valley, as well as three other locations worldwide, the Vintage Computer Festival is the largest and most prestigious event of its kind, featuring a lecture series, an exhibition of working vintage and antique computers, and a marketplace for traders to buy
and sell vintage computers. Collectors from around the world attend this event, which was founded in 1997. The Festival also recognizes its own history this year as it marks its tenth anniversary.

This year, attendees will be treated to several historical figures in the computer industry, including Lee Felsenstein (designer of the classic Osborne 1, one of the first portable computers, and the SOL-20, one of the first personal computers), Al Hoagland (designer of the first commercial disk drive), legendary MIT proto-hackers Bill Gosper Steve Russell (author of the first videogame, Spacewar!), Wesley Clark (not the general, but the inventor of the first transistorized computer in the US) and prolific
computer book author Lance Leventhal, who wrote dozens of computer self-help books throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

One of the keynote sessions at the Festival this year is a panel featuring the engineers who in the early 1960s designed the LINC (Laboratory INstrumentation Computer), which was a revolutionary computer design that some consider to be the first 'personal computer'.

The Festival also features a marketplace for collectors to buy, sell and trade vintage computers. There is also a screening of documentaries and films on both days of the event that have vintage computing or vintage technology themes. Some of the filmmakers will be present to talk about their work and give introductions to their films. There will also be an abstract artist (Christine Finn) on site throughout the event constructing a collaborative artwork based on discarded technology, culminating at a talk she will give on the piece at 3:00pm on Sunday.

The Computer History Museum is an ideal location for the Festival as it allows attendees the opportunity to tour the Museum's collection while also attending the lectures and exhibits organized by the VCF. Tours of the Museum's collection will be given throughout the afternoon on each day of the Festival. Special theme tours during the weekend will include 'A Brief History of the Internet' and 'The History of Video Games', which are both guided by Museum docents. There will also be live demonstrations of ancient mainframe computers that have been painstakingly restored to
working condition, including an IBM 1401 mainframe circa 1960 and a Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-1 minicomputer circa 1961 running Spacewar!, the first ever videogame, written in 1962. The game's author, Steve Russell, will also be speaking at the Festival.

The Computer History Museum is located at 1401 North Shoreline Blvd. in Mountain View, California, just off highway 101. The Vintage Computer Festival opens at 9:30am each day, with first sessions beginning at 10:00am and the exhibition and marketplace opening at 2:00pm each day. The film festival runs from 11:00am to 6:00pm each day. The Festival officially ends at 6:00pm on Sunday.

Complete event information including admission, directions to the venue and the event schedule can be found on the VCF website:

enigmail-0.95.4 for OS/2 available (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Walter Meinl < wunoDESPAM@DESPAMlsvw.de >

Source: news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.dev.ports.os2

Thanks to the enimgail developers, they loaded up my new builds of the OS/2 libc05 (for official TB and SM builds) and libc063 (for Peter's enhanced builds) versions of enigmail-0.95.4 to http://enigmail.mozdev.org . For
Seamonkey-1.1.x users please remember to uninstall first the old version, quit any instances of Seamonkey and delete enigmime.dll from the components subdir before you install the new version.

There is a nice comprehensive up-to-date tutorial to be found here:
http://www.os2world.com/content/view/14963/2/

Just a remark: in this article is a note that some users have problems with using enigmail under eCS-2.0rcx. However I could send an encrypted message to the enigmail devs containing the attached builds w/o problems with official TB-2.0.0.6 on eCS 2.0rc2. Comments are very welcomed.

Happy encrypting

Walter

[Moderator note: From the Enigmail website:

'The latest version of Enigmail is 0.95.4, working with Thunderbird 2.0 and Seamonkey 1.1

Enigmail is an extension to the mail client of Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Seamonkey which allows users to access the authentication and encryption features provided by GnuPG (see screenshots).
Enigmail is open source and dually-licensed under the GNU General Public License and the Mozilla Public License. You can download and install Enigmail from the Download page. See the Help page for post-installation

GetTYPO3v4 for OS2 (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Roland Schmalenberg < roland.schmalenbergDESPAM@DESPAMlycosxxl.de >

Hi folks,
The day before yesterday the TYPO3-team released TYPO3 version 4.1.3 with some bugfixes mainly around the extensions HTMLArea and IRRE (Inline Relational Record Editing).

During our time at Munich Sytems 2007 where we represent the well known 'Voyager project' of netlabs.org I changed my script today, finished the tests and uploaded GetTYPO3v4forOS2 version 2.11.

What is TYPO3?

For those people not knowing TYPO3 yet it should be mentioned that TYPO3 is a free Open Source Web Content Management System, released under GPL. More information can be found at http://typo3.com/ or for developers at
http://typo3.org/

Where to get, what to need?

You are able to download the script package from the home of 'TYPO3 goes eComStation', http://os4you.org/typo3goesecomstation.html All you need to
run is a working OAMP or AMP4eCS (OS/2+Apache+MySQL+PHP, WPI available from http://www.amp4ecs.de/ ), my package and time to study ;-)

Hint for TYPO3-Beginners

Those who want to use that CMS with OS/2 or eComStation the first time should start with reading our documentation (available in English, Dutch, French and German) for the TYPO3 version 3.8.x (outdated but still available) and examine the quickstart-package.

All others will be recommended to use the latest versions ...

Yours sincerly
Roland Schmalenberg

Mr. Message (AIM/ICQ client) update 10/22/2007 (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Marty Amodeo < martyamodeoDESPAM@DESPAMcomcast.net >

Mr. Message for OS/2 is an instant messenger client which is capable of communicating over AOL's Instant Messenger network using the OSCAR protocol (used in the Win32 AIM clients, jBuddy, Pidgin, Kopete, ICQ, and a variety
of other clients).

It has been updated with the following new features:
* Added a total of online/offline/away users to the Buddy Group mouse-over popup window.
* Added a notation to the Buddy information popup window when a user's profile or away message is in the process of being retrieved.
* Added the ability to read ICQ user nicknames and real names. If you don't have an alias assigned for an ICQ user, the nickname or real name will be automatically set as an alias.
* Added the ability to retrieve off-line messages for ICQ.
* Added the ability to understand 'You were added' messages from the server.
* Added timestamp field to all events passed to REXX scripts. You will have to modify your existing scripts since the parameter order has changed! See ReadMe.REXX and sample scripts for details.

It also has the following fixes and changes:
* Fixed a crash on attempting to use the 'Pre-processing for Send' event.
* Fixed a number of string-related memory leaks on event processing.
* Fixed ICQ sending HTML tags when they will not be interpreted on the receiving side.
* Fixed a sloppy shutdown when the session manager window is closed while sessions are open and running.
* Fixed the wrong status icon for an IM window when a user has just changed status and the window is opened while the status is flashing in the buddy list.
* Fixed the inability of ICQ users to set a true 'Away' status.
* Changed the automatic retrieval of buddy profile and away messages to allow better IM throughput while the automatic retrieval is going on.
* Changed window behavior so that when the buddy list is minimized, any IM windows that happen to be open at the time will not also be minimized.

To download, please visit the official Mr. Message web page:
http://mamodeo.dyndns.org/MrMessage

New features will continue to be added with each release. :-)

Greylisting deamon: Hermes & libspf2 (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Yuri Dario < mc6530DESPAM@DESPAMmclink.it >

Hermes is an SMTP proxy. We developed hermes for our own use on ITEISA, and we have perfected it with new features to cover our own needs. It is now being made public on the hope that it will help others to stop spam the same way it does for us everyday. What makes it special is that it can be used to stop spam using a combination of the following techniques:

SMTP banner delay
Most spammers will start sending data as soon as the connection is open, without waiting for the SMTP banner. What we do is delay this banner and if we have data waiting before we print it, we drop the connection.

Throttling
Hermes will process incoming SMTP commands at a slow pace. Most spammers have very little patience, so they will stop sending an email if it's taking too long to deliver.

Greylisting
Greylisting is a process that will delay incoming mails for some minutes before allowing them to be delivered. As most spammers will not resend their messages, you will not receive them. If you want a more technical description, scroll down to read a greylisting description.

DNSBL
As of hermes 1.2 you can now configure hermes to reject emails coming from ips listed on your favourite DNSBL, using the rbl_domain option.

libspf2 implements the Sender Policy Framework, a part of the SPF/SRS protocol pair. libspf2 is a library which allows email systems such as Sendmail, Postfix, Exim, Zmailer and MS Exchange to check SPF records and make sure that the email is authorized by the domain name that it is coming from. This prevents email forgery, commonly used by spammers, scammers and email viruses/worms.

The latest OS/2 build for Hermes (and libspf2) can be found here:

http://web.os2power.com/yuri/Hermes

Since this software is ported for free, donations are welcome! you can use PayPal to donate me and support OS/2 developement. If you like to sponsor current OS/2 software developement, follow instructions at
http://web.os2power.com/yuri/HomePage

Thanks,

Yuri Dario

New enhanced releases of Mozilla applications (Gecko 1.8.1.8 (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Peter Weilbacher < mozillaDESPAM@DESPAMweilbacher.org >

My newest batch of enhanced Mozilla apps
- SeaMonkey 1.1.5 (integrated internet suite, successor of 'Mozilla')
- PmW-Fx 2.0.0.8 (internet browser, an enhanced Firefox 2.0.0.8)
- PmW-Tb 2.0.0.8 (eMail client, an enhanced Thunderbird 2.0.0.8)
are available via http://pmw-warpzilla.sf.net/ . Enhancements over the official versions are
* SVG and Canvas support
* better WPS integration
* MNG/JNG support
* included ipluginw.dll for plugin support
* high memory support
* small improvements

All applications need libc063.dll to run, find the package on
ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc

These releases pick up all the changes and several security fixes done by Mozilla since my Gecko 1.8.1.5 release, i.e. between 21 Jul 2007 and 12 Oct 2007.
Three small OS/2 specific changes were done:
- fix inconsistent arrow button size in Add Bookmark dialog of PmW-Fx
- Save dialog now comes up when running without the WPS
- File extensions of downloaded files are no longer uppercased

Note: I have managed to push a few features into the main source tree (e.g. EA URL tagging of downloads) that is the reason why some of them are not listed in the ReadMes any more.

Peter.

This workshop is designed to show how to set up Maul Publisher to create documents on the eCS platform. The topics covered will include installation of accompanying tools, setup of pages, creating cliparts, codepages, as well as scanning and image manipulation.

The idea is that people bring their own laptop, and ask real-world questions.

DFSee 9.02 released today (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Jan van Wijk < infoDESPAM@DESPAMdfsee.com >

DFSee version 9.02 has been released today

It fixes a few rather minor bugs, and adds a menu item to clear the unused sectors in the first track of a disk. More important for me, it can now generate static-HTML documentation for its menu-system :-)

Although not all screen-shots have been added yet, you can download the results from the DFSee website:

http://www.dfsee.com/dfsee/dfsmenu-html.zip

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning, filesystem and disk analysis, file recovery, UNDELETE for HPFS JFS, and NTFS, resizing
and smart imaging or cloning.

More details at:

Or from the HOBBES website:

- MENU Disable Bootmanager items if BMGR is not present
- MENU2HTML -h option generates static HTML pages, not PHP
- NTFS next-lsn preserved on auto-display related MFT

- PART -xml added 'beyondenddisk' warning property to XML

Uniaud 1.2 .0beta1 *** Experimental release. *** (from http://www.os2news.com)
From: Mark Dodel < feedbackDESPAM@DESPAMos2voice.org >

'the Universal Audio Driver for eCS and OS/2.'

UNIAUD32 1.2.0beta1 aka 'ReSync 0.9.5'

This is an experimental test release of a Resync of ALSA 0.9.5 in UniAud.
It is only the uniaud32.sys driver. You must already have a recent UniAud
release installed to use this. Though I found this release works fine on
my Thinkpad T42p, please heed the warning below.

'WARNING

These 1.2.0 beta releases should be treated with the caution due to any
experimental/unstable software. They should not be used on a production
system without proper system backups. Always keep a bootable CD handy for
reverting to a more stable release of Uniaud32.sys in case this one should
trap.'
