Associates of the "Freedom of Choice Project" (from Andreas Linde)
General/Public Announcement
from: Associates of the "Freedom of Choice Project"
to: Users, programmers, resellers of all platforms
e.g. OS/2, Linux, BeOS, BSD, DOS/Windows, EPOC,
Solaris, Unix, Mac...
The Freedom of Choice Project is an organized team effort to put an end to Microsoft"s exclusive distributorship with the PC makers such as Compaq, Dell, Gateway etc.. We want you to be part of that team--to help us stop the preinstallation [bundling or tying] of Microsoft software on new as well as used PCs. All of us who rely upon computers suffer losses in time, money and even creative spirit due to the MSFT monopoly of software as well as all the "Windows optimized" hardware such as modems, scanners, and printers.
If you"re tired of fighting over compatible device drivers, peripherals, and the basic operating system, then join the Freedom of Choice Project right now. It"s designed for you, regardless of which platform(s) you prefer, regardless of whether you"re a beginning user, an expert programmer or a computer dealer.
Take this opportunity to add your voice to the growing public uproar against coerced use of Microsoft products! Don"t wait another moment. Get all the details by visiting The 13th Floor"s Freedom of Choice page at www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/choice.htmlhttp://www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/choice.html">www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/choice.html> and be sure to use the links there to actively support the Freedom of Choice project.

Win32-OS/2 News (from Andreas Linde)
This text is taken from the Win32-OS/2 homepage:

Important Note on the Future of Win32-OS/2
There is bad news and good news.

The bad news is that no work has been done on Win32-OS/2 since A0.04 was released in September 1998. Also, the individuals leading the development of Win32-OS/2 have called it quits, mostly because their day jobs have become too demanding. So A0.04 is the last version of Win32-OS/2.

The good news is much better, though. The OS/2 Netlabs has decided to take over development of Win32-OS/2, but with a twist. The EverBlue Project is a group of developers who are porting xlib to OS/2. Xlib is like the Presentation Manager for the Unix. It is the core library for graphical applications that run under X Windows on Unix and Unix-like operating systems. By bringing xlib to OS/2, it will be possible to port easily almost every Unix application to OS/2. We already have emx for porting non-GUI applications; xlib takes care of the rest.

What does this have to do with Win32-OS/2? Once xlib is ported to OS/2, the OS/2 Netlabs will begin porting Wine itself to OS/2. The OS/2 version of Wine may use some of the code of Win32-OS/2, specifically the code that converts and loads a Win32 application.

Currently, the OS/2 Netlabs is making preparations for accepting the source code to Win32-OS/2. The source code to Win32-OS/2 itself will not be available for some time, if ever. The reason is that a some of the code is borrowed from other places, and therefore cannot be publicly released until it is "cleaned up". In the process of merging Win32-OS/2 with Wine, the OS/2 Netlabs will remove most of the offending code, and the rest will be made available along with the source code to Wine itself.

Please do not bother the Win32-OS/2 or OS/2 Netlabs members with any questions, especially questions as to when any of this will occur. This web page and the OS/2 Netlabs website are your only sources of information.

Scitech Display Doctor (from Kendall Bennett)
We have been working very hard on getting the next beta release of SciTech Display Doctor completed, and ready for testing. However the next release probably won"t be ready for a week or so we are in the process of running our QA tests on all our new chipset drivers. Many of you who have been testing the product from the start, probably know that the 21-day trial period is about to expire. Until we get the next beta out, you will have to uninstall the product and revert back to your original display drivers.
However there is another option. Later in the week we will be opening our online store for taking pre-orders of the OS/2 version of the product. You can also order the product starting tomorrow if you email/fax/phone in your order using the OS/2 order forms. You can download the order forms as: txt-file
wri-file
Due to popular demand from our international customers, we have changed the pricing structure for the OS/2 product so that you can order an electronic only version for $36.95, or order the version with disk and manual for $39.95. If you order the disk and manual, you will be sent a registration code immediately, followed by the disk and manual for the GA release of the product.
Some of you are probably wondering what have we been working on, and what stuff has been fixed in the coming beta. Well the following partial list should satisfy your curiosity:
  • Added mechanism to select small or large fonts for our GRADD drivers.
  • Lines are now fully accelerated. The previous beta did not accelerate line drawing, which shows up in benchmark scores.
  • Nearly complete on the OS/2 display properties page replacement, so you can select all the cool new display modes that SDD for OS/2 provides.
  • Fixed the hardware cursor problem when changing from mono to color cursors, leaving the mono cursor visible on the screen.
  • Fixed the problem of restoring the PM desktop when coming back from fullscreen OS/2 sessions that program the hardware directly (ie: XFree86/2).
  • Added support for the Matrox Millenium and Millenium II. Also lots of updates and fixes for the Mystique, G100 and G200.
  • Lots of new full Nucleus chipset drivers coming, including ATI, Cirrus, Macronix, SiS, IGS and more.
