Quatech's DSC-200/300 provides two independent serial channels, each of which is jumper configurable for either RS-422 or RS-485. As a PCI device, the DSC-200/300 is automatically configured by the computer's BIOS or operating system. The two ports share a single interrupt and are addressed in a contiguous 16 byte I/O block. An interrupt status register is provided to manage the shared interrupt. The DSC-200/300 completely adheres to the PCI 2.1 specification, and all PCI registers are properly implemented, so users can be assured that the DSC-200/300 will not conflict with other properly implemented PCI devices.
As an enhanced serial adapter, the DSC-200/300 has a clock-multiplying feature which allows it to reach data rates as high as 921.6 kbps--a significant improvement over legacy serial boards with a maximum data rate of 115.2 kbps. The standard DSC-200/300 is implemented with 16550 UARTs containing 16-byte FIFOs that reduce processing overhead and allow data rates to 230.4 kbps. The optional upgrade to 16750 UARTs containing 64-byte FIFOs (DSC-200/300-750) can increase board speed to 921.6 kbps. This upgrade is recommended for heavy multi-tasking environments and for applications involving high data rates.
To maintain maximum signal integrity, Quatech's DSC-200/300 uses a four-layer board design. But, for even more protection in industrial environments, an optional surge suppression package is available. This "IND" option, which is available only on the standard board, applies a surge suppressor to each line that is capable of sustaining up to 40A 20ms peak transient surges, a clamping voltage of 30V and a peak energy dissipation of 0.1 Joules.
All necessary software is included to install the DSC-200/300 under OS/2.
