| XZ Utils provide a general purporse data compression library and command line tools.
The native file format is the .xz format, but also the legacy .lzma format is supported. The .xz format supports multiple compression algorithms, which are called \"filters\" in context of XZ Utils. The primary filter is currently LZMA2. With typical files, XZ Utils create about 30 % smaller files than gzip. To ease adapting support for the .xz format into existing applications and scripts, the API of liblzma is somewhat similar to the API of the popular zlib library. For the same reason, the command line tool xz has similar command line syntax than that of gzip. When aiming for the highest compression ratio, LZMA2 encoder uses a lot of CPU time and may use, depending on the settings, even hundreds of megabytes of RAM. However, in fast modes, LZMA2 encoder competes with bzip2 in compression speed, RAM usage, and compression ratio. LZMA2 is reasonably fast to decompress. It is a little slower than gzip, but a lot faster than bzip2. Being fast to decompress means that the .xz format is especially nice when the same file will be decompressed very many times (usually on different computers), which is the case e.g. when distributing software packages. In such situations, it\'s not too bad if the compression takes some time, since that needs to be done only once to benefit many people. With some file types, combining (or \"chaining\") LZMA2 with an additional filter can improve compression ratio. A filter chain may contain up to four filters, although usually only one two is used. For example, putting a BCJ (Branch/Call/Jump) filter before LZMA2 in the filter chain can improve compression ratio of executable files. Since the .xz format allows adding new filter IDs, it is possible that some day there will be a filter that is, for example, much faster to compress than LZMA2 (but probably with worse compression ratio). Similarly, it is possible that some day there is a filter that will compress better than LZMA2. XZ Utils doesn\'t support multithreaded compression or decompression yet. | Ccrypt is a utility for encrypting and decrypting files and streams.
It was designed as a replacement for the standard unix crypt utility, which is notorious for using a very weak encryption algorithm. ccrypt is based on the Rijndael cipher, which is the U.S. government\'s chosen candidate for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), see: http://www.nist.gov/aes This cipher is believed to provide very strong security. Unlike unix crypt, the algorithm provided by ccrypt is not symmetric, i.e., one must specify whether to encrypt or decrypt. The most common way to invoke ccrypt is via the commands ccencrypt and ccdecrypt. There is also a ccat command for decrypting a file directly to the terminal, thus reducing the likelihood of leaving temporary plaintext files around. In addition, there is a compatibility mode for decrypting legacy unix crypt files. An emacs mode is also supplied forediting encrypted text files. Encryption and decryption depends on a keyword (or key phrase) supplied by the user. By default, the user is prompted to enter a keyword from the terminal. Keywords can consist of any number of characters, and all characters are significant (although ccrypt internally hashes the key to 256 bits). Longer keywords provide better security than short ones, since they are less likely to be discovered by exhaustive search. | The build that was done with GCC 4.4.0 dated 2009-04-26 using -static-libgcc (therefore, no gcc440.dll is needed).
I added HTML5 audio and video support, which is one of the enhancements of the 3.5 release over 3.0. Thanks to Rich Walsh, who made the work in bugs 448918 and 495352. The patches bake now on the trunk for testing. However, broader testing of these patches will help to identify problems (if any ;)). GCC 4.4.0 does not produce a useful ipluginw.dll. Therefore it was recompiled using GCC 3.3.5 (this time it should really work for all!). No additional unofficial fixes were necessary, yeah, we\'re getting closer.
