FreeType/2 version 1.3.2 released (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

FreeType/2 is a high-quality font driver (IFI) for supporting TrueType fonts in OS/2 Presentation Manager. It is a replacement for OS/2’s built-in TRUETYPE.DLL, and is based on the open source FreeType library. With FreeType/2, all programs which rely on Presentation Manager for rendering text will benefit from the improved font support.

Note: FreeType/2 is a system font driver, and not should not be confused with the FreeType library (which is used by certain software like Mozilla or QT).

Version 1.3.2 contains improvements in two areas. First, several previously-missing flags in the GPI FONTMETRICS structure are now set correctly (this is mainly of interest to developers). Also, a number of fixes have been made to Asian glyphlist processing, such that reliability on DBCS systems (particularly Japanese) should be significantly improved.

Firefox 4.0pre and Seamonkey 2.1b3pre - 20110327 (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

New betas of Firefox and Seamonkey have been released. They include
a significant change in the way the Places and Cookies databases are
handled. Because there are compatibility issues with earlier versions
of these apps, please read this entire announcement.

* Firefox v4.0pre:
http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/mozilla/firefox-20110327.zip /> or
http://class='extlink'http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/firefox-20110327.zip /> * Seamonkey v2.1b3pre:
http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming/mozilla/seamonkey-20110327.zip /> or
http://class='extlink'http://e-vertise.com/warpzilla/seamonkey-20110327.zip

New />---
Thanks to a major effort by Ruediger Ihle, OS/2-eCS’s version of SQLite
now supports a feature that lets multiple threads access a database at
the same time ("WAL journalling"). The betas from 2011/02/10 lacked
this support, causing URL bar autocompletion to fail in both browsers
and sometimes caused Firefox to take several minutes to load a page.

This new feature is only used for the Cookies and Places (i.e. history)
databases and will be standard in Firefox 4.0 and Seamonkey 2.1. Its
use does have a major drawback: these databases will NOT be compatible
with earlier versions of FF or SM after you use these betas. HOWEVER,
each beta includes a REXX script, ’dbrestore.cmd’, that will restore
compatibility. See ’Notes’ (below) for details.

Fixes
-----
Clipboard: The apps no longer copy to the clipboard during shutdown.

Icons: The corruption in Seamonkey’s icons has been fixed.

Print Dialog: A bug that could cause a crash when accessing a printer’s
Properties dialog has been fixed.

Previous Enhancements
---------------------
Video: Dramatic reductions in CPU usage will be seen when viewing OGG
videos, and to a lesser extent, WebM videos. Overall video performance
should be noticeably improved for SNAP and GenGradd users running their
displays in full-color mode, thanks to the implementation of DIVE.

Printing Support: All native printer drivers will work if their output
resolution is set to 600 DPI or less. Mozilla’s built-in Postscript
support is also available for use, as is its PDF support. Please read
PRINTING.txt in the exe’s directory for details.

Memory Management: With a few trivial exceptions, the Mozilla apps no
longer use any shared memory beyond what is needed to load their dlls.
Problems that have been attributed to low or no shared memory should
not occur.

Font Selection: The apps should do a better job of selecting DBCS fonts
and fonts with less common font weights such as "Thin" or "Heavy".

Copy Link Location: A bug that caused characters to be deleted from
URLs when using the ’Copy Link Location’ menu item has been fixed.

Exceptq Support: If the app crashes, Exceptq v7.1 will beep and then
create an exception report containing details of the crash. You can
send these reports to <
http://class='mailtolink'crash@e-vertise.com>;. If you would prefer not
to create these reports, add "SET NSPR_NO_EXCEPTQ=Y" to config.sys.

Bugs
----
Both apps will occasionally "smear" the video when scrolling. In most
cases, the easiest workaround is to resize the window slightly to force
its redisplay.

Notes
-----

Database Compatibility
----------------------
Before using these betas, open your Profile directory and make backups
of ’places.sqlite’ and ’cookies.sqlite’. Also, copy ’dbrestore.cmd’
from the main directory to the Profile directory for later use.

To use earlier versions of FF or SM after using these betas, open your
Profile directory and run ’dbrestore.cmd’. It will report whether it
was successful; running it multiple times will not cause any harm.

If you forget to run the script before opening an earlier version of
FF or SM, the app will add ".corrupt" to the filenames, and then create
new empty versions of these files. To recover, delete or rename the
new files, remove the ".corrupt" extension from the original files,
then run the script.

Note: After using these betas, cookies.sqlite and places.sqlite will
probably be much larger than they used to be. The apps appear to add
a lot of empty space to avoid having to expand the files while in use.

Video
-----
DIVE lets an app bypass PM’s graphics subsystem and write directly to
your video card’s memory. This improves display speed but can cause
problems on some systems. Use the following to disable DIVE:

- uncheck "Use hardware acceleration when available".
In Firefox, it’s on the Options dialog’s ’Advanced->General’ tab.
In Seamonkey, this is in Preferences under ’Appearance->Content’.
- start the app in "safe mode" (use "/safe-mode" on the command line)
- add "SET MOZ_ACCELERATED=0" to config.sys.

If the mouse pointer disappears when starting the app, you can use
"SET MOZ_ACCELERATED=1" to override automatic detection of how your
video driver displays the pointer.

Support
-------
Community support for these betas and all Mozilla apps is available
through the newsgroups ’mozilla.dev.ports.os2’ or ’comp.os.os2.apps’.
Messages posted to other forums may not be seen by the developers.

Exim4/Courier IMAP port needs testers (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

I’m looking for people using OS/2 as mail server to test Exim 4.73 and Courier IMAP/Pop3 daemons.

A short description is available at the following URL:

 http://web.os2power.com/yuri/EximInternetMailer

Exim can be used in parallel with an existing mail server to delivery mail, so you can test it while still running your current mail software.

While Exim binaries are already uploaded, Courier daemons will follow soon (they just need to be repackaged).

Update to USB host controller drivers (von NN)

Some experimental USB drivers have been updated (3/20/2011), which feature improved hardware compatibility, including proper PCI PM (power management) support. This allows USB ports to be used when warm booting from Windows, which can sometimes leave them in a powered down state.

New Version EasySync 1.12 (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

This is just to inform you that a new version of EasySync is now
available via hobbes.
This is version 1.12 build 201102161

Download: http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/download/pub/os2/util/disk/EasySync112.wpi

EasySync is a shareware product that gives you an easy way to
synchronize and or backup directories.

With the latest version of EasySync (1.12) itãs even easier to
synchronise directories thanks to the built in support for NetDriveÍ.
Together with NetDrive you can now synchronise with an FTP site, or
synchronise/backup your files with a SAMBA server or a NTFS disk.
EasySync lets you see at a glance what files need to be updated
between two directories whether they reside on the same machine or
even on separate PCãs on the network. This simple but powerful
graphical interface allows you show files which should be updated,
files that have been deleted, files that are missing, files that are
newer and older, were deleted Ó.. plus the proposed transfer
direction. Transfer can be set to bi-directional to fully synchronize
two directories or uni-directional to limit which directory(ies) is/
are updated as may often be the case when backing up files. A choice
to display files/directories which have been selected to be ignored
during the synchronisation process is a standard option

Failsafe:
Whenever a file is about to be overwritten or deleted it is first
stored on disk for later retrieval should it be necessary. The
location of these files is called the Vault. The vault contains any
number of versions of the same file every time that file is deleted or
overwritten. The number of versions stored is only limited by the
available disk space or by a number that you as a user have
specified. All transactions are logged so that you can always verify
what actions have taken place.

The main changes/improvements from the previous version are:

Added:

* A Script list which contains a list of scripts to be
sequentially executed.
* An option to include or exclude subdirectories
* An option to terminate the program when a script ends depending
on whether errors occurred or not.

Corrected

* Ignore files sometimes incorrectly displayed in Local/Remote
window.
* Refresh and or a new entry not always correctly shown.
* When the direction is changed the transfer indication not always
correctly shown.
* When direction was from Local/Remote to Local, then a deleted
file not correctly shown.
* If MD5 checking with identical file size was enabled, then
newest file not always correctly found.
* Files not always deleted when a vault was disabled.

[New] Exceptq v7.1 and MapXQS v1.0 (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

I’m pleased to announce the release of Exceptq v7.1 and MapXQS v1.0.
With just 5 lines of code, developers can add Exceptq’s comprehensive trap
reporting facility to their apps. If the app encounters a fatal exception,
Exceptq will generate a report containing: the call stack, disassembly of
the faulting instructions, a stack dump, a listing of dlls loaded into the
process, and more.

Exceptq v7.1 offers these new features:

* Support for symbol files in the new XQS format. .XQS files have none of
the size limitations of .SYM files, include module info for each symbol,
and are extensible. MapXQS, included in the package, will create them
from mapfiles generated by IBM, GCC, OpenWatcom, and Borland linkers.

* The non-fatal EXCEPTQ_DEBUG_EXCEPTION lets developers generate Exceptq
reports at any point in their program’s execution. Additional debugging
data can be passed to the handler for inclusion in the report.

* Support for an application-provided string containing version or build
information that will appear at the top of the report.

* Better identification of addresses contained in registers, and new system
info such as total memory, virtual address limit, and processor count.

The developer’s edition containing how-to information and needed files is
available from:
http://class='extlink'http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php />or
http://class='extlink'http://e-vertise.com/misc/exceptq71-dev.zip

A user’s edition with just dlls and installation info can be had from:
http://class='extlink'http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/h-search.php />or
http://class='extlink'http://e-vertise.com/misc/exceptq71.zip

If you have an app that uses an earlier version of Exceptq, please upgrade
to v7.1.
