New netlabs server is coming (von NN)
Dear community,

Today we physically replaced the old netlabs.org web server by the new, much more powerful one! While there was much work done already, not
everything is finished yet. Please give me some time now to finish the migration, I will try my very best to make sure all the information are back
online as soon as possible and hopefully even more soon.

Again, I would like to say a big \"thank you!\" to everyone that contributed to the new server!

Changes:

- new site layout! You just get an impression right now, much more to come :-) I *know* it is broken for now so don\'t report that ;) It is just *very*
basic right now.
- most links have a different structure now. While the sub domains like warpin.netlabs.org still work I have to add some redirects for links &
downloads etc.
- new XML/XSLT based CMS (thanks a lot to Arne Blankerts for his fCMS!, see

http:// www.fcms.de

for more information, it rocks!). It\'s blazing fast :)
- the FTP server is case sensitive now
- all FTP users are gone, I will migrate them as soon as possible. Anonymous user works for sure
- Subversion & TRAC is running on the new server now, it is much faster :-)
- CVS moved away already some days ago, now at cvs.netlabs.org.

Snapshots of the old projects are available at

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/snapshots

- IRC points to irc.aroa.ch for now, will change (see below)

To be moved within the next few days:

http://wiki.netlabs.org

http://www.edm2.com

You will notice when this is done because the pages will react much faster ;)

Server:

After years of running the web server on OS/2 I decided to move to FreeBSD as a server OS for various reasons which I would like to explain
because some people do not seem to understand that:

- My daytime job is administrating servers, most servers I run are FreeBSD so I know this OS pretty well

- netlabs.org provides mainly software for the desktop. I prefer to invest time in organizing netlabs.org itself than debugging issues on the server
just because most of the software I run on the server are made for Unix (TRAC, Subversion, Apache...) and might not work on OS/2 that easy

- I do much more on this server than just providing basic services like a little bit of PHP & MySQL. We use quite a bunch of software on this server,
see

http://wiki.netlabs.org/index.php/R2-d2

if you are interested in the details

- FreeBSD works just fine on this dualcore AMD CPU and because the server is in Hamburg (Germany) and I live in Biel (Switzerland) I didn\'t feel like experimenting on new hardware

- we simply have much more important things to discuss than the OS of netlabs.org. Talk about Voyager for example! :-)

Unfortunately the admin of the eCS Network refuses to accept any servers in the IRC network which are not running OS/2 so I am not allowed to
connect to that network anymore. While I find that very narrow-minded I have to accept that and move the IRC network. In the next days I will most probably join another existing network and #netlabs will move to that network as well.

I will announce that for sure. For now irc.netlabs.org points to irc.aroa.ch. I would have preferred to stay on eCS Network because that\'s where we belong...

So far, I\'m sure I forgot some things but I will inform again in a few days or so.

Thanks again to Arne for his friendly support with fCMS, the new hardware (thanks for the reinstall ;) and finally changing the server itself :-) I will also bug him the next weeks till the web pages look the way I want it. Also thanks to n@work which still provides a very fast Internet connection!
With the new server you should be able to notice it :-)

cu

Adrian

eComStation 2.0 Beta 3 and preview 2.1 (von warpspace)
Serenity Systems International is pleased to announce the availability of eComStation 2.0 Beta 3 for download.
(subject to change)

Support for ACPI: the ability to support ACPI is becoming more and more important in
order to take advantage of new power management capabilities, or even to support the
operating system on newer hardware. Therefore, support for this technology will be an
important feature in the new version of eComStation will be important to many users.
This is such a big project and moving target, that installation will be optional and
not fully functional on all hardware.

Improved harddisk management: eComStation 2.0 incorporates features to resize existing
harddisk volumes to create room for the installation of eComStation alongside other installed
operating systems. This will be available during the installation process, as well as
afterwards. This is especially interesting for users that want to keep using their
preloaded operating system, but like to have the ability to run eComStation alongside.
Besides resizing, eComStation 2.0 will check your harddrive prior to install and will
be able to (automtically) fix common found problems with your harddrive volumes.

Support for Bootable JFS: JFS offers advantages in system performance as well as
recovery times and stability. The new eComStation will offer the option to boot from
such volumes, enabling all data and programs to benefit from this modern file system.
» more information

Support for Samba: built-in for accessing Samba network resources on either Windows
or Linux file servers, further improves the integration of eComStation in existing
networks, including NAS devices.

GenMAC: This driver offers support for the most common modern network cards, with a
strong accent on gigabit and on-board (wireless) network cards.

Firewall configuration: a new configuration utility for the eComStation firewall will be
provided. The built-in firewall is very efficient and its power will be unleashed by a
simple to use yet powerful configuration tool.

eComStation 2.0 is expected to be available early 2007.
Available releases

* eComStation 2.0 beta 1
* eComStation 2.0 beta 2
* eComStation 2.0 Beta 3

and new:

Proposed components of eComStation 2.1 and beyond:
ACPI updates: the ACPI project will be enhanced and an updated release will be included
in a newer release of eComStation.

CUPS: provides a portable printing layer for UNIX-based operating systems. It is
developed and maintained by Easy Software Products to promote a standard printing
solution and is the standard printing system in MacOS X and most Linux distributions.
It supports hundreds of modern printers.

Samba Server support: enables the utilization of your eComStation machine as a
(cost-efficient) file-server for your SOHO network.

OpenLDAP: OpenLDAP enables you to authenticate your eComStation workstation against a
Windows 2003 Active Directory server, as well as Novell or Linux networks. It is an open
source suite of LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) applications and development
tools. The eComStation implementation will feature a convenient WPS configuration frontend.

Adding OS/2 Warp 4.52 on Windows Vista Boot Manager (von NN)
On this case OS/2 Warp 4.52 was already installed on an HPFS partition on the hard disk. And installed Windows Vista on an extended partition.

Like always when you try to install an OS, it mess up the boot sector and removed the OS/2 Boot Manager and started the Windows Vista Boot
Manager.

To be able to add OS/2 Warp 4.52 on you Vista Boot Manager you require the following:

* Windows Vista (I used rel 6000)

* OS/2 Warp 4.52 already installed on a HPFS partition of you HardDisk

* Neosmart EasyBCD for Windows Vista (If you want to make your life easier):
