VirtualBox for OS/2 and eComStation Project Started (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

For a general introduction into VirtualBox, see:

http://http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox/

Early versions of VirtualBox had already been ported to OS/2 but these efforts had been suspended due to technical problems and lack of the Qt 4 library for the GUI. With the Qt 4 library and the lastest GCC compiler available, basic obstacles have been removed and a first success can already be reported: The support driver works and a DOS guest can be booted.

A team of several developers will work on the project and funding will be provided by the OS/2 and eComStation community. If you would like to contribute to this port, you are welcome to buy sponsoring units at the Mensys online shop at:

http://http://www.mensys.com/shop/VirtualBoxPorting

For information about the project and its status, see:

DFSee version 10.4 released (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

DFSee itself has a fix for incorrect positioned Clone and Format dialogs, and the bootable-JFS handling has been updated to match the released eCS 2.0 version of JFS.

Also a tool has been added to change the default menu selection on the FreeDOS boot menu, inside a DFSee ISO imagefile.

Finally, a seperate ISO has been made available that is MUCH smaller than the regular one (2.5 versus 35 Mb) and tuned to work best with the bootable USB stick.

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning, filesystem and disk analysis, some file recovery and UNDELETE and smart imaging or cloning of partitions or complete disks.

FireFox-3.5.10 SeaMonkey-2.0.5 ThunderBird-3.0.5 uploaded to netlabs/pub/mozilla/{APPLICATION} (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Reorganization of the mozilla dir was necessary, since I’ve gotten problems with upload to the main directory. Since it was possible to upload in a subdirectory, I created for every application its own subdirectory.

All versions report themselves as beta. However, this is due to their official release is coupled to the official release of firefox-3.6.4, which will get a major overhaul (out of process plugins -  unfortunately not for OS/2, we’re working on it) and therefore is not yet ready for going public. Estimated release date is Jun 1st. Nevertheless, the source code for the uploaded versions did not change within the last two weeks, therefore I consider them to be final. OS/2 specific changes since the last version were made to a function in Thunderbird. Now, indexing works also with the 3.0.x branch. (To be honest I cannot finally judge whether or not this improvement is a consequence of the OS/2 code change, but it works and that’s the most important result :-))

All applications were built with gcc-3.3.5 (using the known parser related patches).

Have fun, Walter

Dr. Message Technology Preview 2 available (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

This version should be a vast improvement in both usability and stability over the previous Technology Preview release. Settings will now be stored in an INI file in the program directory, and fonts and colors should be customizable for all windows through the use of the Font and Mixed Color Palettes, and all window sizes and positions are saved and restored between sessions. Also, multiple accounts can now log in during the same session without the program becoming confused.

This is still early code, with many features left unimplemented, and may not work as expected. Use with care. PLEASE READ the included ReadMe.OS2 file before using for the first time. I’m looking for feedback about any protocol problems or mentions of bad memory access or memory leaks in my debug log.

Although I welcome suggestions about the direction I am taking with the GUI implementation, please realize that the current implementation is largely incomplete and still being heavily worked.

DFSee 10.3 released today (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

DFSee itself has several fixes and updates.

The SCRIPT and menu-item that automate making the bootable USB stick introduced with version 10.2 has been updated with more error detection and recovery. The minimum size of the stick is now 1Gb, with the main partition being almost 1Gb too, so there is lots of room for additional ISO files to be booted.

It also got a nice splash-screen for its ISO boot menu :-)

DFSee is a very powerful disk-utility with disk partitioning,
filesystem and disk analysis, some file recovery and UNDELETE
and smart imaging or cloning of partitions or complete disks.
