Odin 0.8.6 (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

There is a new version of ODIN on the Netlabs FTP server.
ODIN is the Open Source project to provide a win32 API for OS/2 and eComStation. Originally to allow OS/2 users to run Windows 32 bit applications. Now used to port windows applications to OS/2 an eComStation. The Odin runtime is a requirement for the newest developed versions of JAVA and Flash 10 for OS/2 and eCS.

For more information and downloads, see:

http://class='extlink'http://svn.netlabs.org/odin32

Download: http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/odin/0.8.6/odin-0.8.6.zip
Debug: http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/odin/0.8.6/odin-0.8.6-debug.zip

Requires the following:
- kLIBC runtime v0.6.5 (http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_5-csd5.wpi
- GCC runtime v4.4.6 (http://class='extlink'ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/gcc4core-1_2_1.wpi

0.8.6 (2012-10-23)
------------------
- kernel32: Fix crash when using the new SEH scheme (0.8.5 regression).
- kernel32: Disable Win32 TIB switch completely by default. This fixes spins
in an exception handler loop in some applications (e.g. LibreOffice trying
to load JVM.DLL).
- kernel32: Add support for custom PE/PEC/W16ODIN paths to ODIN.INI (fixes
broken PE/PEC functionality in RPM packages).
- kernel32: Add GetCPInfoEx and ConvertThreadToFiber (needed for GTK).
- kernel32: Add InitializeSListHead (needed for MSVCR100.DLL).
- kernel32: Fix inverted return values in GetFileInformationByHandle and
some other APIs (this could confuse Flash 10.1+).
- kernel32: Implement GetFileInformationByHandle for directories.
- kernel32: Add support for Windows XP SP3 version and make it the default.
- user32: Partly implement MsgWaitForMultipleObjectsEx (for Flash 11.4).
- shell32: Export SHGetSpecialFolderPathW (needed by Flash 11.4).
- crypt32: Disable debug fields of RTL_CRITICAL_SECTION_DEBUG (fixes
occasional crashes in CRYPT32.DLL e.g. during playback of some Flash).
- odininst: Register DLLs that require registration (fixes playback of some
Flash content for Flash versions starting from 10.1).
- pe: Don’t add .exe if an extension is already present in the program name
(this fixes programs like InstallShiled that use non-standard extensions).
- pe: Fix memory allocation error for some Win32 EXEs (this error could be
displayed if the size of the EXE was too small).

Workplace Sans 0.91 released (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Workplace Sans is a TrueType font designed to resemble WarpSans to
varying degrees (depending on configuration). It is recommended or
required by various software, including http://class='extlink'OpenOffice.org, QT4, and the
Mozilla family of applications. Version 0.91 is now available in
Hobbes incoming, and at http://class='extlink'http://www.altsan.org/creative/fonts/workplace/

In the year since the last public release, I have started studying font design more seriously. Many of the principles that I’ve learned
have been applied in this latest release. These include better optical
balance, use of ink traps, improved counter shapes, and an overhaul of
letter spacing according to recommended techniques. (All of these are
mainly visible at larger sizes.)

As usual, version 0.91 is released in two versions: a "plain" version
and a "bitmap-enhanced" version. The latter version is recommended for
people who prefer the appearance of the classic WarpSans bitmap font
(bitmaps are included for four point sizes in the 7-12 point range depending on screen DPI). The plain version will show antialiased text
at all sizes.

Semi-detailed list of changes since version 0.90:

17 October 2012 (Alex Taylor) Workplace Sans 0.91
- (Light) Added vertical overshoots.
- (Light) A few more characters now included in build.
- (Bold) Lightened horizontal stems a little.
- (Bold) Added various Baltic and other characters.
- Increased horizontal overshoots in Regular and Bold weights.
- Upped UPM to 1024 (from 1000).
- Smoothed and reshaped counters throughout.
- Many glyph tweaks & improvements.
- Reworked glyph spacing according to Walter Tracy’s method.

17 April 2012 (Alex Taylor) - not released
- (Normal) Tweaked the tail of the ’g’ slightly.
- Fractionally increased the width of the ’N’.
- Modified the ’w’ and ’W’ to bring the central vertex up to the full
character height. (This is a slight departure from WarpSans but having
them lower just looked ugly.)
- Changed the ’a’ (again). Now the cross-stroke is slightly higher and
flows smoothly into the stem. The glyph shape has been changed in other
subtle ways as well.

News on eCS 2.2 beta... (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Here is a news update from Mensys regarding eComStation. As I have written in the previous email about Warpstock Europe 2012. This will not happen. But we will have a Warpstock Europe 2013 next year in May in Haarlem again!
Mensys moved to a new office building last year. That move has taken up way more time then we had planned :-)

Things however have not been grinding to a hold. Our developers continue to work on improving drivers.
There is going to a new version of eCS 2.2 coming. But we first want todo a public beta and then a release candidate before we release this version as 2.2 final.
The modifications to the base OS are very big!

The biggest modification is that ACPI will be switched on by default when eCS 2.2 loads from CD. The ACPI drivers is crucial to make eCS run on
modern hardware. The test results over the last couple of months have been extremely good. Some people needed to use a lot of command line switches
to get ACPI work properly in the past. The ACPI driver now works on just about any computer without any user action required.
SMP support is activated automaticly if the system suppports it. We have the so called HLT instruction back in the SMP kernel so your CPU will remain
cool. This works on AMD and Intel systems. If your system is running on low CPU usage extra CPU cores are switched off and switched back on in a blink of an eye when needed!
A lot of drivers have also been updated for proper SMP an suspend/resume support. Like the IBMKBD.SYS, AMOUSE.SYS, DOSCALL1.DLL, TCPIP32.DLL and DANIS506.ADD.

While not *yet* released into the public for further testing a heavily updated Panorama driver is being tested right now that will make slow
video a thing of the past. A lot of modern systems the so called MTRR registers where being setup incorrectly. Resulting on some systems
is extremely slow video. We now have a Panorama driver that also supports PAT in case Panorama can not setup correctly the MTRR registers.
Also

Also an heavily updated USB will be included as we move away from the IBM USB based stack.
Basicly I’m expecting to see almost no USB keyboard or mouse fail on eCS anymore with this new USB drivers.
Also a lot of problems should go away with slow transfers to USB attached storage.

Also for the people that have a hang or trap when SCREEN01.SYS loads. This new eCS version will fix that!

Expected release by the latest second week of November. To access this beta you will need an active software subscription.

Regards,

Roderick Klein

New CUPSWIZ release (preview #5) (von http://news.warpevents.eu/)

Alex Taylor has released a new preview version of eCups printer creation wizard, version 0.95. This is a preview version of a graphical front-end for creating CUPS-based printers under OS/2.

http://class='extlink'http://www.altsan.org/os2/printing/

New this release:
- Hopefully fixed problem where the printer object just wouldn’t be
created on some systems. (RINSTPRN just mysteriously refused to
install the driver in some circumstances. I’ve tried to circumvent
this by installing the driver myself, and only relying on RINSTPRN
for the device/queue and WPS object creation.)
- You can now run CUPSWIZ on a system where CUPS isn’t installed
locally, as long as you have a CUPS server on the network. In
this case, CUPSWIZ doesn’t attempt to talk to CUPS at all, it simply asks you for a CUPS-based PPD for the printer you want
to create, plus the address of the server and the queue name.
This mode can be specified by passing /R on the command line;
the program will also enter this mode automatically (with a
warning) if a local CUPS server cannot be located.
- Some minor cosmetic adjustments.
