Neues von Netl@bs (von Adrian Gschwend)
Adrian Gschwend berichtet über Verändrungen am Netl@bs server in naher Zukunft. Wer sich für OS/2 Software interessiert, wird an diesem "Bericht" seine Freude haben ...
Original englische Nachricht:

Hi OS/2 and eCS Community,

It's quite a long time ago that I promised a complete relaunch of OS/2 Netlabs. The past months a lot of people asked me about the outdated webpages and about serveral projects, let me explain why it takes that long and what you can expect soon.
End of July 2002 I finished classes at the Computer Science Departement at Biel School of Engineering in Switzerland. As you can imagine it's quite a lot of work to finish the studies so I couldn't invest as much time into OS/2 Netlabs as I expected. I also had to earn some money in my spare time...
However, at my current job I wrote a new content management system (CMS) I will use as well for the new webpages at netlabs.org. This CMS is working on my local testwebserver and will be enhanced in the future.
I will have my diploma exams in early September and November/December I
will write my diploma work. That means after my exams I will go to Hamburg (Germany) to meet Arne Blankerts which hosts the netlabs.org webserver.
In Hamburg I will completely update the current webserver and enable the
new face of the webpages. After the relaunch we will have some exciting
new projects at OS/2 Netlabs, I'm quite sure you will like it!
The update will be ready for Warpstock USA, Arne Blankerts will introduce it live at our OS/2 Netlabs booth and answer your questions. Because of the new CMS everyone can be an active contributor to OS/2 Netlabs, even as a normal user. We will provide a short introduction to our CMS at Warpstock (USA and Europe) and we hope that several users will get so called Project Administrators. This will help us to keep OS/2 Netlabs up to date in the Internet.
There will also be a lot of news for developers out there, we have plenty of ideas which will be discussed as soon as possible. Also we plan to relaunch edm2.com, the domain is now hosted at netlabs.org (and belongs to us as well, thanks a lot to the previous EDM/2 crew!).
If you want to meet us you should definitely visit Warpstock USA and/or
Europe. A lot of our developers will be there and we also have several
presentations about OS/2 Netlabs related projects. It's always a great
plesure to meet the people out there in real live! I can't make it to
Warpstock USA unfortunately but I will be at Warpstock Europe.

That's it so far, expect some news soon!
Enjoy the summer!
Adrian Gschwend & the whole OS/2 Netlabs crew

If you have a something that goes wrong with boot CD you can report your experience via the BugTracker on www.ecomstation.com.
You can will find the bugtracker option when you log in on www.ecomstation.com. Please remeber to tell on which SCSI card and/or with which IDE chipset it went wrong. Which driver(s) you loaded ? Not just that it failed or worked on an X amount of machines, we need more information. We of course also like to hear from you when the boot was successful. Please also test the utilities MINIlvm and PMFORMAT which can be found in the directory \ecs\install on the CD.
If you get a trapscreen (black screen with text) when booting of the CD, please look on the screen for the field CSLIM=. If the value is FFFFFFFF its not useful. However if the value behind CSLIM=0000xxxx (where xxxx is an hex decimal number), please also report this. In some cases we can trace then in which device driver it went wrong.
When booting of CD its true you will NOT come further then a pmshell WITHOUT desktop and with a command prompt. This is normal with this test cd.
We have also seen people ask the question how you must burn the track to CD. You need burn it as an ISO image. This means that you must not burn it as a bootable CD. RSJ has the option to burn an ISO track or give the CD burner a drive letter. You must not give the CD burner a drive letter and then burn the ISO image to CD. Drag and drop the ISO image in the CD record view and then burn the ISO image to CD.
And please read the documentation that you can find on the same page as when downloading.

Warpstock Austin braucht Freiwillige (von Luc Van Bogaert)
Original englische Nachricht:
Are you coming to Warpstock 2002 in Austin Texas, October 5-6?
Warpstock 2002 is less then 3 months away now. The presentation schedule is filling up nicely and the excitement is building. If you are planning on coming , would you like to help out at the event? Volunteers who contribute at least two hours of their time during the weekend receive a free Warpstock shirt and the eternal gratitude of those who attend the event. Without the volunteers, the show would not be a success.
We need volunteers to help man the registration table, the Warpstock booth, act as room monitors, help with the network setup, help with the exhibition hall setup and breakdown. You don't have to be local to the Austin area to help in these areas. One thing we could use help with this year from those familiar with Austin, are suggestions for the Social event. Do you know of a facility near the Arboretum area, that can provide an interesting evening for about 100 people? If so please let us know at warpstock-team@warpstock.org. Make sure you let us know if you are interested in volunteering and what position you may be interested in helping with. (When you notify us in advance of your plan to help we can make sure we order the correct size and number of shirts, and we can better coordinate the event.)
For more on Warpstock 2002 please see our web page at <http://www.warpstock.org> where you can find more information about hotel reservations and a preliminary list of scheduled sessions.
Warpstock, Inc., is a North Carolina corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: <http://www.warpstock.org>

Warpstock 2002 (EU) Ankündigung (von Gerrit Schoenmaker)
Hier kommt die lang ersehnte offizielle Ankündigung der Warpstock 2002 in Holland. Sie findet in Arnhem, Holland vom 08.-10. November statt. Original englische Nachricht:
When and where:

The annual OS/2 (eCS) event in Europe will be held this time in the historical city of Arnhem in the Netherlands from November 8th - 10th, 2002 at the Youth Hostel "Alteveer". Members of Dutch, German and Belgian OS/2 usergroups are working together in organizing this event, giving the European thought an extra impulse that way.

The location:

Alteveer Hostel is a modern accomodation situated in the on the woody northern site of Arnhem, which is located at the banks of the river Rhine. It's close to the bustling city centre and with lots of recreational facilities in the area. The famous Open Air Museum and Burgers Zoo are within walking distance. A bit further you will find the Hoge Veluwe National Park with the Kroeller Mueller Museum and its outstanding collection of art and paintings.

Accessibility:

Inspecting a globe you will find Arnhem about a 100 km east of Amsterdam, some 10 km away from the border with Germany. It's about one hour from Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) either by car or train. Arnhem is as far as 400km from Hamburg, 165 km from Koeln, 640 km from Basel, 215 km from Bruxelles and 510 km from Paris.
The Hostel Alteveer is easily reachable from the A12 highway at exit 26 toward Arnhem-North, no matter if you are coming from Amsterdam or Germany.More information you will find on the website.

The accomodation:

The hostel itself (http://www.njhc.nl/english/hb_entree.cfm?id=6) has a very domesticated atmosphere, modern meeting rooms, a cheerful English pub, snooker billiard and a nice main lobby with a variety of chairs. There is already a bed and breakfast for the rate of about $20 per night for a quadruple room. So the hostel has the ultimate ingredients to exchange knowledge among OS/2 enthousiasts, even during the night! If you are curious about pictures of the hostel take a look at http://warpstock.os2.org.

If you prefer a real hotel over a youth hostel, of course there is the possibility to make a choice from a wide range of all kind of Hotels in the city of Arnhem. There is a very nice website to choose hotels from (http://www.bookings.nl/cgi-bin/searchpage.pl?lang=uk&id=100001&style=B). More information about registration and all the things you need to enjoy Warpstock Europe 2002 are published very soon on the Warpstock website.

What could one expect?

If you are dealing with OS/2 or eCS, no matter in what way, one of the most frequently asked questions is: How to get things working on OS/2............!

So much attention on this Warpstock Europe will be paid to that, e.g. USB devices, digital camera's, etc.

Dutch, German and Belgian OS/2 usergroups are presenting themselves, showing you all the practical things you allways wanted to know.

Furthermore vendors will be present with special offers of OS/2 software (Mensys BV: www.mensys.nl) and full OS/2 supported IBM hardware (Bluelink BV: www.bluelink.nl). The offers you will discover there are really irresistable!

Some presentation sessions by well known people inside the OS/2 world are already confirmed.

We mention here:
  • Mensys people : A look at the complete rewritten installation procedure of eCS
  • Alain Reykaert: CID install
  • Marcus de Geus: REXX-mail
  • Bart van Leeuwen: The brand new email client "Lookout/2 "
  • Peter Kolle: All about the excellent DTP program Maul
  • Achim Hasenmueller: Innotek software
  • Marcus Montkovski: USB support OS/2
  • Zsolt Kadar: That amazing UpdateCD
  • Oliver Stein: Get connected by IR

This is only the beginning and there are much more presentations to come.

If you are interested in giving a presentation feel free to contact Christian Langanke (C.Langanke@TeamOS2.de)

Gerrit Schoenmaker (g.s.schoenmaker@kader.hobby.nl) or John Bijnens (john.bijnens@planetinternet.be).

All speakers at Warpstock get a free bed & breakfast in Alteveer Hostel for one night! So go ahead and get in touch.

More information will be available very soon at the Warpstock Europe website warpstock.os2.org.

Warpstock (US) Hotel reservations (von Mark Dodel)
Eine Erinnerung daran, daß man sich doch besser ein Hotelzimmer besorgen sollte, wenn man vorhat, zur Warpstock in Austin, Texas zu fahren. Oriinal englische Nachricht:
Warpstock Hotel reserJust a reminder that the hotel block reserved for Warpstock 2002 attendees is only assured until September 13, 2002. Rooms after that date are as available and not at the guaranteed Warpstock rate of $129 single/double. For a comparison their regular rack rate for the Austin Renaissance Hotel is $217 for a single/$237 for a double room. I know most people don't pay rack rate but the hotel has told us they expect to be sold out that weekend, so its not a good idea to wait until the last minute this year to make your arrangements for attending the event.
