Quatech's ESC-100D leverages the PCI 2.1 specification to provide multiple serial ports while using minimal system resources. The ESC-100D requires only one PCI slot to provide eight independent RS-232 ports. All eight channels are addressed in a continuous 64-byte I/O block for simplified software access. All channels share a single PCI interrupt, and an interrupt status register is available for determining the interrupt source. As the ESC-100D completely conforms to the PCI specification, Plug & Play capability is assured.
The ESC-100D uses Quatech's new Enhanced Serial Adapter design. This new design extends the 115.2 kbps maximum data rate for legacy serial devices to 921.6 kbps, for top-of-the-line enhanced boards. The ESC-100D comes standard with eight 16550 UARTs containing 16-byte FIFOs. These FIFOs reduce processing overhead and allow higher data rates to be achieved, up to 230.4 kbps with the standard configuration. State-of-the-art 16750 UARTs with 64-byte FIFOs are available as an option (ESC-100D-750) and will increase the board's speed to the maximum 921.6 kbps. This upgrade greatly reduces CPU overhead and is an ideal choice for heavy multi-tasking environments. For optimal performance in industrial settings, surge suppression and ESD-resistant driver/receivers are available as an option for the standard board.
The ESC-100D connects to serial peripherals via the provided cable which terminates in eight standard D-25 serial port connectors. A breakout box which includes a D-78 to D-78 connector cable and provides one D-25 and seven D-9 connectors, is available as an option.
All necessary software is included to install the board under OS/2.
