Leading provider of credit reporting
When financial
institutions lend money, the risks can be very high, particularly
for high-value transactions, such as mortgages. To help minimize
that risk, they turn to credit reporting companies to check the
credit rating of the individuals who are borrowing money.
First
American CREDCO is one of the USA's
leading providers of credit reporting and information management
products. CREDCO was founded in 1960,
and was acquired in 1995 by First American Financial Corporation, a
Southern California-based provider of real estate-related financial
services, and renamed First American CREDCO.
The company's key products range from residential mortgage
credit reports for financial institutions, to confidential credit
reports designed for consumers which include credit information from
the nation's credit repositories in one, easy-to-read document.
With an ongoing need to ensure fast and
efficient turnaround of this information as credit requests come in,
First American CREDCO sought a proven
and reliable solution to link its internal computers, and provide
connectivity with customers. The solution selected was IBM MQSeries
messaging middleware.
- Common EDI interface
- Until the beginning of 1997, First American
CREDCO had historically relied
primarily on proprietary software to conduct its business. Scott
Loyet, director of the company's business systems development group,
explained: "In the past we wrote software on our own, but we
wanted to utilize off-the-shelf tools to provide industrial-strength
solutions to our business problems. We wanted rapid deployment of a
solution that would provide us with the capability to receive
requests for credit reports from customers and send them back, often
in real-time."
- First American CREDCO
was one of the first financial institutions to support the X12
standard for credit EDI (Electronic Data Interchange). It elected to
deploy MQSeries across the enterprise to facilitate a common EDI
interface for the corporation.
- Jim Billmeyer, IBM consulting services and
technical expert on the project, said: "First American CREDCO
runs most of its transactions on the IBM RISC System/6000 platform
under AIX. In this EDI-based environment, we wanted to establish
connectivity between internal AIX-based platforms, as well with
other platforms, including OS/2, at customer sites."

The team started implementation of the system in
January 1997, and was beta testing with a number of customers prior
to the final testing of the product in November of the same year.
"One of our beta customers is using MQSeries on an OS/2
platform and passing transactions from their source system to our
AIX system. That has worked very successfully. As a result, we'll be
rolling out the system to future EDI-based customers."

Business advantage
Loyet is convinced that MQSeries provides First
American CREDCO with a distinct business
advantage. "Customers have a choice as to which company they go
to for credit information - MQSeries gives us a competitive edge
because we can provide them with a totally reliable and proven
mechanism for obtaining credit data. Customers can also choose to
communicate with us via MQSeries, whether they are on OS/2, Windows
NT, or whatever. MQSeries enables us react quickly within a highly
stable IS environment."
