Information source: OS/2 Warp Vision - June, 1997 Original under: http://www.software.ibm.com/os/warp/library/vision/save.html page index: (red) CIBC (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) (1) (green) Zurich Insurance Group (2) (blue) Bank of Montreal (3), (4), (5), (6), (7) [...] MANAGED PCs It is now estimated, according to the Gartner Group, that upgrading and maintaining each PC on a standard network costs from $10,000 to $20,000 per year. IBM recently previewed a new software technology, WorkSpace On-DemandTM, which demonstrates our direction in reducing the cost of PC ownership, as well as addressing the range of emerging Intel-based hardware environments, including "managed PC's" and "thin clients." This technology has already helped businesses like Zurich Insurance Group, Bank of Montreal, and CIBC to transition from a traditional client/server computing model to a network computing environment optimized for 100% Pure JavaTM, the Internet, and corporate intranets. [...] A STEP AHEAD WITH AN OS/2 WARP SOLUTION Cost of ownership is a growing concern for any business with an investment in personal computers. With the industry moving toward network computing, new buzz words such as "zero-based administration," "thin clients," or "no-cost computing" abound. And terms like "centralized management" are back in style. Managing systems centrally never went out of style at the Bank of Montreal. Their bank branch IT solution embodies network computing capabilities already present in OS/2 Warp. The workstation hard drives contain no user data, no applications, not even the operating system--only a few files necessary to maintain good performance. Gartner Group "cost of ownership" studies indicate situations where users maintain applications and control the data on their workstations can require one support person for every 40 to 50 users. In the branch environments, Bank of Montreal is seeing a 250 to 1 user/support ratio. Bank of Montreal has chosen an OS/2 Warp solution for its mission critical applications. IBM's latest network computing technology, WorkSpace On-Demand, could be the next step for the bank as it continues to look at ways to reduce costs. "MANAGING CODE AND DATA CONSUMES A MAJOR PORTION OF PC SUPPORT RESOURCES.IT ORGANIZATIONS CAN CONSIDERABLY LOWER COSTS BY REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF DATA AT ITS END POINTS."
