They also realized the importance of driving down internal costs by steering more customer transactions to the Web -- according to Booz, Allen & Hamilton, an average bank teller transaction costs $1.08 versus 13½ on-line. Java and an OS/2 Warp computing environment enabled CERA and IBM's Network Computing Projects unit to create a Java-based Mortgage Loan Calculator available to potential borrowers for use from CERA's website. This type of central control and wide-accessibility means not only reducing loan application processing time but eliminating the support costs of software up-date distribution and, more generally, rolling out new services quickly in reaction to changing market conditions.
